I was so worried when Sybille led 3-1 in the third, but my Nadia pulled thru! Sybille you are an awesome player, I wish you all the best for the future. But I must say...please work on your vollying, there would not be a worse player in the top 500 who vollys as bad as you do:sad: But apart from that, you remind me very much of a Jill Craybas type player;).

yes,an amazing week for sybille!! :bounce: but mana,in all respect, your "volley-argument"is a bit over the board!surely, she can still work on it,but its not THAT bad.and you have to see, that she had some pain on her belly-muscles,which may have had some effect on her game..but then still to fight through, even nearly grabbing the match,is a very, very brave effort, which deserves praise!!thats why i was a bit disappointed with the german commentator, whose only words after the match were:"that was not too great, she will have big problems to get into the top 50"....i think, a bit more respect for that effort would not have been out of place...
but hey,she will go her way,for sure!and i will have a close eye on her from now on,for sure!

OK, Sybille was exhausted - as it can be seen on the scorelines of set number two and three. Emilie is a tricky players maybe she worked with the power of Sybille's hits. Nevermind, take a short timeout and visit the alligator-farms in Florida with your lovely daughter and your partner. ;)

Sybille Bammer's Player Blog

AMELIA ISLAND, FL, USA - It has been a spectacular beginning to the season for Austria's Sybille Bammer. In February she claimed her first career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title at Pattaya City and in March she made an even bigger splash at Indian Wells, reaching a Tier I semifinal for the first time. What's more is that she is the only woman this year to own a victory over Serena Williams. Now is your chance to get to know Bammer a little better, as she writes the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Player Blog straight from Amelia Island.

Monday, April 2, 2007

Hello, everyone! I'm really looking forward to my week here in Amelia Island and writing this blog. It's not the first time I've written a blog. I wrote a diary for a website in Austria for half a year, but I stopped because I just wasn't enjoying it. It was a lot of work but they also put it up exactly how I wrote it, so it wasn't very good; I am not a very good writer! But I have a feeling this one will be better, and I look forward to letting my fans know a bit more about my life on the Tour.

Indian Wells was such a great tournament for me. I was so happy I played that well there; I was playing just like I do in practice and it was a big step in the right direction, a huge confidence boost. My best memory was my match with Tatiana Golovin; it was my first win on a big stadium court so I was really happy about it. I think what has been working really well lately is that I'm using being a lefty more to my advantage; I'm playing the lefty game with angles on the forehand then following with down-the-lines, and mixing it up with topspin and flat shots as well. Anyway, I had a really good week in Indian Wells.

I was getting lots of questions in Indian Wells on what it's like travelling with a child and being a professional player at the same time. Everyone wanted to know about it. It's great. My boyfriend stopped his work to come to tournaments with me. When I'm practicing he is looking after my daughter, Tina; when I'm done playing we will do it together but for now it's working. Tina is a great supporter, she watches all my matches; but it is not always easy! Sometimes she just wants to have other kids around to play with so they have to do something with her during matches. We have this big bag filled with just toys; there's one game in there that's helping her learn some new English words, but one thing she always loves to play is Uno, the card game. It always works!

This is my second time in Amelia Island. Last year I lost first round but already this year I'm in the second round as I won my first match today. I was really happy with the win over Tamarine Tanasugarn; it was a tough match, and my first of the year on clay. We had a lot of close games. I was happy with some of the forehand angles I was hitting. This is a very nice tournament - a big club, enough courts to practice, and lots of places to relax. There's a beach too.

I lost early in Miami so I had a little bit more time to prepare for this tournament. On clay things are much different, so that's important. Normally hardcourts are my favorite but I grew up on clay so I should have some fun this week too!

Right now it's about 7pm... I think tonight we will just go back to the hotel, play some games with Tina and go to sleep early. In the morning we'll go to the beach perhaps and play with Tina. I'm practicing in the early afternoon.

I'll talk to you afterwards!

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

So I did have an early night last night. After doing the blog we had dinner at the tennis club restaurant, then went to sleep around 10pm. The restaurant was really good. I had fish and vegetables and Tina had some spaghetti with tomato sauce and chicken tenders. She doesn't like burgers or fries, which is unusual for kids! She also likes fruits and vegetables, and of course sweets. Her favorite is chocolate, especially the milk chocolate you can find in Austria.

We slept in this morning then had a relaxed breakfast, and because it was just a wonderful day today we went to the beach. Tina found shark teeth; she yelled out to us, "I found teeth from a shark!" At first we didn't believe it but she was right, that's what it was. She gave them to me and said I'm not allowed to lose them, so I have to keep an eye on them. We went swimming a bit but the waves were so strong that Tina fell over. I had to keep an eye on her too!

I had my practice early in the afternoon and it was very good. We practiced an hour and a half, working on everything from the lefty angles I talked about in yesterday's entry as well as my net game. A lot of my drills are working on me coming into net after a rally. During this time Tina was also having a lesson! There was a coach giving a lesson on the next court, and they asked her if she wanted to play so of course she did it. She was with them for about an hour. I didn't see it, but my boyfriend Christophe said when she was done she came off the court and said, "The practice was so hard I'm powered out!" After practice I went for a 20-minute run and then did some stretching.

We then went back to the hotel and relaxed for a bit. I was playing Polly Pocket with Tina. We watch movies sometimes but most of the time we watch some of the sports on TV, such as basketball, soccer, golf, and of course tennis if it's on. Actually, right now Tina is watching Spongebob Squarepants.

Yesterday I talked about how important Indian Wells was for me but I have also had some other great moments so far this year, the most important one being my win over Serena Williams in Hobart. It gave me a lot of confidence, and when I beat her I knew I could beat anyone if I played as well as I did that day. I'm trying to play like I did then, just being calm and focused on every point.

The title in Pattaya City was also really big for me. When I got there my back was injured and I thought I wouldn't be able to play, but I was so happy I was able to play and eventually win it. The final against Gisela Dulko was a close, very tough match; she had three match points. I just believed in my game.

But this is a new week and I have my second round tomorrow against Virginie Razzano. It's going to be a tough one. I want to have fun and play my game but I know I'll have to be concentrated on every point too and give it my best. I've only played her one time before at Linz in 2005 and I won; that was a big win for me, in my hometown, and with my fans, friends and family there to cheer me on. But tomorrow is a new match. I think both of us are better players now.

I'll talk to you all tomorrow!

Sybille

like everybody thought ;)

Hello again everyone!

I'm happy to say I won my second round match against Virginie Razzano. I'm getting more and more used to playing on clay again, and I definitely played better than I did in my first match. My movement and sliding are getting better, I'm hitting the ball deeper and was making her run as well. When I first played her, two years ago, it was a different match. I think I'm a better player now.

Today was a busy day. After we had breakfast at the hotel, my coach and I went to the courts for warm-up and practice, until about 11am. I was supposed to play after Li and Sprem and they finished quickly, so our timing was perfect.

At about 2pm, after I finished my match, we practiced for another 40 minutes or so, then I went for a short run, stretched and showered. Lunch was after that and then I went to an autograph session, which was really fun. It was relaxed, easy and not even that long. I like meeting my fans, especially the shy ones, because I am also a little bit shy and so I know how they feel! Tina came along and a few times they would ask if she could be in the picture too. She also took a photo of me, which I have included in today's blog. Isabelle from the WTA let her use her camera for it. I think it is a pretty good picture!

We all went back to the hotel around 4pm and I did some laundry by myself. Then we all went to play mini-golf, which is only a few minutes from the hotel. We went to that park on Monday as well. It was a close round; Christophe won and my coach was just one shot behind him, and I was two behind him. Tina really wanted to play and liked it a lot. On a few holes she did better than me even! After that, we went to Appleby's for dinner. I had chicken parmesan; Tina had chicken fingers, of course!

Tomorrow I am playing Karolina Sprem, who beat Li Na. They both have similar game styles - hitting the ball very hard and fast. Sprem was in the Top 20, and Li is in the Top 20 right now; but Sprem did great today, she must be playing well. I lost to her twice a few years ago but one of those was pretty close, and I think I've improved since then, so hopefully I'll do better. I'll give everything to win.

Another early night tonight, probably. We'll probably read Sleeping Beauty to Tina tonight before I get some sleep for tomorrow.

Talk to you all then!

Thursday, April 6, 2007

I'm happy with my performance today against Karolina Sprem. I won, 62 63, and I'm now in the quarterfinals. She was hitting it very hard and we didn't have so many long rallies but that was good for me as I like playing against that style. I was hitting some very good wide serves on the deuce side in the first set, some aces. I held serve at the start of the second set and had a few break points to go up 2-0 but then lost my focus and had to come back from 3-1 in the second set.

I'm used to being behind in sets and coming back to win them because I try to be a big fighter in my matches. I admire Thomas Muster, who was No.1 in the men's and was from Austria; he won so many matches and was an unbelievable fighter. Although I don't think of him during my matches, I've always tried to be a fighter just like him. I think it helps too that my ranking is getting better and better, so I have more confidence and believe in myself a lot more even when I'm down.

After the match we went out and practiced for an hour, then the normal routine of running then stretching too, and today I also had a sauna. I had lunch at around 3:30pm, and then we went back to the hotel. When we got back I actually played some more tennis - with Tina! There are courts next to the hotel and she wanted to play so of course I did. She was playing well, too. She is already hitting her forehand really well, and her backhand is getting better and better. She's doing very well for five and a half years old!

We went to dinner tonight again, but this time to a restaurant on the beach. I had chicken caesar salad and Tina had pasta with tomato sauce - not chicken fingers again! We just got back now from dinner actually. We're looking at some of the pictures she was drawing during my match today. She usually draws or writes while I'm playing. During my last match she wrote "I love you mom, I hope you win" and in today's match she wrote "Mom I love you very much". It's really nice!

It's getting really quiet around the tournament site now that we're later in the week and lots of the players have left, some to go to Charleston already. The practice courts aren't anywhere near as busy. We are friends with some of the other players, German players such as Julia Schruff but also others like Eva Birnerova. Sometimes we get lunch or dinner with them, and we play some golf with them too. Tina likes them and they like her too, so it works out well. But none of them are here anymore so we're just keeping in our team now.

My next match is against Hantuchova or Cibulkova, they're playing now. I don't know so much about Cibulkova; I have read her name a few times but that's all, so my coach is on the court watching that match and will tell me about it when he gets back. I played Hantuchova once, in Stuttgart last year, and I lost in three sets. She's in great form, winning Indian Wells. She'll be a really tough match. But I'll give my best whoever it is and keep fighting. I'll try everything to win!

I'll talk to you all tomorrow afterwards.

Friday, April 6, 2007

Well I won my quarterfinal against Daniela Hantuchova today, 26 62 62, and I'm very happy about it. In the beginning I was a little nervous and didn't play well; I made lots of unforced errors and she was playing great. But after I lost the first set, I really started to play my game and it worked well. In the second and third set I was playing more like a clay court player, being aggressive but also using angles and getting a lot of balls back.

Before Indian Wells I had never beaten a Top 20 player, but this is my third Top 20 win. I'm doing better and better against the best players. I'm more relaxed and believe in myself more. In today's match I fought really hard, just like I talked about yesterday, and because of that I made her hit a lot more balls than her previous opponents I think. I tried to get as many balls back as I could, trying to get them really deep in the court, and so she had to start the point over again. When we played half a year ago I don't think I played as well and I still had my chances, so today I was confident I could do better.

I'm also thrilled because this is my first clay court semifinal on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Actually, this was the first time I even made the quarterfinals on clay! Before Indian Wells I got to play on clay in Acapulco; I thought going there would help me prepare for the clay court season. Unfortunately, I didn't move so well in that tournament and lost against a qualifier in the first round. But she was playing really well and I think I was sliding too much!

I spent most of my day at the tournament today. We slept in, had breakfast then played with Tina in the hotel (a card game called Black Pepper in English) and drew some pictures. After that Tina was watching a movie and Christophe stayed there, and me and my coach went to the courts at 11am to warm up. I had lunch over there, and the match between Golovin and Venus was so quick I had to prepare right away to play my match! Even though she lost, I think Venus, as well as Serena, will be in the top again pretty soon. Serena has won every match so far this year except the one I won, and Venus has been playing well too, so I think they'll both be high.

After my match, we went and hit some more balls. I like practicing as much as possible, even after I've finished a match. I like working really hard at my game. I've improved a lot in the last year and I don't want to stop. Anyway, after that I did some running, stretching, went to the whirlpool, went to physio (I've been feeling something in my elbow) and then my press conference. We grabbed dinner at the tournament then came back here, and that brings me to the blog!

I play the winner of Petrova and Safina in the semifinals tomorrow. They're both very good players and have similar games, so I'll just go on court and have fun, and give my best. I will do everything I can to win. We'll see what happens...

I'll talk to you all afterwards!

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/library/200x250/bammer%2007ai%20friblog%20200.jpg

Saturday, April 7, 2007

Well, I lost my semifinal match against Nadia Petrova today. I don't think either of us played upto our level, but the first set was close and we both fought well. I was a little bit nervous. I didn't sleep very well last night. It's still new to me to be in the semis of such a big tournament so I think I was a bit too excited to sleep well. I couldn't find my game but I kept fighting and tried everything. In the first set I was down 4-1 but came back to 4-4; usually in a match you can change the momentum and find your way like that, and I gave my best, but she was just better today. I wish her good luck in the final, it should be a good one!

Normally I don't do so well during the clay court season, so I'm very happy I had such a good start here in Amelia Island. I found some of my best form on clay, and feel good with my sliding. Tonight we'll go out to dinner like the last few days, and maybe have a bit of a celebration afterwards. We leave for Charleston after breakfast tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to playing well there too.

I thought I'd tell you all one more funny thing Tina did, as this is my last day for the blog. This morning at around 9am Tina was telling us we had to hurry to get the car because she didn't want to miss the match - but my match was second on after 1pm. We had so much time! It was really funny.

I really enjoyed writing the blog this week - it was much more fun than the one I mentioned earlier this week, the one I wrote for the Austrian website! It was easy for me. I hope you all enjoyed it. I really appreciate all the support from my fans and I look forward to doing it all again soon!

Until next time,

Sybille

Although she was unlucky (lost direction in the 3rd, unfortunately)I was pleased to watch her and to find out that she's a fine and decent sportswoman.

Congrats by the way for entering the top 20 - she will made the top 15 this year without any doubt. :)

I didn't see the match, but this is hardly surprising that she defeated Sveta, she is a more consistent player & way smarter than the Russian. I didn't know that it was her first top 10 win though.

Even though I like Vera, I hope Sybille will sneak into SF :). Good luck!

wtatour.com always describes Sybille as 'the popular austrian' and I've seen her in person before and there were quite a few fans shouting their support the whole match and she was really friendly with them.

So why doesn't she seem to have that many fans on wtaworld? I would have though Sybille had her own forum by now?

Finally a good win for Sybille, with her old-fashioned game she managed to beat Chakvetadze 64 57 62 in Los Angeles. :yeah: As she gives no rhythm, she really is a tough cookie for the Russian. I really hope that she takes the most of her draw now, there is simply nobody of top 20 remaining in the bottom half :tape:. And this is Tier II :help::lol:.
