Where Are They Now?
They go through them fast in this business.

Recently we chanced to come across the WTA ranking list for the end of 1998. It was rather astonishing to look at this list. Just over three years old, but the changes!

Let's go down the list, seeing what has become of the players in the Top Fifty three years ago.

1. Lindsay Davenport. Still in the Top Ten -- though she's going to miss most of this year.
2. Martina Hingis. Still in the Top Ten.
3. Jana Novotna. Retired.
4. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Still active, but not presently a Top Ten player.
5. Venus Williams. Still in the Top Ten.
6. Monica Seles. Still in the Top Ten.
7. Mary Pierce. Still active, but not presently a Top Ten player.
8. Conchita Martinez. Still active, but not presently a Top Ten player.
9. Steffi Graf. Retired.
10. Nathalie Tauziat. Retired (sort of).
11. Patty Schnyder. Still active, but back in the Top Twenty only after a long struggle.
12. Dominique Van Roost. Retired.
13. Anna Kournikova. Still active, but not presently a Top Twenty player.
14. Sandrine Testud. Still in the Top Twenty.
15. Irina Spirlea. Retired.
16. Natasha Zvereva. Semi-retired. (She's played some doubles, but no singles that we know of. And that came after about a year and a half of injuries.)
17. Amanda Coetzer. Still in the Top Twenty, but will not be next week.
18. Ai Sugiyama. Still active, but not presently a Top Twenty player.
19. Silvia Farina. Married, and still in the Top Twenty.
20. Serena Williams. Now in the Top Ten.
21. Anke Huber. Retired.
22. Julie Halard-Decugis. Retired.
23. Barbara Schett. Still in the Top Thirty.
24. Magui Serna. Still active, but out of the Top Thirty though she is once again rising.
25. Iva Majoli. Still active, but back in the Top Thirty only after a long struggle.
26. Elena Likhovtseva. Still active, but not presently a Top Thirty player.
27. Lisa Raymond. Still in the Top Thirty.
28. Henrieta Nagyova. Still active, but not presently a Top Thirty player.
29. Amelie Mauresmo. Now in the Top Ten.
30. Joannette Kruger. Still active, but not presently a Top Thirty player.
31. Corina Morariu. In remission from leukemia; currently unranked though she hopes to play again.
32. Virgina Ruano Pascual. Still active, but not presently a Top Forty player.
33. Tara Snyder. Still active, but not presently a Top Forty player.
34. Chanda Rubin. Still active, but not presently a Top Forty player.
35. Mariaan De Swardt. Retired; injured for a long time before giving up.
36. Sarah Pitkowski. Married and retired.
37. Tamarine Tanasugarn. Now in the Top Thirty.
38. Ruxandra Dragomir. Married, and no longer a Top 100 player.
39. Alexandra Fusai. No longer a Top 100 player.
40. Fang Li. No longer a Top 100 player.
41. Sylvia Plischke. No longer a Top 100 player.
42. Amy Frazier. Struggling to remain in the Top Fifty.
43. Maria Alejandra Vento. Married, and no longer a Top 100 player.
44. Cara Black. Struggling to get back into the Top Fifty.
45. Barbara Paulus. Effectively retired, though she has attempted a comeback.
46. Annie Miller. Retired.
47. Elena Tatarkova. No longer a Top 100 player.
48. Nathalie Dechy. Still in the Top Fifty, and rising.
49. Sabine Appelmans. Retired.
50. Anna Smashnova. A recent surge has put her in the Top Forty.

To sum up this list, of the fifty top players at the end of 1998:
* Retired: 10
* Effectively retired by injury: 4
* Still close to or above their 1998 rankings: 17
* Still active but has slipped significantly in the rankings: 17.

So after a mere three years, we've seen nearly a third of our players forced out of the game, and more than a third slide in the rankings. Only 17 -- just a third! -- are still close to or above their 1998 rankings.

It's been a long three years.
