View Full Version : Good News on French Open Coverage in Australia

TS

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I read in the Herald Sun today that Channel 7 is screening the French Open this year! As you all know Channel 9 has had the rights for several years but only ever show it from the semi finals onwards. According to this article Channel 7 will show the whole two weeks (but Im not sure of the times). A good move IMO! I've always been pissed off with Channel 9 for never showing my favorite Grand Slam :(

Commentary team will include Sandy Roberts, John Alexander, John Fitzgerald, John Barrett, Garry Williams(from BBC), and Virginia Ruzici.

Those with Foxtel will also get full 2 weeks coverage.

OMG!!!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

During the Australian Open, I remember Sandy Roberts saying Ch. 7 would be showing the Fench Open this year...but I didn't believe him...It was so annoying when Ch. 9 only showed the SF onwards. I missed so many good matches...

Too bad the French Open's on at the same time as the World Cup...I wanna watch both of them....

wow thats great! I was always pissed off when they only showed semis on, the change was long overdue. I expect that the coverage will be filled with Lleyton Hewitt matches though, but still, its better than nothing.
I think thw world cup coverage will be shown in the daytime and the French Open at night, so there probably ownt be any clashes.

This is good news. :)

However, I hope they do not just focus on one court all the time and show women's matches as much as the men's. That's why in some respect, the highlights were good as they showed a few women's matches from other courts.

I'm not holding my breath though.

Simon there is a blurb on page 109.

BTW on a completely unrelated topic, Channel 9 has coverage of the World Cup right?

I thought it was SBS?

I just hope they won't concentrate all on Lleyton Hewitt. :(
Sorry to say this, but I was glad all the Aussie men went out early at the Aus Open, so that they wouldn't concentrate solely on them...

TS
May 3rd, 2002, 05:52 PM
so was I danker ;) I can only take so much of Wayne Arthurs on court 500

I wish it was SBS, they at least treat it with some respect...but I think one of the commercial networks has the rights (I think 9)...I dont know, I have to find out for sure. Maybe SBS will show some games? (according to my brother)..oh well, we'll find out soon enough.

The World Cup will be on SBS and Ch. 9. It depends on what match is on. Go to www.sbs.com.au/WC/WC.htm for complete listings...

Fantastic! I'm even more excited as I will be able to get coverage via Channel 7, Foxtel and Eurosport!!!!! Let's hope they show seperate matches then I can pick and choose what I watch.

And for those in Australia who don't think you can get Eurosport... let me tell you that you CAN GET IT ... I have it. But you do need a special satellite dish and a little bit of $.

Such a good news to all tennis fans in Australia!!! I'm getting very exciting too as I have the live coverage from foxtel as well!!

I always get frustrated with the amount of tennis coverage from Foxtel, but in May there are tennis coverages week by week... which is a big surprise to me, and I am very happy about it!!! However, not sure what will it be like after the French Open coverage though???

To other tennis fans who is a Foxtel subscriber in Australia, do you think we can send some comments to Foxtel to request a bit more tennis coverage??? I wonder if we can do something about it.........

I agree entirely. I think we should send positive messages to Foxtel, Optus and Fox Sports saying how fantastic it is to get all this great tennis coverage in May and can they keep up the great coverage for the rest of the year. People respond to positives more than negatives... that's my experience anyway.

I will email them this week

I also get lots of coverage on Eurosport but it is in French language so i would prefer more English coverage on Fox Sports.

HI TennisVideos

It's Kate from CNNSI boards (Oz tennis legends fame) etc.

Have you heard of a Ken Munson???? Could be a retired Aussie player from 60's or maybe late 50's

I just realised that we have 2 new commentators -- Garry Williams and Virginia Ruzici. That's cool! I hope they're not annoying like some commentators. I've never heard 'em before. What about LIZ SMYLIE?? Where is she?

Hi Kate! Good to see you posting here. No, I haven't heard of that guy.... have you tried Doug? He would probably know for sure. What is your website address again, I have lost it. It's a great site and I want to keep accessing it.

Thanks

Marky Mark

Foxtel have used Gerry Williams and Virginia Ruzici in the past and they are quite good. I love John Barret's commentary...

Thanks tennisvideos! I like John Barrett as well...He's a bit old, but he knows a lot about tennis. He can get so excited at times.

Do you know where Liz Smylie is? She's really good as well. Has she quit commentating, or is she just unavailable?

Too bad it's the same time as World Cup. I don't like soccer, but my two housemates like soccer and they don't like tennis. Well, we have Foxtel, but I think we need to make schedule to make everything's fair :(

It's mean I won't be able to watch tennis those whole 14 days

didnt they use virginia ruzici for channel 9's french open coverage two years ago? I remember her commentating for the arantxa-conchita semi, or at least i think it was her could have been someone else.

thx for ebeing considerate and posting that Terry...u've made 1 happy dude  !

i mean they always treated the french like a poor and inferior cousin of the other slams! and imo it produces the best, most fiercest tennis but weve been seriously deprived !!!!

good decision channel 7

Thats too bad kfh! Maybe you can bargain with them ;)
My brother is a huge soccer fan so we're gonna be having fist fights over the TV too! I do like soccer and Im looking forward to the World Cup, but it just cant compete with tennis ;)

Experimentee you are right. I do remember Virginia being used on a few telecasts, not just that one :)

Yes guys I will also write to Foxtel, hopefully we can get more! The way I see it is that they show every single Tier 1 event and the 3 Grand Slams...it'd be nice to get a few more too, and maybe more than just the semi finals and finals.

My uncle is actually the manager of FoxSports in Australia. I;'ve tried telling him to show more tennis, especially live tennis on Foxtel, so maybe he is beginning to listen. He actually told me that the Women's Golf rates pretty high which I was surprised at.

Since Optus and Foxtel have merged, Foxtel should be broadcasting alot more teenis come July when I think the takeover begins...

hasn't the change already occured  I thought it had because the sports channels have all changed on Optus now, we have espn, optus sports 1 and optus sports 2 plus a couple of others, i think the optus sports 1 & 2 are the same a fox sports etc...:)

The merger still hasn't been approved by the ACCC. However, in the meantime, Optus subscribers can get the 2 Fox Sports channels - which they have renamed Optus Sports 1 & 2.

However, the Optus channels won't be available to Foxtel subscribers until November I think.

Some of us, including Austar subscribers, are lucky enough to have the lot.

Anyway, it is great to see more tennis being broadcast on Fox Sports. Let's hope it continues. I have sent them a note of encouragement and will continue to do so as the months go by.
