Hopefully there will be an improvement on the last tournament she played (Moscow). A good performance here and she will be brimming with confidence leading up to the YEC. :)

Difficult one to call that. Possible quarter against Nicole, and possible semi final against Amelie. Who knows though...plenty of room for surprise.

Not a good draw, Stosur could be tough, she gets many balls back, but since Maria beat her 4 times before she should win that, but Nicole, I don't know, she has been on an amazing winning streak, her confidence must be so high, should Maria actually get to the SF, she could face a lot of different players, but neither of those seem difficult, but first things first, I hope Maria can play healthy!

Good Luck Maria!

haha funny...but seriously, (copying my post on the tournament thread) why does Lindsay get to have the easiest draw??! ugh! so not fair...

Ohmygosh I can only wish Maria Sharapova all the luck in the world! hopefully she's close to 100% or 100% healed from her pec injury. I dont want her to have a tough time out there and hopefully she gets to the finals to face Davenport. But I'm scared...she hasnt been playing well and nicole's in her draw! nicole beating her would probably be the worst because of the criticisms and comparisons that could come maria's way should that happen. But I gotta have faith...so ohmygosh good luck Maria! prove that you are still the best youngster in the WTA!

This is a really tough draw for Masha. Stosur has taken her to 3 sets in the past and will come into the net a lot as well as having that brilliant serve. Nicole is on fire at the moment and will be hungry for more, Amelie on the other hand has not been in good form of late so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Good luck Masha.

Maria will be pretty keen to return to a bit of form here. She'll also enjoy the chance to play Nicole if she can. The GM is already warming up for this one but if Maria is 100% she wont lose her perfect record against younger players without a one hell of a fight.

Go Masha :yeah:

This is yet another dissapointment, this whole second half of the year has been a dissaster. I hope she will be Ok for the YEC this year could not end any quicker.

Yea this is no good :(
She injured the thumb during training apparently...maybe she fell or something.
The YEC will be even tougher now with so little oncourt preparation but I wouldnt be writing Masha off

I hope Maria is just taking precautions here, and isn't that injured. The Philly draw looked very tough this year, with all the top players trying to qualify for the YEC. So it wasn't really the quiet warm-up Maria would have hoped for before the YEC. Hopefully she's just decided to give herself more recuperation time before the main event. She doesn't really want to have an exhausting battle in a lesser tourney with the same people she is going to meet next week.

I'm sure Maria will want to fight hard to defend her YEC title. So hopefully she'll be fit enough to do so. Get well quickly, Maria!

Gaah !! I fear a withdrawal from the YEC now...

I doubt this injury will bother her anymore at the YEC, but the lack of competitive matches might. I too was really looking forward to Maria playing here and doing well because it would have been a great preparation for the final hurdle of the season, but sometimes it goes like this. She had to pull out last year too at the semifinal stage and then went on to win in L.A., so you never know. :)
The main thing is that she gets healthy and can soon begin her well deserved vacation.
Get well soon Masha!

And then she can just give it everything she has!

Its just like last year when Maria was under an injury cloud going into the YEC. She definitely has it in her to come out and play really well.

Hopefully Masha will be fit for the YEC.

ADVANTA CHAMPIONSHIPS (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; indoor hard; WTA Tier II)
=====================

Maria pulled out of this tournament on Tuesday with a right-thumb sprain sustained recently during off-court training. At least it's not a recurrence of her pectoral-muscle strain.

"I am extremely disappointed to have to withdraw from the Advanta Championships because of a right-thumb sprain. I was hoping that it would be better by now, but unfortunately I am not yet able to play.

"The Advanta Championships is a great event, and Philadelphia has some of the world's best tennis-fans. I am concentrating on getting healthy, and plan on defending my WTA Tour Championships title next week in Los Angeles."

I wish Maria a speedy recovery, as failure to defend that title could see her ranking drop to #4 - and that's before we even consider the points that current #5 Mary Pierce could gain with a good run at the Championships.
