if today's announcement isn't a hoax, it would be natural to assume that Hingis is planning on playing Oz - anybody know any details?

Hm, I would have liked Hingis to train really hard for a longer period of time, but I still want to see her play, even if she loses early but Hingis and the Oz....omg omg omg...if this is a dream, please dont ever wake me up!!!!

one article said she was coming back in Pattaya although the poster did not say what the source of the article was

another article claims that she will be in Sydney / AO

most articles say she has not yet set a timetable so

If I were here, I'd wait until the clay season....softer on her knees and feet.

if she's not coming back until a later time, what was the point of making an announcement now?

It's not a hoax. In addition to being on the front page of Yahoo! News and CNN, the WTA is making an announcement about her return on their homepage.

I assume she'll play in Australia. Why wait for Pattaya?

exactly, if it's a real comeback then Pattaya is irrelevant, she ought to cut right to the chase. But just because Yahoo and CNN are on board doesn't prove this is legit.

A full article on the WTA homepage is what sold me.

"She is targeting a return in early 2006." I'm going to assume this means a tournament in Australia, or maybe Pattaya. Anything beyond that I wouldn't consider "early" 2006.

I think the WTA site is legit enough!

I wouldn't start with Sydney/AO. Start slow, get some wins, RG is soon enough for slams.

This wasn't a spur of the moment decision, IMO Martina will of being training hard for a while now. I hope she plays some lower tier tourneys to build some confidence and momentum.

Hingis should definitely return during the Aussie season, considering it's her best time of year, along with the carpet season.

I'm sure Martina didn't just decide to comeback, it was probably brewing in her (brilliant) mind from the time she dominated the WTT season or even way back when she lost to Marlene due to lack of fitness... think the Australian circuit would be a good place to start since it's her favourite surface and stuff... would be a good start if she could reach the R16 in Melbourne... All the tournaments are bound to give her a wildcard..

yes clearly Hingis has been planning this all year. Even from recent photos you can see she's bulked up closer to her playing weight. She's a smart girl who loves winning so i presume she'll be back when she's knows she's ready. Imagine the press for the Australian Open if both her and Dokic came back and everyone is playing.

If she does (which i'm doubting at the moment), i'll definately go see her in Sydney, and i will try and get to Melbourne somehow as well :D

it might be big advance press but i can't imagine either one of them getting out of the second round. Then it would be back to the real show of the serious contenders.

I would love to see her play Australia. Just seeing her on tv again competing would be amazing. However, she should take it slow and wait till RG.

Hingis would be offered Open wildcard, says McNamee

Former world number one Martina Hingis will be offered a wildcard for next year's Australia Open if she wants one, tournament chief executive Paul McNamee said on Wednesday.

Hingis offered Melbourne wildcard

Three-time Australian Open champion Martina Hingis will be offered a wildcard for next year's tournament - if she decides she wants to compete.

Hingis, who retired due to injury in 2002, announced on Tuesday she planned to return to professional tennis.

Tournament boss Paul McNamee said: "She'll be very popular and very welcome, but she has not finalised her plans as to when she's returning.

"We're hoping it's in Australia, but it's not a fait accompli."

McNamee said he had already made informal contact with the 25-year-old Swiss star's representatives.

"It's great for the sport that she's coming back," he said. "We just don't know whether it will be in Australia."

The 25-year-old Hingis, who won five Grand Slam titles during her career, made an earlier unsuccessful attempt to return to the circuit last February.

But on Tuesday she said: "I was never happy my injuries cut my career short and ultimately forced my decision to step away from tennis.

"I miss the game and the challenge of competing at the highest level of tennis, and I want to gauge whether I can stay healthy and compete against today's top players."
