Her schedule up to Wimbledon:

Gold Coast
Australian Open
Indian Wells

French Open

Nov 10th, 2005, 07:36 PM
Why is she playing only one clay court tournament before the USO? Is she playing FED CUP or something? Otherwise I like her schedule!

Nov 11th, 2005, 08:24 AM
I'd think she goes home...and for japanese players (maybe asians), I've heard a lot from players that the trips to Europe make them tired... maybe the distance. but again there might be some additions. :)

I don't think Ai would play Fedcup any more... time for youngsters to take over.

Nov 11th, 2005, 08:46 AM
Thanks for the insight Ex Hopman...plus the schedule is pretty thin in April anyway....She does also seem to add last minutes tournaments here or there...

ANy idea who she's going to play doubles with next year? (I know I should have asked that in the dubs thread but ehh....)

Dec 29th, 2005, 08:04 AM
There's a pic of Ai during a practice session with Hingis and she's wearing Prince...Has she ditched Nike? This is an exciting new move!

It would be funny if Ai sugiyama won all of the titles but is a another way it would be great because then she would be number 1 in the world :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Dec 30th, 2005, 06:19 PM
The Draw for Gold Coast has been released and Ai faces Safarova in the first round. Good Luck Ai!

Dec 30th, 2005, 07:46 PM
I realllllly like Ai's draw...the first seed she'd face is Schnyder who's she's never lost to and has some pretty easy wins over! Go Ai! This is a potentially tricky first round though...I'm confident that she'll get through it!

Dec 31st, 2005, 08:05 AM
So has Ai really swithced to Prince apparel? Or was that just a shirt in the photo...I'm interested to know but I suppose we'll find out in short time!

ex hopman
Dec 31st, 2005, 08:54 AM
during the Sharapova tour matches, she was wearing Nike tho??
We'll see! I want to know who she's playing doubles with too.
Possibly Dani again tho!

Dec 31st, 2005, 09:10 AM
Yeah should be interesting! What can you tell us about the exhibitions???

ex hopman
Dec 31st, 2005, 10:12 PM
Ai won the first exhibition singles match against Sharapova, but lost the next two...in doubles, Sharapova and Ai won two doubles matches . Lots of people who watched the games say Ai was really in good form. Let's see how she plays!! :)

Dec 31st, 2005, 10:16 PM
Great to hear Ex Hopman! I have a great feeling about this start to the year! She's a couple hours from her first match of the year!!! GO AI!

Any other news about Ai? Anything new?

Jan 1st, 2006, 07:19 AM
Ai lost 1-6, 2-6 to Safarova...a terrrrrrrrrrrible start to the year..oh well I bet she'll get back on track in Sydney! She IS wearing Prince aparrel now though! GO AI!

Jan 2nd, 2006, 04:41 PM

ex hopman
Jan 2nd, 2006, 11:55 PM
Ai was supposed to play doubles with Sharapova, from what I heard... but she withdrew.

Yea, she switched her wear contract to Prince now.
It kinda sucks huh... Oh well..

She can do better in Sydney!

Jan 2nd, 2006, 11:58 PM
Is she going to play doubles with Sharapovca more this year? Any news on her doubles partner?

Is she said to be in good form despite the loss?

Jan 4th, 2006, 03:41 PM
Ai is going to play doubles with SHARAPOVA? O_O Wow.
I thought she was playing with Hantuchova, though.

Daniel Nixon
Jan 24th, 2006, 04:39 PM
 she is playing with Daniela again. but she played well kim so i dont know why is isnt playing with her? do you? How do you think she is playing at the open ?

Jan 25th, 2006, 07:09 PM
Kim doesn't play doubles anymore...that's why...

Jan 30th, 2006, 06:57 AM
Ai is in Tokyo now good luck Ai

Feb 1st, 2006, 10:44 AM
Ai is in Tokyo now good luck Ai
uh,your wish was sadly to no avail... but hey,the season is still young, and i believe in my ai-baby!!

Feb 1st, 2006, 06:51 PM
Ai/Dani won 6-3 6-2 though, in their first round doubles match! Into the quarters :)

Feb 21st, 2006, 03:52 AM
Ai is 0-5 this season so far! AGAIN!

But she seems to have switched racquets...so maybe she's trying something new! That's a good sign! She'll get it together I know it! GO AI!

PLus she had leads in both sets so maybe she's starting to get it going.

Feb 21st, 2006, 02:51 PM
Ai  :help:

Feb 26th, 2006, 03:57 PM
I think Ai will find her form and start to win in Doha :)

Good luck :wavey:

Feb 28th, 2006, 06:09 PM
GUESS WHAT????!!!!!!
Ai won a match!!! She soundly beat Selima Sfar 6-3, 6-3! That will give her some much needed confidence and she can relax and play well finally. Now she can prove that age has nothing to do with this rough start to the year and start winning!! GO AI!

Feb 28th, 2006, 08:48 PM
Ai :yeah:

Mar 2nd, 2006, 12:20 AM
I watched the last several games of Ai's match and she was really hitting the ball well...very hard and cleanly! She was pushing Myskina around alot! AT the end of course thbough she got tight again but she fought through it and looked really happy to have beat a top player again!!!!

Question though...does she have a new coach? They zero'd in on this guy and it looks like he may have been her coach...ExHopman would know...

Mar 2nd, 2006, 12:32 AM
Yay, Ai is back! Those fitness drills must be working.

Mar 2nd, 2006, 02:22 AM
Nice win Ai! Good luck against Julia!

Mar 2nd, 2006, 02:54 PM
Congrats to Ai! beat Julia 6-3 6-2, missing only 4 first serves in the first set, and winning the match with an ace :)

Mar 2nd, 2006, 03:01 PM
Ai is in great shape again :woohoo:

Mar 2nd, 2006, 03:09 PM
Congrats Ai! Good luck in the semi finals!

Mar 2nd, 2006, 05:33 PM
OMG I'm so happy for her. I've been waiting for this all year. She's finally playing good tennis. I wish I saw the match vs Schruff. Great job Ai. Now is Petrova. Good Luck Ai:)

Mar 2nd, 2006, 06:51 PM
Ai  :smooch:

Mar 2nd, 2006, 07:06 PM
This is SO exciting!! It sounds like she played realllllly well today! And she served well too which is ALWAYS a good sign with her...and to finish with an ace has to boost her confidence even further! This is a great follow-up after the Myskina match and she also closed out her leads reallly well in both sets today! Go Ai! I think she'll beat Petrova! I HOPE!

Mar 2nd, 2006, 09:10 PM
Good luck Ai  It will be so good for her to beat Nadia :)

Mar 3rd, 2006, 06:51 AM
nice to see Ai backup her big win over myskina with a straight set victory over Schruff! :)

good luck against nadia, it'll be tough!

Mar 3rd, 2006, 10:35 AM
keep going Ai :bounce:
i am so happy to see u back again

Mar 3rd, 2006, 05:08 PM
Nadia def. Ai 6-1 7-6(2)

Nadia was just too good in the first set. In the second set, Ai trailed 0-4, and won five consecutive games, but Nadia regained confidence in the tiebreaker.

 I hope Ai can consistently play in singles now. I'd hope for a final in 2006 :)

Go Sugichova!!

Mar 3rd, 2006, 06:16 PM

Go Sugichova!!
yes, thank you very much for a wonderful week,ai-baby! and you lost absolutely no caste vs a player like nadia!all the best from your biggest german fan!!  :hearts: :hearts:

Mar 4th, 2006, 12:33 AM
^very true.. she's an inspiration!

Sugichova def. (2) Yan/Zheng 6-3 3-6 6-3!! Didn't lose confidence and defeated the defending Aussie Open champs!

Mar 5th, 2006, 06:08 AM
Well it's officially been a verrrry successful week for Ai by getting to the Semis, beating Myskina, losing only to the eventual champion and then winning the doubles! This week will be such a great motivator and confidence booster for her and hopefully it will carry over into Indian Wells (Where she has no pts to defend) and then Miami (where she has only a couple to defend!) Go Ai! She's still got a lot left! :D

Mar 6th, 2006, 12:58 AM
Yeah, Go Ai :) I'm still looking for those trophy pictures myself x.x;

Umm... If Hantuchova isn't playing Indian Wells, will Ai play doubles? If so, with who (do you think)? X.x

Mar 6th, 2006, 02:01 PM
Congrats Ai :bounce: such a week...

well i think she should play with some of the Asian.... maybe Tammy would be lovely again :woohoo:

Mar 7th, 2006, 02:29 AM
Here is Ai's part of the draw

(1) Justine Henin-Hardenne - bye
Tsvetana Pironkova vs. Virginia Ruano Pascual
(WC) Brenda Schultz-McCarthy vs. Aiko Nakamura
(25) Mara Santangelo - bye
(18) Lucie Safarova - bye
Sandra Kloesel vs. (Q) qualifier
Shuai Peng vs. Stephanie Foretz
(14) Ai Sugiyama - bye

Kinda rough if she faces Shuai in the second round and Shuai is playing well, then Safarova probably. Good luck Ai!

Mar 7th, 2006, 03:28 AM
Well this isn't actually tooooo bad...Shuai is at an altime low in confidence and hasn't won a match this year and Foretz is pretty ordinary...It's Safarova who wories me, Ai's played her twice this year and has lost routinely both times...but she has a ton of confidence now so who knows! And JHH who I think Ai matches up well against and beat her soundly in the YEC a few years ago...GOO AI!

Mar 7th, 2006, 07:08 PM
Ai's beaten Justine? That's shocking to me!

Here's hoping the best for Ai!

Mar 13th, 2006, 05:14 AM
Ai is continuing to play well in Indian Wells with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Foretz! A tough first set at the end but then she just walked through the second without a problem. It's great to see her winning these easy matches again.

The next round will really be a test because she's played Safarova twice this year and has gone down easily both times, but this is a different more confident Ai and hopefully she'll know what to do this time!!! I hope she can do it, it would give her a TON of confidence!!!

Mar 14th, 2006, 01:52 AM
YAY! She beat Safarova! In straight sets!! 6-3, 7-5! It was close in the second set and she wasted a lot of MPs in the final game but made it through...This is great for her! She plays Henin-Hhardenne next who she beat last time they played in straight sets! It's going to be tough because JHH just beat Aiko 6-0, 6-0...but Ai is a total different level of player so it'll be good and PROBABLY ON TV!!! GO AI!

Mar 14th, 2006, 04:23 AM
yeah:bounce: She seems to gain more confident and hope to be dangerous for Justine tomorrow...

come on Ai...play like what you did at YEC :bounce:

Mar 14th, 2006, 04:26 AM
Ai and Sania beat the 2 seeds Black/Stubbs tonight 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(8)!!! She's just on fire recently! Hopefully this will pump her up for her match against Justone tomorrow night!!! GO AI!

Mar 14th, 2006, 10:28 PM
Good luck to Ai against Justine, and to Ai/Sania against Daniilidou and Medina Garrigues :)

Mar 19th, 2006, 01:21 AM
Ai lost to Justine in straight sets. 6-2 6-1. Ai/Sania lost 6-2 6-3....

I'm disappointed that Ai & Sania lost against Daniilidou and Medina Garrigues. I thought they had an excellent shot at the title after they beat Cara/Rennae.

EDIT: After Miami, we won't see Ai play until May 15th? Why such a long break?

Mar 19th, 2006, 02:15 AM
She may play before then, she tends to enter tourneys late when she has such a long scheduled layoff....but then again she isn't exactly a fan of the clay...maybe it'll help her! I hope she plays more than that though!

Mar 19th, 2006, 02:52 AM
I hope she does too :) I find it thrilling for her to play, LOL. It'd suck royally if we didn't see any Ai (or Sugichova LOL) for a month and a half!

Mar 21st, 2006, 05:15 PM
Ai is in Miami :wavey:

Mar 25th, 2006, 12:27 AM
Ai def Julia 6-1 6-1 ,impressive win over the hard hitting power.. hope she has more confident to beat Likhovtseva in the next round... :bounce:

Mar 25th, 2006, 01:36 AM
Ai played Likhovtseva ;ast year in this round and lost a lonnnnnng three setter but then Ai beat Likkhovtseva at the end of last year in another three setter! Ai is on fire right now and Likhovtseva is not playing great so hopefully she can take her out again! They're great friends and have played many times...GO AI!

Mar 25th, 2006, 08:20 AM
wow! ai played really well today! the draw opened up and if she plays like she did today she really has a chance to go pretty far in this tourney!! :)

Mar 26th, 2006, 03:50 AM
Ai/Dani played well today against Anastasia/Dinara to win 6-4 6-2! A lot of long games, but they came out on top ultimately.

I'm so happy; to me, this is a big win, because their opponents weren't easy ones. Good luck to Ai/Dani in the second round (I think it'll be played on Monday, but I'm not sure.)

Good luck to Ai against Elena L! :) I hope your fire burns for a long time to come!

Mar 26th, 2006, 09:59 PM
Go Ai!!!!!! Glad she's finally starting to play well again :)

Mar 26th, 2006, 11:19 PM
Great job Ai! Slow start but great finish!

Mar 26th, 2006, 11:55 PM
great bagel in the third..Ai :bounce:

Mar 27th, 2006, 08:16 PM
Ai is in the QF of Miami! She beat Sofie Arvidsson 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2! Great comeback again Ai! Now she plays Kuznetsova who she's 1-2 lifetime against but Ai beat her in San Diego last summer and lost in a third set tiebreaker the year before on clay. Ai is in great form and says she's having a lot of fun so hopefully she'll take out Kuznetsova and get to the SEMIS!!!!

Mar 27th, 2006, 08:45 PM
I hope the match against Svetlana will be good. I think it's basically 50/50 right now. I hope she makes it to the semifinals though. It would be fantastic :)

She plays doubles later on with Daniela :) Good luck Ai!

Mar 28th, 2006, 01:12 AM
Ai/Dani beat Bryanne/Carly 6-3 2-6 6-2. :) Good job girls!

Mar 28th, 2006, 03:26 AM
Good job Ai/Daniela but why three sets?

Mar 28th, 2006, 07:28 PM
Ai lost to Svetlana 6-0 7-6 (4)

She had a chance to serve for the second set at 5-4 but couldn't manage. But fantastic showing from Ai... A nice quarterfinal finish to partner up with her Round of 16 at IW and her SF at Doha :) I wonder where she'll go in the rankings.

If she continues improving like this, I think she might be able to beat a Russian soon. She's not being completely demolished here. She brought Petrova and Kuznetsova to tiebreakers.

I hope she wins the doubles against Svetlana/Mauresmo... I really want Ai/Dani to get the title!

Mar 28th, 2006, 07:35 PM
Remember she beat a Russian in Doha! Actually I thiknk she plays well against them...she's beat Petrova, Dementieva, Myskina, Likhovtseva multiple times and Kuznetsova once. GOod tourney for Ai though I'm frustrated with this loss because it was very winnable and she had a bunch of chances...

She'll beat her in doubles hopefully!!!

Now she takes ALL of April off and only plays ONE clay tourney (Italy) before heading to RG. Hope she plays another one last minute...GO AI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mar 29th, 2006, 12:54 AM
I saw her on the Berlin Entry list, though. I hope she plays in Charleston but I doubt it!

I forgot Myskina was Russian:lol: I just meant that with her close sets with Russians recently (Petty and Kuzny in TBs) she might be one of the Top Russians soon :)

I hope they do well in doubles... Amelie/Svetlana are a hard pair to beat...

ex hopman
Mar 30th, 2006, 10:08 AM
Oh she entered Berlin? That wasn't her original plan, but it's good!!

She also plays as a FedCup Japan team this year against Switzerland (hopefully, the team wouldn't be Hingis and Patty...)

Her teammate would be Ayumi Morita!!

Mar 30th, 2006, 07:23 PM
SHe's playing Fed CUp! THAT'S GREAT! I thought she was done with Fed Cup! This is so exciting!

Apr 1st, 2006, 09:29 PM
I have been thinking. Is Hantuchova really the best Doubles partner for Ai?

I would love to see her try playing with someone new. Maybe with Nadia, that could be an interesting pair.

Ai/Dani are great, don't get me wrong, but... maybe Ai should use Berlin (a tournament I don't think Dani is playing) to experiment with someone new.

Apr 2nd, 2006, 12:45 AM
Daniela isn't the best partner Ai has had, they have the potential to beat any other team on any surface, but they blow soooo many leads...but eh...they're doing okay this year...hopefully theyll get to the YEC.

Jul 25th, 2006, 08:33 PM
Ai beat Peschke 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of Stanford! Great effort for Ai...it got a bit shaky there at the end but she pulled through! Now she plays Golovin...she's 0-3 against her but Ai is playing much better this year than last year...Golovin doesn't seem quite as good as she was months ago. Ai definitely has a shot!!

Jul 25th, 2006, 11:33 PM
Ai :woohoo:

Good luck against Golovin :)

Jul 29th, 2006, 08:19 PM

Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS [4] - BYE

sugiyama and hantuchova are in the finale in los angeles !! come on girls !! it could be another title for you !!

Aug 13th, 2006, 09:08 PM
In doubles, Hantuchova choses not to play, thus Sugiyama has partnered... Nathalie Dechy? They are the eighth-seeded duo, so they will not face seeds early on. However, they do not get a bye.

[8] Dechy/Sugiyama vs. M. Garrigues/Salerni
Hurasova/Pennetta vs Q
Dekmeijere/Dushevina vs. Krajicek/Santangelo
[4] Safina/Srebotnik - BYE

I hope they can get far. And I can't wait to see them play! (Although I am disappointed I won't see a Hantuyama match, seeing Ai at all will be great!)

Aug 13th, 2006, 09:51 PM
Good luck at seeing Ai volcanic_tennis :)

Remember to share your reports etc. with us :)

Aug 13th, 2006, 10:48 PM
I will ^^ I'm going to walk around with an eye out for her practice sessions, for sure. I don't think she'll be there tomorrow - seeing as how she's playing in LA tonight - but probably will see her Tuesday :D

I'll share reports for sure!

Aug 16th, 2006, 01:03 AM
Good for Ai, very important for her to win this match given the bad loss to Granville...hopefully she can take Medina Gerrigues out...she's better than her.

Aug 16th, 2006, 04:07 AM
What an excellent match, but Ai was nervous. Everyone was against her. I hated the crowd. I yelled as hard as I could to keep her head up, "Go Sugiyama!!"
She madew a lot of bad errors but also a lot of wonderful shots!

Aug 16th, 2006, 04:35 AM
OH great tell us more!! Why do you say she was so nervous? Did she have her mom or coach on court with her?? How did she look, happy at the end? Was the crowd rude?? Explain as much as you can, how great you got to see her play!

Aug 16th, 2006, 12:31 PM
I watched the match on TV :) Fusako came to do some coaching at some breaks. Ai made so many errors though and I wasn't too impressed but good to see her through. I got to watch the second set at something like 3-2 or 3-3. Fusako was trying to teach Ai something about being technical at the break and was demonstrating waving her hand. Good to see her through. She plays onr of my favourites, Medina next but I am 100% for Sugi :)

That's a verrry solid win, now Kuznetsova, who she can beat...but it will be tooooouuugghhh...GO AI!

Aug 16th, 2006, 11:32 PM
Ai and Nathalie won their first round doubles match in straight sets! I like Ai's partnership with Dechy, I think they can do well!

Aug 17th, 2006, 01:51 AM
In my report in the Roger's Cup section you'll be able to read about both the singles and doubles today...

But as for the Wozniak match - the crowd was for the hometown girl, obviously, because we don't have any good players. But I was pissed off when they were cheering at Ai's mistakes. I think it got to her, at one point, because she missed a few, but like, REALLY missed them.

She looked happy to win, but she didn't thank the crowd much. I think she did it specifically for me, because I was the only one yelling out for her

Aug 17th, 2006, 02:33 PM
Good luck Ai, in your next match ˇ

Aug 18th, 2006, 01:18 AM
Too bad in singles...she had her chances.....In dubs though she's looking good!! I like her partnership with Dechy!

Aug 18th, 2006, 06:13 AM
Dechy has long limbs, serves well, makes a lot of touch-volleys, and is good, but very streaky.
Sugiyama was a genius in this match, no less. Really won the match with her positive outlook, because Dechy was so down from her Singles loss.

Aug 18th, 2006, 06:41 AM
Great thanks! They seem to have fun out there together?

Aug 18th, 2006, 04:24 PM
Oh yeah, but most players seem to have fun playing doubles out there ^^ The only one I saw unhappy was Chakvetadze and Alona Bondarenko... such crybabies! BUt I think it's just immaturity.

I was just so impressed with Sugiyama. She made a few mistakes, but she made so many good shots... and so did Dechy! I was shocked at how good Dechy was. And... I get to go back today, and watch them play [4] Safina/Srebotnik  I wasn't supposed to go back, but, well, my mom got tickets from a friend...

Aug 22nd, 2006, 06:20 PM

I am sooooooo excited :D :woohoo:

I'm so happy for you -sugi-!!! :D It's so exciting!

Ai's US Open 2006 Draw:

[14] Schiavone vs. Oprandi
Mirza vs. Sprem
Muller vs. Yakimova
Q vs. [21] Peer
[28]Sugiyama vs. Ondraskova
Garbin vs. Yuan
King vs. Molik
Camerin vs. [2] H-Hardenne

I think she'll make it to to the third round - with the tennis she's been playing, I'm sure she'll get past those opponents - but I'm sad that she had to be in THAT section of the draw... I don't know if she can upset Justine. If she plays her absolute best tennis, yes, I think she can... Justine's not fit, but I'm still scared.

What a match from Ai!! She was on fire! Zuzana made 20 unforced errors, though.

Ai won 51 points to Zuzana's 19, had 79% first serves in, 82% points won on first serve, 6/7 break point conversions, never faced a break point, 1 ace and 2 double faults... a 40 minute match!! Wow.

Congratulations Ai :bounce: You are the first winner at the US open!!

Ai is playing in Beijing! Here is her part of the draw!

(4)Nicole Vaidisova vs Bye
Ai Sugiyama vs Q
Shuai Peng vs Catalina Castano
Gisela Dulko vs (8)Maria Kirilenko

A nice opener but then she has to deal with Vaidisova. Good luck Ai! You can do it!

Sep 17th, 2006, 12:48 AM
I hope she can play aganist Nicole Vaidisova :) I think she has what it takes to challenge the Czech! You know, every match she's played this year she's gotten better - and I think she can pose a serious threat here.

It'll be fun to see if she plays doubles without Hantuchova!

Ai is playing doubles with Alicia Molik :hearts: :bounce:
It'll be fun to see how they do!
Their first round is versus Domachowska and Kirilenko. Then they would probably play (3) Daniilidou/Garrigues.
I hope they do well, it's an awesome combination :)

Sep 19th, 2006, 02:10 AM
:hearts: Ai & Alicia won 6-3 6-2 over Domachowska/Kirilenko
Wonderful start to the tournament for them :bounce:

But Ai plays Alicia in the first round :o The 'luck' of the draw, eh? They play tomorrow.

I hope Ai wins, because I'd be very interested to see her face off against Vaidisova for the first time... I think Ai could very well trouble the young Czech :) If she plays like she's been playing in Montreal & New York, anyways!!

Ai/Alicia play against the winner of Laine/M. Sanchez vs. (3) Danillidou/M Garrigues. It'll probably be on Thursday according to the site.

Sep 19th, 2006, 10:38 AM
:hearts: Ai beat Alicia 6-2 7-6! :bounce: and will now face off against Vaidisova ;)

too bad she had to play her doubles partner O_o

Sep 21st, 2006, 12:39 AM
I only have it in livestream format, and my file is 1.2 GB large...

With this format, I can't fast forward - two hours later, I get to the match, see Nicole double fault, and then accidentally close it :fiery: I then redo it, and two hours later, I watch up until 3-4 deuce.... and accidentally close it AGAIN :fiery::fiery::fiery:

So frustrated...

I'm really sorry about that x_x I still have trouble with the Vaidisova-Sugiyama video. I got it in .avi form, but I can't play it...

Sep 30th, 2006, 11:02 PM
:):) Good luck against Eleni today!! The final will start five hours from now :)

I hope she wins... it'd be SUCH a boost of confidence!!

Not too long after Daniilidou completed her win, Sugiyama polished off a rout of her own, defeating Virginia Ruano Pascual, 60 63. The No.4-seeded Japanese veteran took the offensive throughout the victory, coming into net often to finish off the points and cracking open rallies with her flat, two-handed backhand.

"In the first set she didn't have her rhythm," Sugiyama said, "in the second set she was playing better. I tried to hit to her backhand, even though her slice stays very low. It feels really good to be here; it's comfortable like home. I like Korean food. The tournament, the hotel, just everything has been great. My physical and mental condition are good. Eleni is playing great. I look forward to tomorrow."

Sugiyama is also seeking a return to one of the higher ranking classes. Formerly in the Top 10, she came here ranked No.27. But her results throughout this year have shown she still has what it takes: she has reached rounds of 16 or better at 10 events now, including this tournament, and she has had wins over the likes of Anastasia Myskina, Martina Hingis and, most recently, Nicole Vaidisova.

"I was in the Top 10 two years ago, and now I am in the Top 30. I'd like to get back to the Top 10, if possible. Also, Grand Slams are important to me. My best result at the Grand Slams is the quarterfinals. I would like to go further."

Sugiyama leads her head-to-head against Daniilidou, 4-2. That includes a 3-0 mark on hardcourts for the Japanese veteran and 2-0 for the Greek on grass. Their only other meeting was a first round battle on the red clay of Roland Garros earlier this year, a battle from which Sugiyama emerged victorious, 67(1) 60 63.

:hearts: She has ambition!! I think she can do whatever she sets her mind to... Honestly!! I think she believes in herself - and that's what's important! It's so great to read that :hearts:

EDIT: I have also uploaded Peng Shuai vs. Ai in the videos thread in GM :)

Oct 1st, 2006, 09:28 PM
She lost the final in a 3rd set TB. It's too bad because Ai could have really taken that and gone on an even longer roll....Daniilidou meanwhile will probably go back into her usual early exits....Ai should have really won but it was a good run anway....hopefully she'll take on Tokyo!!! She has a tougher draw there but she can do it!

She missed three match points?? oh god.....that's even worse, I though she was never up that late in the match...that's even worse...hopefully she'll rebound in Tokyo...

Oct 3rd, 2006, 02:13 AM
She missed three match points?? oh god.....that's even worse, I though she was never up that late in the match...that's even worse...hopefully she'll rebound in Tokyo...

so it was written in the article on WTATour.com
She had 0-40 on Eleni's serve
Eleni deserved to win.

But in Tokyo, she's only playing singles, so I hope she can do well, and then she's taking the Moscow week off to get ready for Zurich & Linz. In Zurich & Linz, her and Dani will most likely fight for spot #4 in the YEC. Unfortunately, Vivi and Paola are probably going to surpass them this week, so they'll probably need to win both tournaments, or at least get really far, to qualify

Oct 4th, 2006, 05:52 AM

And she has answered their call on several occasions, capturing two of her six career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles at the Tokyo [Japan Open]; this week, she goes for her third title at the Tier III event. Come along for the ride with the Japanese superstar in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Player Blog.

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

Hello everyone,

I arrived in Tokyo on Sunday night around 11pm, after an 8:15pm flight from Seoul. I had just lost in the final there. It was pretty tough because I had three championship points and still lost, to Eleni Daniilidou. Maybe it was meant to be, but I will try not to make the same mistakes in the future. I just have to forget about it and do my best here!

My mom is with me as well as my massage therapist. I couldn't go to my house because it's about one and a half hours away from the site, so we're staying in the hotel. Even though I'm in Japan, it feels just like going to another tournament because I didn't get to go home! But my friends are coming into the city to cheer me up so that's good.

Monday, I started my day with a big American breakfast in the hotel. I like to eat a big breakfast - eggs, sausage, toast and a latte. It's really nice to stay in that hotel because it's so close to the tournament. The people working there are very nice to me. They don't get too close but they give me lots of support.

On Tuesday, I hit for about one and a half hours and then trained in the gym for another one and a half hours. I'm working on my core stability right now, so I'm not using the machines much.

We had the player party last night in hotel. There was a VIP reception I went to. Roger Federer, Tommy Robredo, Paradorn Srichaphan, Gisela Dulko and Maria Kirlilenko were there with me too. I know most of those guys but it was the first time I've talked to Roger. I had pictures with him. He's so cool and nice. I was asking him what kind of food he was eatng and told me he likes Japanese food and is eating sushi and Kobe beef. When I heard that, I didn't need to give him any advice! He's eating the best food we have in Japan.

Afterwards we went to the main party, and Roger, Tommy, Gisela and I took part in the 'kagami biraki' crashing or breaking of the saki drum with wooden hammers. I think it's a traditional ceremony for good luck for the beginning of an event. Those were the real saki drums. They make the saki in those drums and sometimes they're even bigger. I love saki. It's made from distilled rice. You can have sweet, dry, hot and cold. I like cold the best. With sushi, dry is nicest. There are so many kinds and they're all different. The taste of it depends on the soil where the rice grows.

We didn't really have time to eat at the party because I was so busy having photos taken with all the guests and sponsors. It was nice to feel so much support from them. After that, I went to the Italian restaurant in the hotel with my friends and my team. It was nice to finally relax with all my favorite people!

Today I had my usual American breakfast at the hotel. I came to the tournament site and did my normal warm-up routine. Matches started at 10am. It's early for me! I was lucky I played second on center court. I hit a little bit on center court to warm up. The match before mine went three sets so it was nice to have a little extra time to prepare.

At the beginning of my match against Emma Laine, I was a little bit nervous. It's my first match in Japan since the Toray Pan Pacific Open in February. Playing in my home country is not the same as if I was playing elsewhere. I have a higher expectation of myself. I want to perform well. The match started well. Emma is a tough player and she played well, but I was still able to win in straight sets.

After the match, there were four little kids from a local tennis club who came on court, each to play one point against me. It's not usual to do this but they were so cute and hit the the ball pretty good. I played a few points with them, then took four Polaroid pictures, one for each of them. The emcee then asked me to speak to the crowd. I thanked them for all the support they always give me and thanked everyone for coming out today. I hope they enjoy watching Federer for his first match in Japan. I'll go out to watch him too later.

It was only Wednesday today, but lots of people came to watch and I heard Saturday and Sunday are already sold out. Hopefully the weather will be okay but we always have the retractable roof in case of rain.

My sister and friends are here. It's especially nice because I don't get to see them too often. I play my next match tomorrow, against Vania King, so I'm just getting a massage now to cool off my muscles and get ready for it.

I'll talk you all tomorrow. Bye for now!

I like her blog!

Oct 5th, 2006, 05:17 PM
Ai :yippee: :tennis: :smooch:

Oct 5th, 2006, 08:58 PM
Nice going Ai! It's a good sign that she's pulling out these matches...especially after the Seoul Final! She's got a good draw again! Hopefully, She'll take out Chan, and easily...will be tough! But Chan has no experience and plays kind of like Ai.

Oct 8th, 2006, 04:17 AM
Too bad Ai lost to Chan  She's played a lot lately - QF in Beijing, F in Seoul, and another QF here in Tokyo, plus a few doubles matches, so she must need rest.

luckily, she's not playing this week, and then going to try to qualify for Zurich (I hope she quallifies... actually, I hope she doesn't have to :o last year she was the top seed, and it would suck for her to be the top seed, again!)

Ai and Dani are 5th in the race now. They have 1746 Pts, and Vivi/Paola have 1774 pts :tape: It sucks that it isn't a round robin of eight teams, it'd be so much funner to watch than a sucky four-team draw :fiery: They screwed up with that format.

that being said, dani/ai are playing in zurich, and linz, so they need to do really well there if they want to qualify :)

Hasselt will be Sugi's last event of the season, unless they qualify for YEC. since Hantuchova isn't playing there, it'll be fun to see who she plays doubles with. I'd love to see her team up with Petrova :hearts: But it probably won't happen..

Oct 9th, 2006, 04:39 PM
:D I really liked Ai's blog last week

It will be interesting to see her play Doubles at Hasselt with her choice, we still don't know who plays qualifying even yet, it hasn't been released so there could be a name there Ai could team up with. But Sugi and Petrova would be great :yeah: Hopefully I can see her when I go

Oct 10th, 2006, 06:53 PM
I hope it's one of your fave players though, it's fun to watch two faves play dubs together, live ^^

Oct 14th, 2006, 04:28 PM
Ai is playing in Zurich! Here is her part of the draw

(1)Amélie Mauresmo (FRA) vs bye
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs Qualifier
Marion Bartoli (FRA) vs Ai Sugiyama (JPN)
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) vs (6)Patty Schnyder (SUI)

A tough but winable match to start and then Patty or Dani. Good luck Ai!

Oct 14th, 2006, 09:17 PM
I like her draw. Any part of the draw would be tough but she has an awesome record against Bartoli and plays weel against both Patty and Daniela.

Oct 15th, 2006, 04:47 AM
I like it too :) I just hope she wins a round, maybe two, I'll be happy for her!

lots of doubles points to defend

Oct 15th, 2006, 05:20 AM

she's been playing pretty well recently
she can cause bartoli some problems ....
lots of ball back

They need this win if they have any hope for Madrid!!

Good luck against Dani tomorrow, Ai!! A Tier I QF would be :hearts:

Bad loss against Daniela
I hope she doesn't lose the form she had in Seoul and Beijing

the season must be tiring her

Linz, Tier II draw:
First round versus... Mary Pierce  These two have a history, and I hope Ai can pull it out but I love Mary so much!

Still in Zurich doubles :) Beat Yan/Zheng 6-4 6-4 :bounce: Now I hope they can beat Blubbs, because it'll put them in contention for the YEC. If they lose today they'll need to win Linz just to get to spot #4
So today's really important!

Hantuyama lost to Blubbs 4-6 6-1 6-7(3)

It's just so disappointing to lose SUCH a close match, ya know? It was so important for both teams, too... Blubbs now qualify for Madrid, and Hantuyama's chances for Madrid have lowered significantly: They need to WIN Linz and have Peschke-Schiavone lose first round to qualify for Madrid. That's a tall order, you know, a REALLY tall order...

It's just a disappointing result. They fought, they fought hard, but in the end fighting just wasn't enough.

I love Hantuyama, I do, I just wish they were more consistent... Huge victory of Yan-Zheng and then a huge loss to Blubbs.

I've got Australia on my mind...

I have been watching her match against Daniela and it seems she's tweaked her service motion...anyone else see that? Her stance and use of her knees is different. She was serving pretty well.

Ai lost against Pierce in Linz in two tiebreakers...
Poor Ai

Hantuyama won 6-4 6-0, three matches away from qualifying for YEC.
That is, hoping that Fran/Kveta lose first round, or else all hopes are abolished.

They didn't qualify and Ai suffered a disappointing loss to Pierce. I really think Ai shouold have taken this match on form...plus now Ai has a bad streak going in tiebreaks here...or atleast a bad record recently...

No qualifying  Dani also got injured in her singles match, lost cause

I hope Hasselt is more promising :) Unseeded though, so I hope she won't draw a big name in R1 :sobbing:

1.round: AI SUGIYAMA - Vera Zvonareva (RUS)

Shity draw... Vera is playing very well, I doubt Ai can pull this one out.
Still best of luck AI :worship:

Hope is the best policy!! ;)

Honestly, I hope she does well here in Hasselt, but unfortunately she got this draw.

Nadia might pull out though, and Ai is next to be seeded, so wouldn't she move into a seeded position??

regardless, Vera's good, but she gets frustrated easy... and Ai is the kind of player that can frustrate Vera, I think? I think Ai has a shot... I hope so :):)

Schnyder withdrew, Ai is seeded and takes Schiavone's spot in the draw, will play Nat Dechy instead :)
But in Kim's section of the draw :tape:

I hope Ai can finish off 2006 on top - with a title ;)

Nataly plays good, but I think AI will take her out in two!!!

C'mon precious!!!!!

Very nice match vs Dechy :D I really look forward to watching it :)

Unfortunately my Camera has broken so unless I can find a new camera tomorrow, I doubt I will be able to take pictures of Sugi

Her draw has changed dramatically - and for the good! :D :D
She now has Daniilidou, Dechy, Shaugnessy, two qualifiers and injured Bovina and Schiavone. I think she has a great draw to the semis, where she will probably face Ivanovic.

Oct 29th, 2006, 05:50 PM
Aaaah hopefully a revenge match vs Eleni :armed:

Oct 30th, 2006, 08:14 PM
Hopefully she gets revenge on Eleni :armed:
I hope you get to watch her, -sugi- :):) It's fun to watch your fave play live (when they win )

It is a good draw to the semifinals, I hope she can deliver :) and who knows, she might be able to do something against Ivanovic... ^^

Anything can happen in this, the last event of 2006!

(PS: Funny she didn't play doubles... the draw was so weak, she could have played with anyone and made it far :tape:)

I got a new camera :yippee: So I can take photos and it is quite a good one with a big optical lens  So hopefully I can take some good pictures

I REALLY hope I can get there in time for the start of the match, but I have to negotiate my way to Brussels International Train station via the busy metro system to get to the Train Station topick up my friend at 9:30, then we need to make our way back to my house and I am hopeless in metro stations then we need the ride to Hasselt which is just over an hour. I should get there in time but I am scared for it :scared: And I want good front seats  And I may do something I have never done in my life, cheer out loudly for Ai

Its a shame she isn't playing doubles, my dream team would have been Sugi and Yuliana :hearts:

Fedakama :hearts: That's hawt!

I hope the match is good !! I hope you watch it LOL
I didn't cheer out loud lots cause her camp looked at me weird
When she had two SP against Kuzny in Montreal, and she lost one, I said "one more pt sugi!!" and her coach/trainer/w/e looked at me so weird for a minute!! It was so funny

I hope it's fun :)

Well, Ai lost. She was up 6-0, 2-0 and then Daniilidou, who I have lost much respect for, called a medical timeout and started playing better and Ai lost 6-0, 3-6, 4-6...she had many chances in the last set. She shouldn't lose often to Daniilidou...bad loss. Her fall after Seoul has been miserable. Bad draws but even worse results because they were in her hands at many points. Hope she comes back strong early next year, but this can't be a good feeling finishing the season like this.

(Hope Daniilidou gets embarrassed in the next round)

Oct 31st, 2006, 07:15 PM
I hope she has a good start next year, unlike 2005-2006.
I hope she continues to fight... I think she feels the pressure, you know, being the "favorite" in matches.

225 posts about Ai this year, we're good aren't we?? :) See you all in 2007 guys!! :)

Very disapointed. I entered the match at 5-0 and Ai increased to a 60 20 lead then the crowd started cheering for Eleni, there were bad line calls for Ai and she fell apart, I couldn't stand to watch much longer so unfortunately I left :(

Aww
Poor Ai... I hope this isn't a turning point for her
I hope 2007 will be greater than any of her past years :)

Sucks you had to watch her lose, though, -sugi- That's never any fun.
