View Full Version : Will Hantuchova whip Hingis once again?

Daniela Hantuchova scored a stunning win over Martina Hingis when she destroyed the former #1 player in straight set in the finals at Indian Wells last March.

http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20020502/capt.1020356122germany_barclay_cup_xhbg113.jpg

As the two are now scheduled to meet in the quarters at the Betty Barclay event, many wonder if Hantuchova can defeat Hingis once again.
Hingis has got to be worring about this match because even if she does win a close three setter, she will probably be eliminated in the next round by the current #1 player, VENUS WILLIAMS.

This match will be another chance for Hantuchova to prove that her win over Hingis was no fluke and that she can be a top ten player in the future.

The smart money will probably pick Hingis in three sets.

Bye all. :wavey:

I think Hingis will win in two sets. Martina is much fresher than Daniela...Daniela isn´t playing as well as she did in march.
Martina has probably figured out a way how to beat her.

I'd love to see a repeat! But, I imagine Martina will play much smarter this time and, as mentioned above, Dani's not been playing as well as she did then.

BUT, I'm holding out hope for a repeat!! GO DANI GO

I would be great if Daniela won again but I think Martina will win and I'm predicting it won't even be close :(

I like Daniela but you cannot keep Martina down. She will rise like a phoenix from the flamy red courts of Hamburg to defeat the youngster! GO MARTINA!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I think Hingis is going to win this one.

I very much want Dani to win this one, but I too think Hingis will likely come away with the win. The surface is not really to her advantage, and it will be harder to make as many winners and stay patient against Martina. However, she does know how to rise to the occasion against the top players, so I still think this could be a close one, and wouldn't rule out another win for Daniela if she can pick up her game enough.

I would put my money on Martina since Daniela has not been playing well. But this could be a catalyst for Daniela to get back into her groove. I hope it would be a closely fought match though.

Martina in 2...

But let's not start creating legend out of Martina, on the "Flamy red court" yet!!!:)

I mean, "rising like a phoenix from the flamy red courts of Hamburg"???? That's stuff made for legends.

Well, i suppose you the ever hopeful, i shouldn't spoil your fun. Soryy about that. But let me know when you come back to REALITY, okay ;)

How are you doing, treufreund?:wavey:

I'd love to see Daniela defeating Martina once again. But I agree with some posters here, Daniela is not playing good on clay, and I think Martina will win this one.

Also, I want Venus to beat her in Semis;) :wavey:

Quite frankly, who knows? I mean, if we see the Martina that looked inept and void of ideas as she did against Hantuchova, depsite the surface, Hantuchova could do very well.

Beating Torrens Valero love and one is no preparation for meeting a Daniela who is winning more matches on clay than she was 2 weeks ago.

Having said all of that, I believe that Hingis will out-hussle Hantuchova in 2.

I never make predictions, :o but I will make an exception in this case and boldly state that the winner of this match-up will have a last name that begins with an "H". :p :)

lol@Ntosake

I'd love to see Daniela repeat her win in March, but it's clear that Hingis has the advantage on clay. But it's not a match I'd bet money on.

With one break in each set, Daniela hardly "whipped" Martina Hingis last time they met.

And Venus will probably beat Hingis if she gets so far? Hingis has a winning record against Venus, has had a better career, and has done better in the big events so far this year. And it's on clay. Tee, whoever wins, I'll be here, posting my thoughts. If Martina beats both these players, run. Far away. (I see you already tried to save face by saying Marti will win in three...)

Now, ignoring ignorant, obnoxious posters and on to the topic. Martina should and can win, but she has a habit of losing when she shouldn't and winning when she should. And how much will the clay help her? She has a losing record to Davenport and Capriati on clay, and she is usually stretched by Seles, Kournikova, and Venus on this surface, players she has dominated on other surfaces. So don't get too cocky now. I think Martina will win in three sets, something like 1-6, 6-3 6-2. She'll get shell-shocked in the first set, but come back like she (almost) always does.

I cant wait for Hingis wo bat both Danieal and Venus, all we'll see is Tee running for the hills.(like it does every time it's 'fav' loses) Oh the suspense.

An easy win for Hingis.

Just watch my words: a pure and simple dismissal. Sorry Daniela, I have to be objective.

TeeRexx
May 2nd, 2002, 10:13 PM
I have not "run for the hills" on a Williams loss in the past and will not do so in the future.
Straight set loses, that are not really competitive, are a whipping, by the way.

Anyway, the majority of posters in this thread either think Hingis will lose or just plain want her to lose.
I still think she should get by Dani in a tough match and then lose to VENUS, as she has most of the time in the past two years.

*sigh* Do you have to post here so often Tee Rexx, it becomes annoying to have to click on the little "ignore" button to read your posts. Maybe YOU want Martina to lose, but I think the majority know that Daniela wont win.

Venus may win against Martina in the semifinals. I have no delusions that my fav is invincible(unlike SOME people). I would love for Hingis to beat Venus as it would be a great boost in confidence for her. I've been waiting for a Martina-Venus matchup all year, and I hope that if they do meet Martina can win.

Martian Martin
May 2nd, 2002, 11:21 PM
No. Marti has more knowledge of clay than Daniela, and Daniela's serve won't be as effective on clay as it was on a quick hard court. It'll be a tough match, but Marti will win this time.

  Not sure what that means. If she wins when she should how can she lose when she shouldn't.....oh well the logic escapes me at the moment.

I agree that in the past Martina has had a better record than Venus. But that is the distant past. The recent past, present, and probably the future it is not Marti, but Venus who reigns. Does that mean Hingis will never defeat Venus again? Probably not, she may win sometime but it will be rare......very rare.

RockSteady
May 2nd, 2002, 11:56 PM
I meant to say "winning when she shouldn't". For those who don't understand, Hingis has never played the role of 'favorite' very well, but tends to beat the power players harshly after losing a few in a row (remember Davenport a few years ago).

Anyway, it wasn't the distant past Hingis beat Venus. The last four times they played, Venus who three, no? One was on grass, where she barely survived, one was on outdoor American hard courts, where Martina should have won an easy third set but missed a smash to give her match point and serving, and the third time was during the worst part of Hingis' career, yet Hingis still held set points.

The time Hingis won was a crushing. 6-1 6-1.  The most embarrassing loss of Venus' career, no? Lol, she got beat badly, but moving on...

...don't think I'm equating ALL of Venus' recent wins over Martina to luck, but let's face it, she has never beaten Martina "easily" since 1999.

i disagree with that ;) daniela was pushing martina around the court and punishing her weak groundstrokes, martina just returned the ball to the middle of the court in hopes that daniela would cool off and make the errors.

in the first set, but come back like she (almost) always does.

martina has a better career and leads in the head-to-head because her wins came when venus was still inexperienced and lacked big match play (pre 1999), but who has the better career after 1999?

anyway  ....onto the question at hand...martina's playing very well, judging from her scorelines and will win easily again tomorrow against daniela.

May 3rd, 2002, 01:04 AM
I hope daniela will spank hingis again ..... but hingis should be prepared now! She knows that giving Daniela balls back didn't win her the match last time. So she must be aggressive (even on clay) because Daniela will be aggressive for sure!

i think Hingis will win that one after a 1st hard fought set (7-6 6-2).....

TeeRexx
May 3rd, 2002, 05:47 AM
Some seem to pass by the fact that I give Hingis the slight edge.
Hantuchova should have some confidence, but she will have to beat Hingis again to be fully confident and to get in the top ten by the end of the year. That will not be easy to do against a determined Hingis.

However, another straight set loss would be disasterous to Hingis and thus lowering her chances of capturing the elusive RG title for a caree slam.
