During the RG final, Dementieva loses her temper after Pierce waits 20 seconds to serve, and then decides to replace her racquet. "Just hurry up, bitch" she yells audibly and the umpire issues a warning. Dementieva and the umpire get into a heated discussion about the time Pierce takes between points, and Elena then receives a second warning after calling the umpire "a biased idiot". With Elena in tears, the tournament director appears to try to salvage what's left of the final. Elena calms down a bit and they play on.

In the third set, Elena is down 0-5 and shocks the French audience by hitting an underhanded serve that results in her only ace of the match. Pierce stays focused and wins the game and match with Elena leaving the court sobbing.

A few weeks later Elena loses in the first round of Wimbledon and announces her retirement from the sport. :(
