I would imagine not. She retired and there is some debate, no matter where you stand, if she was injured or not. I think she starts at the bottom of the barrel.

that wouldn't be fair for the other players

Is it not true that a player who has won a GS (and BTW was ranked #1) could get a WC wherever they want? And as many WC as they want. Not to mention that Hingis would draw A LOT of people!

She will certainly get WC. It's just a question of whether they will give her a special seeding for being out 3 years with injury.

i hope not. i'd like her to start from the bottom and work her way to the top. that way, she can show everyone that she's still got what it takes to win. :)

I thought they voted against that particular special seeding. But I guess, in the end it is up to the tournaments themselves, not the tour.

I hardly think it would be fair to say ... a Dinara Safina.. or even a Patty Schnyder, who have worked very hard to get where they are and be bumped down because Martina Hingis thinks that she wants to play tennis again. :-\

Hingis will get all the MD WC's she wants, but no special seedings. Those are pretty much done away with for everyone.

no special ranking but unlimited wildcards

Maindraw entry would be enough.. too bad they've done away with the bonus points.. could speed up her climb up the rankings...

If you say so. I don't think she's going to beat many top 10 players BUT I think she'll be very consistent in the tournis she plays like she usually is.
She will climb up the rankings. that is if she's dedicated herself fully to tennis like Patty Schynder and Mary Pierce have in the last two years.

There are no more special seedings. But remember, there are sponsor's exemptions. Pretty much any tournament that wants can give her a wildcard anytome they want. They could give Chris Evert a main draw wild card if they wanted.

They got rid of those for reasons unknown. They didn't work with Venus or Serena and they just went from the rules. Its going to produce some very strange early rounds because we could have Martina, Jen and later hopefully Alicia all unseeded. That could seriously unmake your day.

Reasons unknown? It happened because Lindsay kept on making a big deal about it when she used it herself. She didn't like being pushed down a spot or two at every slam when Venus and Serena got a special seeding. It became one of Lindsay's focuses when it came to the slams, to get a higher seed so she wouldn't be pushed down for any reason. She'll likely be the top seed at 4 of the last 5 slams.
Still she was a bit of a hypocritical bitch. She'd rather play a top player early on in a tourni than later.

I think that's very fair. If she's still good enough she'll be up soon on her own anyway.

Comeback Trail

Hingis won't have to play qualifying matches at events such as Sydney, Australia or Indian Wells next year. Though she has been off the tour so long she doesn't qualify for a protected ranking, Hingis has applied for gold emeritus status, a tour representative said Tuesday.

That allows her, among other things, unlimited wild cards into tournaments. Hingis qualifies for the status because she has won five Grand Slam singles titles. One qualifying criteria for the program is three Grand Slam singles titles.

Hingis, who Tuesday announced her plans to return to the tour next year, could surface in Australia.

Australia-based Lisa Chaffey of Octagon, Hingis' management company, told the Sydney Morning Herald: "January is definitely in the mix, she definitely feels she is ready to come back now and be competitive, but we are not certain at this stage. It could be January but it also could be February or March."

Clijsters didn't get a wildcard so I don't think Martina can get one. I want to see a Martina Serena first round at Aus O. :)

She starts with no ranking and it not ranked until she has played three tournments if the rules haven't changed and she can have 6 or 8 wild cards. In her case it should be unlimited.

Kim didn't get a special ranking but she was able to take wild cards into tournments.

I thought as a former world #1 she could have unlimited wild cards?

Martina can get any wildcard she wants. That's not the question of the thread.

Clijsters got a wildcard into Warsaw...she didn't need any other wildcards because she jumped back up the rankings so quickly...

Sorry I mistyped this post. I wanted to say that Clijsters didn't get a special seeding.

no one gets Special Seedings anymore which is the best thing the WTA did
before it was one rule for one and another for 99% of the rest, now its same for all.

Hingis will get unlimited WC's as mentioned above, she's gonna be GOLD EMERITUS status.

I don't know. Let's ask Monica Seles. Or better yet, let's make the girl get on a scale in front of the news media, like a boxer, and see what shape she is in first, and then go from there.

That sort of first match might send Martina back into retirement. I hope she has an easier return.
