Fed Cup captain John Alexander says he is confident players and fans will embrace Jelena Dokic's return to Australian tennis.

Alexander said Dokic needed as much support as possible to try to regain her form after emerging from the darkest period of her life.

Dokic, the former World No.4 whose ranking has plunged to 349, is due back from Croatia this weekend and hopes to play in next month's Australian Open.

She will prepare by practising at Melbourne Park and will play tournaments in Auckland and Canberra.

Alexander said the 22-year-old deserved support for her independent decision to move back to the country which nourished her career.

And while she may be ineligible to represent Australia in Fed Cup for two years after having played for Serbia and Montenegro, Alexander said Dokic could rebuild her form in a stable atmosphere.

"I think she will progress very well, I think it's a very good decision for her personally," Alexander said.

"I think her life has been filled with turmoil and difficulty for a person so young.

"She has a lot of friends and those who are willing to help her, both inside Tennis Australia and outside.

"And I think once she is settled personally and is given a fair chance to be able to direct her efforts to doing what she loves to do and that's to play tennis and compete, she will improve amazingly," he said.

"I think she was only about 18 or 19 when she achieved the ranking of No.4 in the world.

"Being fully grown now there's no reason why she can't improve on the level that she was playing at."

While the competition in women's tennis might have increased since Dokic's time in the top 10, Alexander said her best might still be ahead of her, even if she could not regain her previous ranking.

"The women's game is at an all-time high and whether she can achieve that No.4 ranking again is something else, but she will be a very interesting competitor if she can regain her full form," he said.

"The obvious thing to me which seems to have escaped everyone is so simple - she was taken away from Australia by her family.

"It was not her choice, but it is her choice to come back and I think that's great."

Alexander said there was a strong bond within the Australian Fed Cup team and he was confident Dokic would be accepted back when she became eligible to play again.

"I think Jelena would really benefit from that and I think others would really benefit from her company, they would enjoy the prospect of practising and training with her.

"I think it's very important for our team members to support each other and watch each other's matches - and extent that camaraderie beyond the week of Fed Cup."

Alexander said Dokic would be able in the future to take advantage of the coaching made available to Fed Cup team members by Tennis Australia.

"She's going to train with other Australian players over the next month or so - she can do simple things too like just go to the beach and have a barbeque and she can re-establish friendships.

"Tennis is very much a holistic type of sport, if you're upset you're not going to play very well because you're not going to have that emotional resource and fibre when the going gets tough," he said.

John Alexander sounds like just the type of person Jelena needs to be around. :worship: I never doubted that everyone in Tennis Australia would be very supportive of Jelena, but it remains to be seen how the public will treat her.
