Kremlin Cup organizers keep wild cards for Russians

17:29|05/ 10/ 2005

MOSCOW, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Organizers of the Kremlin Cup 2005 international tennis tournament, set in Moscow for October 8-16, said they would award wild cards for the tournament to Russians, despite bids from foreign players.

The Russian Tennis Federation president and the tournament's Board of Directors Chairman Shamil Tarpishchev said organizers had proffered awarding wild cards for men's singles to Dmity Tursunov and Teimuraz Gabashvily, rather than to Australian Mark Phillipousis and Spain's Alberto Costa.

Yevgenia Linetskaya was also awarded a wild card for women's singles. Two wild cards, one for men's and one for women's singles, have yet to be awarded, Tarpishchev said.

Top tennis players will participate in the women's tournament, including Mariya Sharapova, ranked first in the world by the Women's Tennis Association, Tarpishchev said, adding that the tournament sought out more stars from men's tennis it would have had to pay extra for them.

"We gave up buying players since we decided the tournament is competitive as it is," he said. The total prize fund for the ladies' tournament is $1.3 million, whereas $1 million is on offer for the men.

The WTA one is Gold / Silver Exempt only right? I thought the tournament directors can give it to whoever they want, as long as that player is Gold / Silver exempt

thats down to WTA, they hold that WC right, and can give it back to the directors if there are no options for Gold/Silver.

Maria Kirilenko has asked for the 2nd WC ;)

Good for Kirilenko, although I suppose with Sharapova's injury problems they wouldn't take a wildcard into doubles together anyway...

Great for Linetskaya too...

why doesn't moscow want to trade for a couple of wcs to the 75K in Zagreb :p

Mary Pierce could ask for the Wta Wild card cause she's not sure to have enought points to go LA !

But nothing is sure, even Mary is probably not really sure of what's the best to do !

Pierce should not even think about going there.. Russian media will be all over her for US Open incident and Russian public will boo her to death..

I think Mary can handle it, even a showdown with Elena ;)

Besides, the stands at the Kremlin Cup are usually very empty so even if they all booed Mary it may not be that loud :p

I wouldn't be so sure she doesn't
have enough pts. to get to LA.

Patty Schnyder occupies the #8 position.
Mary occupies the #5 position and holds
and over 400pt. lead and Schnyder is
doing much of anything.

She competed in 22 tournaments and has like
4 or so left but their's no reason to think she's
gonna do much in those remaining tournaments.

So long as Mary maybe plays one more tournament between
now and then and does all right she should be just fine.
So, she doesn't need to come to Moscow.

When Elena would have played Mary, and that would be a weekend -there will 17000-strong crowd over there with Davis Cup athmosphere..

Russian public will boo her :haha: :haha: Once again who will boo her   I'm sure Pierce woudn't play on the center court because on the CC we have in 99,99% russian players. CC is very, very empty every year so imagine what's going on when no russian players have been playing on other courts

Maggie Maleeva wanted a WC there since it's her last year and her last time in Moscow at her favourite event being a three-time champ. It seems that she won't get it though.

The chances of Linetska reaching the main draw based on ranking are quite good, as Linetska was on ranking #40 when the list came out and that is only a couple places away from direct entry.

So between that and the WTA gold exempt spot, which is likely to be unclaimed, i think Maggie will receive the WC.

Given that the Russian initials for USSR are CCCP, which also "stands for" Criminally Controlled Crazy Player, the Peppermint Patsy should definitely play here!
