Not sure if this has been posted, but it is confirmed in this article from tennisaustralia website.

After missing the majority of the 2005 season with knee and ankle injuries, 1999 Moorilla Hobart International champion, Chanda Rubin from the USA will be back to try and re-establish herself as one of the world’s best players. With a career-high singles ranking of No.6, Rubin has dropped down to 544 on the world rankings, but will use a special injury protected ranking of 29 to be the second seed for the tournament.

Did she play any tournaments this year? I know she commited and withdrew from alot.

I guess protected ranking is always there to help top players having injured to get into Main Draws, what I doubt is whether the protected seeding still exists.

I'm sure she played Cinci, she got a wildcard I think. I looked up her activity on WTA site and she also played FO qualifying (losing first round to Mattek :o) and losing first round at Strasbourg to Zheng. Hopefully she'll come back strong this year, for one (or more :)) last solid year on tour.

I am very happy to hear that she's committed but there still a month for her to get injured again

Whoa, protected seeding is BACK!

This also means that Capriati will be seeded at the start of her comeback. I believe her protected rank is 11 or something like that.

Unless the article is wrong.

And Chanda is back! :)

I think protected ranking have never been stopped. Kim was out for 6 month attempted a comeback and then was out for another 6 months. You have to be out for 12 months or more to get a protected ranking and I hope chanda does well in her comeback efforts.

I think the article is mistaken re:seeding. Protected seedings were done away with. She can still use a protected ranking to enter tournaments for a while, then she'll be able to use wild cards (at least 6 MD, as a veteran player).

She hasn't played since summer. Not sure how much is injury, and how much is dealing with the aftermath of Katrina (Lafayette took in thousands of displaced folks from New Orleans) and deciding to recuperate for the rest of the year.

Here's hoping she is and stays healthy for a while, and gets back on track. I've got a few "Geaux"s in storage from this season.

I'm sure she played Cinci, she got a wildcard I think.

She did play in Cincinnati but defaulted with yet another injury. I was at the qualies and saw her up in the stands watching with her coach. She looked great and I asked her how she was doing and she said she felt good. I don't believe she's played since then. Poor Chanda. I don't think she has the goods to make a Kim or Justine-like comeback but maybe she can stay healthy enough to win a couple of tournaments and feel good about things.
