Yes she says it's fine. The week off was cautionary so not to inflict any more pain on it.

I would say a well deserved loss for the USA.

Who wants to bet that JEnnifer's dismissal from the team probably had something to do with her relationship with Seles.

I think so.

wow, well done Barbara - she always boosts her game up against the top names, and is a real stubborn fighter aswell, congratulations.

things could be a bit tight now with Meghann Shaughnessy trying to keep them alive now in the singles, considering her recent poor form.

This is a shocking result, especially that 6-2.

BLAME GAME STARTING NOW...

BJK : A TOTAL BIATCH

How dare she just throw away a match like this... so what if Seles had lose, we know Capriati would win and the tie would be equal 1-1. Now we are on life support.. that Maghann is in a huge slump.. US goes down 3-2

When you are representing a country (and BJK is) you do what is best for the country. Letting your ego get in the way is very bad. It is not like Jen did anything BAD..she wanted to practice more. BJK picked jen for the team and should have been big enough to bend the rules to let Jen practice. They know each other well enough to have prevented this.

jabauer
Apr 27th, 2002, 07:50 PM
Good Grief people.. even if the USA is swept 5-0 it doesn't negate the fact that Jennifer broke the rules and the consequence has to be paid. Who gives a shit as long as captain BJK can look at herself in the mirror the next day.

Quit basing your opinions on the fact of whether they win or lose.. either you play fair and by the rules or you don't play!

I am so sad for Monica, what is wrong Monica recently? she is just reminding me of early 2001 when she lose to low rank players like Garbin etc. She is in a slump. Only a few weeks ago she hold match point against Capriati!!!

This is a real slap in the face for US, they will win doubles and Monica will beat Fauth for sure, but how about the other match against Schwartz? She beat Venus on clay before now Monica.

I will laugh my head off if US go 3-2 down tomorrow LOL

Apr 27th, 2002, 07:55 PM
Whose rule is it that you cant practice unless with the team?

BJK´s?
USTA´s?
ITF/Fed Cup´s?

And what constitutes practising? Are you allowed to put a fresh grip on your racket in your own time, or does that have to be supervised?

TheBoiledEgg
Apr 27th, 2002, 07:58 PM
Had ITF used Davis Cup rules , Monica wouldn't be allowed to play as she has already played for Yugoslavia. Once a player plays for a country they cannot change.

that rule should have been made in Fed Cup as well but it was dropped when Martina Navratilova defected.

Schwartz will win tomorrow.

big pressure on Meghann, she didnt expect to play now she carries the burden of the nation and BJK's job.

TheBoiledEgg
Apr 27th, 2002, 08:00 PM
Jen didn't break any rules

she wanted to practice more but that was not in BJK's code of ethics.

no rules from ITF state you cannot practice more or outside team.

Maybe your right. Bending the rules sometimes gets people in trouble later on. (though I do distinguish between a law, and a rule). Do you think maybe this rule out to be changed? I wonder if the Davis cup has any rule like that. I can't see it...but maybe I am wrong.

As a parent...I bend the rules sometimes. My kids get to stay up a little past their bed time on a special occassion.

jabauer

yes.. it may be a stupid rule.. but, that doesn't mean that rules can be changed on the fly.. that would command zero respect. Obviously there are reasons for this rule and we have to realize that we are not privvy to the hows and whys.. but I would be willing to bet that any high profile player that isn't forced to follow these types of rules would never bond with the team mates etc.

DBowik
Apr 27th, 2002, 08:12 PM
Again, I disagree. I change and bend rules everyday in my professional and personal life. If an employee comes to me and wants to talk about a rule they feel should be changed temporarily or permanently, I listen, and together we make a decision. My willingness to listen and compromise is what makes me an mature, fair, and successfull adult, boss and professional.

that's gray area.. this is black and white.. capriati has been there all week for team practice.. what possible reason could she have for wanting to deviate... was it just for the sake of the deviation?? That would be my guess. And again.. we know that Capriati is anything but graceful.. sooooo, if she was trying to get a favor from BJK chances are the request was riddled with words that would even make the most avid swearer cringe.

I don't want to stay and work overtime even though that was part of the original agreement.. you ask why?? she say's none of your F****** business.. I shouldn't have to stay if I don't want.. what would you do... ?? Would you say.. ok, lets talk about it or would you take offense to her notorious mouth and tell her to hit the road?

Sele's 7-6 (7), 6-2, loss to Austria's Barbara Schwartz in their Fed Cup match at

Ah ha..now we agree. In this case what we have is personalities conflicting and that is what caused the problem!

I am not as quick as you to concude the blame lies with one person (I am more inclined to split the blame) , but that's where our independent opinions come into effect, and we are both entitled to those!

I only answer because I enjoy an intelligent discussion and I don't find many of those on the board here...thanks!

Good question (about my employee)...

First of all, I wouldn't have hired anyone that would attack me verbally. Or certainly wouldn't keep them in my employ for long.(I don't mind swearing...but swearing is different than attacking)

If my employee was a good employee and didn't want to work overtime for one day...I would not argue..not worth the headache.

But what if an employee came to me and asked to work extra hours that my budget couldn't accomodate? I would look at my entire business...would I be better off without the employee...or would I cut back on my budget somewhere else to accomodate this employee? It depends how valuable the employee was..that is a decision I would make at that time.

Thanks for answering my question TBE, next one: (haven´t got time to go through all todays posts about this, and I´m sure its already been asked)

Why did the USA have to forfeit the second match? I know in Davis Cup they can switch players up to half an hour before the match. Is that possible in this instance?

jabauer
Apr 27th, 2002, 08:42 PM
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I understand where you are coming from and would agree if we lived in a perfect world and could make exception at our whim. You know as well as I do whether it be with employees or any other type of subordinate situation that it cannot happen. Once sombebody sees another breaking the rules or receiving special treatment all credibility is shot.

Sometimes we have to make tough choices to keep things uniform.. because (cliche coming) there is no 'I' in team.

TheBoiledEgg
Apr 27th, 2002, 08:42 PM
they had to forfeit as the draw had been done, and thats that
Davis cup is same on day 1.

had it been sunday's matches then they could changed without this trouble.

Capriati did not even HAVE the practice session, she told BJK about wanting to do it and BJK said no and Jennifer did not agree and BJK dismissed her. How is she allowed to break rules, oh whatever, if you people are going to bitch and gripe about the issues at least get the facts straight. This whole thing is stupid..........................

BAD KARMA! Like it or not this was about arrogance -- and most of it lies with BJK. Apparently, Stefano Capriati was around too much and this ruffled Billie's feathers because her position as coach was being usurped. Secondly, she was also arrogrant thinking this was an easy win. Even before Jennifer was "dismissed" for wanting to practice more (Jennifer is not known for wanting to practice more -- this showed great desire on her part. Also, how much preparation for the French would there be considering this was being played on Green Clay -- she was dedicated to the team), Billie's attitude in the press conferences was as if USA had this won already. Even when Jenn was axed, she did it thinking -- arrograntly -- that the USA would win. Jenn probably is laughing her ass off -- and she should. USA and Billie deserves this for the arrogance they present.
