View Full Version : Why Hingis's Return is GREAT for the tour

I've been reading all the threads about Martina's return to the tour next year, and it amazes me how many people are skeptical! This is a great thing for the tour - and yes - a Williams fan is saying this!!! Hear (or read in this case) me out:

-Martina Hingis will bring something to the tour that we don't see hardly at all nowadays: versatility. Hingis can play from the baseline. She's got pretty technically sound strokes, and she can mix up the spin and placement of her shots. Not only does she have good strokes, but she's got a great transition game. She can come to net and be just as effective from there. Not only can she play the net - she can serve and volley, which is definitely something we don't see in today's game.

-Hingis has a much different mentality than the other players. She's a great tactician. Today's players want to "hit the ball as hard as I can, and if it comes back, I'll hit it harder." Hingis doesn't think that way. She finds a weakness in her opponents and attacks it until she either wins or they make her do something different. Notice that even when Serena, Venus, Jennifer and Lindsay were dominating, it wasn't like they ran over Hingis every single time. Sure, they had their convincing wins over her, but usually the matches were pretty close. That's because Hingis knows how to offset her opponents' power with her tactics.

-Martina is a terrific competitor. Serena and Justine are today's best fighters, but I think that Hingis will join that group if she keeps her comeback up long enough. Using the other two things I talked about, she can dig herself out of a hole. Having a good gameplan and a versatile shot selection gives her many different options to turn to when her back's against the wall.

People, this is a great thing for the game. Martina will add a spice that the game's been lacking. She's not afraid to say how she feels, as we all know. She doesn't back down to anybody, no matter how big and strong they are. The tour couldn't have asked for anything better! Remember all those great rivalry matches she had with Lindsay, Jennifer and the Williams sisters!?? Now they can just pick up where they let off! Seriously, Martina's comeback is just the boost the tour needed.

lol i've noticed how old school williams fans and hingis fans and davenport fans really are starting to bond together!!!!:smooch:

we just love the rivalry and the sheer determination between them whenever they had a showdown.

you could tell in their eyes that its not so much they needed to win against the other...its more like they refuse to LOSE to them.

Nice post Serenafan....yes, the variety in Martina's game was sadly missed..everybody plays one dimensional tennis these days...but what I look forward to is the rivalry between the sisters and Marti, we haven't experienced that since Marti left the scene in 2002...it was compelling, exciting and riveting so hopefully it will continue to even "greater" heights!:worship: :hearts:

The WTA needs someone like Marti. She's someone who can/will be the face of the tour, who won't be afraid to say anything. Being a bitch sells in women's tennis. If she can bring that 90's attitude back, she's going to be the player the general public will love to hate. She's going to bring attention and drama back to the tour.

i have a feeling thought it will be a little seles like for hingis' come back. while she had alot of ppl who didnt like her pre retirement...i think the public are going to be so pleased that she's back that she's going to gain alot of supporters.. u know how when seles was dominating not many ppl cheered for her, but after she came back from the stabbing she was a sentimental favorite. granted seles had much more of an emotional come back.

I can't wait for Martina to return. I hated her then, but my views have definitely changed. She was great for the game, and still is great for the game.

Can't wait... :D

You are only partly right!

Martina will add some more spice to the
tour and bring some headlines.

That's all that can be
definite right now.

Yes, Martina will speak her mind, however I've
seen her mellow somewhat in the past few years
where she can say what she feels w/o blatantly
insulting someone.

I think your expecting for her to cause drama.
I think you're sadly mistaken. I think she has
matured greatly and would only start bs if
started with.

Also, I do believe some of the bs that is nothing
is made into something because certain fans want
to hear and see what they want.

As for her game and rivalries,
don't get ahead of yourself.

The game is more difficult than when she left.
The younger girls and lower ranked players have
gotten fitter and more powerful. Many of her older
foes have had the power but have also gained knowledge
of the game having learned more of how to construct a
point, use spins, angles and such.

Martina pretty much needs to emulate Justine if
she wants to get back into it with the top girls.
Imp[roving her serve, getting stronger, and fitter.

This february she tried, won a set, but lost and then
dropped out of sight again.

Martina can do what she wants but she'll
have to work and work hard to get back.
It's not gonna be this cakewalk you seem
to think it is and she'll simply pick-up where
she left off. Which was competing but not
winning nearly as easy as she had in the past.

I wish her all the luck in the world and
it'll be interesting to see just how interested
she is in getting what she needs to be back
to where she wants to be.

I remeber her saying last year she didn't
want to comeback because she saw
what was happening with Venus.

Yet, in about a year's time or less her
she is once more.

So maybe Venus gave her some motivation
as well coming back from injury and form
trouble to win yet again.

I just keep thinking back to the Oz 02 Final when hingis lost - but she was playing very aggressively and dominating capriati for basically the first 2 sets ... If she comes back playing that aggressive style attacking net etc It will be very interesting

I agree that its great. Martina's court smarts will win her some matches for sure. She knows how to expose an opponent's weakness, which is something many players today don't worry with; they're happy to rely on their own strengths to win matches. I think Hingis can be pretty successful on clay, esp. since players like Sharapova, Davenport, etc. aren't nearly as tough there.

The best part of Hingis' return is that we'll get to hear Sandra De Jenken say....

"Game, INGis"!!!!

Can't wait! :)
