View Full Version : Maria 'forgot' the ones who helped her?

I ran across another tennis site (juniortennis) and one of the posters there, who trains with a former coach of Maria, said about Maria, I rephrase,

"It's not all about Bolletieri. Maria came to the States when she was 7yrs old, they had $500 and thats it; no job, clothes, house, nothing. They went to Sekou Bangoura for training, the Sharapov's lived with Sekou until Yuri found a job. Sekou gave them food, clothes and a job. Maria trained with Sekou till she was 12 yrs old, she also went to train at Bolletieri's at age 9. But up till she was 12, Sharapova went to Bolletieri only a few days a week, she was also going to Kevin Quay for practice matches.
The fact is Maria forgot who helped the most and only talks about famous people. If it wasn't for Sekou then Maria wouldn't have a shirt on her back.

Oh, yeah, and during practice Maria never grunts, she uses it to intimidate her opponent during matches"

I never heard of these people. At least it's not in the Maria story after she won Wimbledon. Any thoughts on this poster's comment?

Fascinating, truly.... If it is true.. sure I think Maria should have thanked them, if she and Yuri lived with him for that long... But we must remember, no doubt there is a huge list of people with the same involvement in Maria's career.. therefore it is hard to mention all... However, regardless, it is a interesting post.. thanks for quoting it here.. :)

About the grunting, well.... i am on maria's side on this one.. i think it is a natural process.. besides, if it is not... it is a good tactic.. And it add's to the exciting audible atmosphere of tennis matches...

Actually, I never heard or read Maria in person talk about Bolletierri or Lansdorp. She doesn't even talk much about her Dad except when journalists ask her questions about him.

The thing is that all the media input we have about Maria (except from her interviews) are what her agent, IMG, wants to let us know and it is notorious that Bolletierri is closely connected to IMG. It's not really Maria who says "Bolletierri here, Bolletierri there..." etc. That's purely business issues.

That being said, must we take for granted what this alleged trainee of a former Sharapova's coach writes in an internet forum? If yes, will we blindly rely on what that former coach says?

About the grunts, there may be a part of truth, because even in match play, Maria forgets them. But as a matter of fact, most of the time she plays her best tennis when she grunts. Lately, it seemed to me that she tries to get rid of them or at least to make them softer.

This is Eisenbud from the Forbes article -

Then came two difficult years of knocking around. Maria can't recall details but says she and her dad made the Florida tennis scene, where she got sporadic instruction and he found ways to pay the bills. "You can never get a real straight answer from either of them," says Max Eisenbud, Maria's main handler at IMG, who speaks with her daily. "Yuri calls it survival. It was just two very tough years. They don't forget what it was like."

So whatever happened, they didn't have a good time.

Yea as mentioned before Maria would have a list as long as her arm of people that have helped her and being young in the initial years she may not have seen things the same way others do. You can bet if it was important then Yuri and Maria would appreciate it for sure.

And it's possible Maria didn't create her perfume

Takasago Formulates Maria Sharapova

Takasago perfumer Carlos Vinals has developed a self-titled fragrance for tennis star Maria Sharapova. The perfume, sold by Parlux Fragrance, has notes of mandarin, bergamont, pomegranate leaf, cassis berries, lemongrass, gardenia, jasmine, magnolia, English rose petals, Wimbledon grass, cashmere musk, white amber crystals and vanilla. The new scent bows September 1 at Macy’s.

Thanks for your comments and opinions!

It was probably a hard time for them.

By the way, you always hear the stories of people who succeed. There are thousands more who try and don't succeed because of bad luck, no talent, meeting the wrong people etc. And when people do get famous and rich then everyone who has ever shared the same space with this person acts like they've known them for years. The name dropping is very annoying.

I am however also suspicious of IMG. They are very good in making small stories big. They also told the story of Kournikova, her dad had to sell the tv to get her a tennisracket. That story was used over and over again by IMG to emphasize the struggle and poverty of the now succesful tennisplayer.

I am a little suspicious of this internet story. Maria and Yuri living with Sekou Bangoura isn't part of the official Maria story, but it may have happened for a brief time. I can't find any official connection between him and Maria - but he coached Venus and Serena for a period, and he has an academy in Bradenton.

The official story is that Maria and Yuri arrived in Bradenton when she was seven, and that Yuri found a flat and did odd - jobs while Maria stayed on her own at Bollittieri's academy, living in the dorms with older girls for two years until her mother came over. But there is also a story of Yuri ferrying Maria to the academy on a motorbike, not being able to afford a helmet. So perhaps before Maria was admitted to the academy as a boarder, she did live with Yuri somewhere - and Mr Bangoura could be involved.

Whatever happened. There seems to be no record of his officially training Maria. For some reason he is not mentioned - perhaps there was a quarrel. Or perhaps his role wasn't as big as this poster believes.

This one's easier to quash.

When Maria "designed" her perfume, it doesn't mean she gathered the ingredients and put all the chemicals together. What she more likely did was describe the sort of smell she liked and then sniff various mixtures and concoctions presented to her, picking the ones she liked or suggesting a bit more of this or that.

The perfumiers would have put together the final product.

There's no way Maria's dad paid for 2 years at the IMG Academy by working odd jobs.
There is no official story.

Very useful comment Queen Maria, not really.
If you're not interested in the topic then why post anything?

There is no official story. Maria got a scholarship from Nick. Just like Sesil did. I don't think it was a full boarding scholarship at first, but she was seen by some of the IMG guys, somewhat later, and she was given full funding

Hey - lay off of Summon, will you! ;)

I agree with her comment of "whatever" because it is really impossible for us to know the real truth of this matter. There have been many stories of Maria's early years and one thing we do know is that Maria should not be held accountable for things that happened when she was a little girl, too young to understand the circumstances of her living conditions. The thing she seems to remember the most is missing her mother.

I agree with Xan about Maria's input into making her perfume. I'm sure she helped choose the different ingredients but she is not a professional perfumologist or whatever they're known as.
