View Full Version : YEC! The defense of the crown II

morningglory
Nov 5th, 2005, 07:45 AM
Well... 2005 hasn't been that great for Maria, and YEC's her last chance to redeem it. Once the draw has been released, post it here...

I know it's kinda early, but hey, it's her next tourny, and the last of the year, and also the biggest title she's holding too.... along with a truckload of points

GO MARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bounce:

It's next week, doesn't seem early to me lol!

Anyway, should be tough, I hope Maria can play, stay healthy and does her best!

Question marks surrounding Maria's defence of her title
Is she fit enough to play?
If she's fit enough does has she had enough match practice prior to the Championship?

I like this tournament, its like tennis' version of the UEFA Champions League, where only the best players compete

I think this year has been pretty good for Maria. Ofcourse it's not as good as last year, and the last couple of months have been pretty much downhill. But that just gives more reason to hope that she will end the season on a high note and defend her title in L.A. I think she has a good chance to do it too. Maria is known to play well in big tournaments.

I too hope, more than anything, that she stays healthy and is able to perform her best. With all the problems she's had lately, it's always a concern. It would be great if she could begin her holidays and preparations for next season's challenges without any worries.

Best of Luck Maria! :)

COME ON MARIA - DEFEND YOUR TITLE!

Well, she's probably not going to defend her title, she hasn't got enough match practice and has been struggling with injuries, but you never know with maria.

wish her all the best though!

Maria's first match will be against Patty on Tuesday

Tuesday, November 8, 2005
STAPLES Center (from 18.00hrs)
1. Clijsters vs. Pierce
2. Sharapova vs. Schnyder (NB 19.30hrs)
3. Davenport vs. Petrova

Maria's in the Red Group along with Lindsay, Nadia and Patty.

Andy.
Nov 7th, 2005, 03:20 AM
Well Schnyder will be tough they are one a piece head to head both winning the match on their favourite surface. Masha will have to come out playing well and better then she has of late, her fighting spirit will be needed as well im sure she will want to really win her first match and get some confidence back. Good luck Masha

If Nadia does not end up winning the YEC, well then go Maria  . Hope she does well  .

morningglory

THe result today doesn't really matter, though... well it does matter, but even if MAria loses to Lindsay if she beats Nadia then she's through. So the key match is Nadia and Maria's match. That said, If Maria beats Lindsay Nadia will have to beat Patty and Maria then we'll have to look at the number of sets. If Nadia loses to Patty.... oh well.... Maria will have to lose both matches to count the number of sets.

So LEt's hope for a Maria victory and that Patty beats Nadia

Man, I SO want Masha to beat Lindsay!!!:(

Of course, even if she does we'll be hearing the inevitable "Lindsay tanked the match 'cause she's in the SF already" posts. But Maria really needs a great win to restore her confidence and this would go a long way to doing just that.

I try not to let the opponents' fans affect my feelings about Maria's wins and losses - but those annoying "6-0, 6-0 ass-beating" jerks need to be silenced!:fiery:

And if Maria can beat Lindsay TWICE!!!...

I think it was the wiser decision not to try too hard in the Nadia match. Nadia had nothing to lose and it was her last match. The last thing Maria wanted was an epic three hour marathon for no purpose, just 15 or 16 hours before her Semi with Momo.

Maria now needs to get back her focus and energy for the real battle - against Momo.

Maria just lost 7-6 6-3.
What makes it even more heartbreaking was that she was serving for the first set at 5-3 30-0. Then her forehand really did fall to pieces, and her first serve was around 80mph. Maybe fatigue kicked in, or an injury?

Unfortunately it has been revealed that Maria suffered a reoccurance of the Pectoral Muscle injury :(

Just found this article http://xtramsn.co.nz/sport/0,,12048-5015736,00.html

Towards the end of the set, Sharapova's right pectoral muscle injury began acting up again and she was never the same after that.

Sharapova fought off a set point at 5-6 when Mauresmo missed an easy forehand return, but in the tiebreaker, the Russia's forehand completely broke down as she committed five forehand unforced errors.

Sharapova double faulted to lose the tiebreaker 7-1.

While the Russian briefly made a charge in the second set, Mauresmo dictated play while Sharapova flailed on her groundstrokes.

She won the contest when Sharapova erred on an easy backhand.

"Its tough when you are not 100 percent. It's really difficult to play when the injury keeps coming back," said Sharapova, who committed 39 unforced errors in the match.

"The tiebreaker was a big give-away. From then on, it was downhill."

***
Hopefully during the off season, she gets a decent amount of rest and time away from tennis to get rid of this injury.

Get better soon Maria!

I was so hoping that would not have been the case.

The last I heard she wasn't even sure what was causing it. Is there something in her technique? Can it be fixed? Well I'm sure everybody is doing the best they can. It's just sad that she has to struggle with injuries so often at such a young age.

It makes me want to cry, how many times these things come in the way of us seeing what damage the real Maria can do when she is fit!

Please Maria, get better!

Go Maria!

DAMN IT...that injury will not go away :sobbing:
This is sad and very annoying...just what Masha doesnt need at this stage in her career...please rest up Masha for as long as possible before 2006

Well Maria has about 5 weeks now to recover if she wasnt playing in Asia she would have even more rest. I really hope she pulls out of that event.

Unfortunately that is one very short off season. I would've liked to have seen Maria get at least 2 months off.

Hey guys! so bad luck for us today huh? I actually had to watch a movie to get my mind off that very big disappointment. Her injury must have really flared up again. I mean why was she serving so weak in the second set? it was disturbing...I'm still highly disappointed in her thught. The injury is one thing but her fighting spirit has really deserted her at times during her last few matches. One of the best things about her was how she fought for every point. Today, it wasnt like that especially in the second set. If things dont go her way, she instantly gets down on herself. Its really sad to see. Oh well sorry im just kinda pissed. She reall could have pulled that first set out and to throw away such a lead. Anyway, I'm just glad Mary is in so at least I have someone to cheer for tomorrow...And hopefully Maria sorts her problems out before the AO. This pec injury is just ruining things for her. Hopefully it is not as serious as it seems and that she can recover completely from it...I wouldnt want her career to go to waste just because of it...m gosh just thinking abt that saddens me...anyway, I wish her better luck in 2006...And may our being fans of hers pay off big time in 2006! hahaha...

oh and can anyone confirm to me what people in GM are saying abt that choking gesture maria did? i saw her laughing sarcastically which I honestly found annoying considering she was losing...but did she really do that choking gesture? that seems kinda mean though if ever...

I have never seen that much negative body language from Maria, beginning when she was 2 or 3 games ahead in the first set. She knew something was going wrong, and seemed more frustrated than I have seen her before.

If the injury flares up again in Australia, there will be a big window of opportunity to rest befor the French open.

I really didn't interpret it as a choking gesture, she was just celebrating an insane point the she won. And for me, she was addressing it to the public, like "See, I'm done, I lose this match but I gave you this point to make this match worth your money!"

And the laughing in the seventh game of the second set, it was just because she was hitting lucky shot after lucky shot while Amelie was a little bit nervous serving for the match.

Seriously, from the second game of the second set, anyone could read on Maria's face that she had no hope left to pull out the match. She was close to burst into tears. Then she just decided in the three last games to take things positively and enjoy the last games of her horrible 2005 season. I don't think she's an idiot to think that she could still win that match. Amelie's was just awesome and way too much for the Maria who was there.

I agree

and this is for the people that think that Maria doesn't fight anymore!: How would you feel if the same injury would come back and back and back, and it would effect your game, I would be close to tears also! It's not fair to talk about mental toughness when your playing below your normal level of play!

Even though she won a Tier I and II and defended her Birmingham title, she even got to number one, it doesn't change the fact that this wasn't the best year for Maria, because of this stupid injury!

I really hope you recover for next year Maria!

So sad to see Maria like that. At 5-2, winning the YEC looked such a possiblity. Even at 5-2 down in the 2nd set, i hoped Mauresmo would bottle it but Masha couldnt continue to just hit the ball in the court.

I really do hope Maria cancels her Japan trip, to just concentrate on getting 100% fit, and having a great christmas at her home.

Well it was certainly not the Maria we've used to see. Especially not in the semifinal stage of an important tournament. I think it was either laugh or cry for her. She must have felt so disappointed. I think she was just trying to make the best out of a bad situation. The crowd really cheered for her when she tried to fight back and made some great shots. :)

About the GM and choking gesture. All I can say is that you don't have to take my word for it but don't take theirs either. From all I could see, the girls didn't have any problems what so ever with eachother. Maria was in a bit funny mood, but in no way was she being disrespectful. Quite the contrary, from what both of the players said about eachothers, I can only see respect.
Even if someone in the GM managed to look the other way in the end, I for one did see a warm handshake with a smile. I think Maria knew after the first set that it was a lost cause, and it was all about Amelie to close it out. She seemed to have a tough time with it at one point which seemed to amuse Maria maybe because she's been there herself and knows that it's hard to finish a match, but Amelie did it in the end. Anyway, this incident seems to have gotten way more attention than it should have. IMO.

With this, I'm off for a bit of rest too along with Maria and all the other players.

See ya all next season. Let it be a better year for all of us, and especially a healthy year for our Masha. :) :wavey:

I hope she rests up really well in the off season. I'm just gutted about the way she lost that match. It looked like she had nothing left to give

Oh well.

She is in great need of a rest. She'll be back to her best - we've seen glimpses of that in this tournament. Next year will be fine.

I only got to see a full replay of the SF just last night.....are the Eurosport commentators stupid or something?? Maria starts looking down on herself and holding her arm, stretching it etc then makes 5 consecutive FH errors before double faulting, at about half her normal serve speed, to drop the tiebreak....and they cant seem to work out what the problem is. Still by the end of the match they have no idea....while Maria's been serving in the 70's for the whole set. Where have they been for the last 5 months?? :p

Plus I finally saw the 'incident' that caused the 10 page abuse thread in the GM :spit: :haha: what a joke that was. BTW that FH DTL to hold serve for 3-5 was awesome :worship:
