no belgium:(

My opinion is this:

There are 7 flags on that Graphic... the 7 teams that were in the main draw last year. I think the 5 with no ?? are into the Hopman Cup (Slovakia, USA, Russia, Australia and Italy), whilst Germany and Argentina are either not playing or they are teasing us by making us wonder, but they will play (I hope it is the latter because of ALG :)).

Now, say Germany and Argentina are NOT playing, this leaves 4 vacancies (one of which could be for Belgium), or if they ARE playing there are 2 vacancies (the qualifiers probably).

Now, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong totally. But if this is the case, then I say the Cup will be:

POSSIBILITY 1 - WITH NO GERMANY AND ARGENTINA
Australia
USA
Slovakia
Italy
Russia
(all confirmed)
Belgium
France

QUALIFIERS
Serbia and Montenegro (also supposedly confirmed)
Netherlands

POSSIBILITY 2 - WITH GERMANY AND ARGENTINA
Australia
USA
Slovakia
Italy
Russia
(all confirmed)
Germany
Argentina

QUALIFIERS
Serbia and Montenegro (also supposedly confirmed)
France

Where the fuck is Serbia stop giving me heart attacks here, i thought someone had the REAL draw, and I dont wonna see Serbia having to qualify, they are too good for qualifying and I wonna see as many matches of Ivanovic as possible, I mean i'm sure she and Novak can beat the people in the play-offs no metter who they are, BUT imagine if Novak has a bad day foe instance or if his constant sickness and breathing problem persisits they could lose in the playoffs and i would never seen Ana again, I HAVE NEVER SEEN her play on TV and I'm her biggest fan ( i did see her live tough - only 1 match) so I wonna see as much as possible of Ana and I dont want them to lose in the play-offs.

I think Serbia will be in qualifying. When Kim was Ana's age and top 20 she had to qualify, last year France were going to have to qualify, there have been strong teams in quallies before & there are 7 flags so probably leaving off the qualifying countries.

I wouldn't be surprised if Belgium doesn't play or at least if Kim doesn't play, why would she want to be in Australia for a full month & away from her family & boyfriend for new years. But if she does play this week, I think it might be Hong Kong as it is on the way down from Europe & as Sharapova isn't going to be there they have some more $$$ to spread around.

From that picture though my interpretatoin would be Germany & Argentina aren't going to be there assuming the others are, because if they are there that gives the exact field of last year, how many times has that happened, you'd think they would want to bring a few new faces. But then as Argentina were in the final, you'd think they'd be invited back.

Guys the image means nothing its just a stupid photo aimed at promoting the event, I mean its not like they'll have the same countries again.

Also, SCG should not be in the play-off because last year German and Argentinian players were all out of top 20 except for Coria, Italy had also weak rankings, in the Previous year Czech Republic was in the main draw and both players had poor ranking like 50+ or something, i just hope we arent in the qualifying i cant trust Novak, I think ana should play both rubbers womens and mens. lol

~|Naomi|~
Oct 1st, 2005, 11:35 AM
When the Czech Republic played Novak was way higher than 50, & they played the year before and did pretty good 2nd in their group so that helped them get in as well. Argentina had Gisela at 30ish and Coria top 10. Germany were in the md cause of Haas, his ranking wasn't the best but he has a very good best ranking and it only dropped as far as it did cause of injury. Schiavone would have been at least top 25 last year no? And they had previously played through quallies a couple of years ago, they didn't deserve to be put in quallies again. Ana is worthy of the md but it is a team's event, so it isn't just based on her, obviously it will depend on the strength of the md as to whether they get straight in or quallify, but based on who they have had in quallies before I wouldn't be surprised if they are in quallies & if they are the team they will play will more than likely be very weak, so I wouldn't worry about them not winning.

As for them not having the same countries well that is what I said. I wouldn't just take it as a stupid photo, if the countries aren't confirmed why are their flags on the photo promoting the event saying when the teams will be announced? While others have question marks, false advertising if they don't get announced.

Fantastic

They won't make Netherlands play qualifying again... They've never made a country play qualifying twice in a row if they won through qualifying the previous year.

If the Serbs play qualifying, it will be against a weak team to ensure that Ivanovic's stay in Perth is worthwhile. There's no way they'd make a good player sulk around for a week on the off chance that they might get a game.

The only top player that they've made to do that was Ai Sugiyama and that was because she asked to play both times and both times Japan was not able to qualify against quality opposition (Tanasugarn, Clijsters, Rochus, Srichaphan).

Erm, anyway, I don't think that picture indicates anything. Why would it? The announcement is suppoed to be a big surprise. Why go to all that trouble to conceal the competing nations only to reveal it on an advertisement for the announcement date. Silly.

exacly thats what i've been on about as much as I like Dulko, Gronefeld, Misa even the COOL Schiovonne I dont think they will invite the SAME countries, I mean they not gonna just do a repeat of last year

I mean these countries are 110% in SVK- defending champs, Russsia, US and the host country Australia and ofcourse Serbia - cos we heard it from the horses mouth ana and novak have both said they're invited ;) , but i dont think the others that underperformed will get a second go again, may be next year, I mean i have been following HC for a while now and they never had the same peole over and over again - except for Slovak Republic - i think it should be called The Slovakia Cup

Germany are a good chance to be invited back. They were on the verge of making the final until Tommy Haas injured himself in their last match. I'd be surprised if they weren't given another chance. Anna-Lena Groenefeld has also improved times 10 since January, so she could have more of an impact in the singles this time around.

I didn't know Russia was a definite. I didn't know the US was a definite either. I've only heard about Slovak Republic, Australia and Serbia-Montenegro. The US are quite weak at the moment (mostly because of unavailable or reluctant players). They could stand to miss a year and give other countries a shot.

I think Argentina & Germany deserve to get invited back based on last years performance. They usually invite the countries that did well back and drop those that don't;)

I'd be surprised if Italy get invited back. Russia haven't done well, but as a country they are strong so won't be surprised if they are there.

Anyway we will just have to wait and see:)

WHAT !!! you have a friend that's a friend with Nadal, thats cool. I wish Spain was invited - but I cannot think of a HOT spanish girls atm :p , it would be so funny to see Vives play mixed with nadal  but it will probably be Garrigues :)

Russia being the most powerfull country in womens tennis is bound to be invited as probably the second seed. but we'll see on Tuesday :p

Recent history has shown the organisers don't like to make many changes. Last year for example, no new country was invited that had never played.

Serbia haven't played for ages, so that's one change, and I reckon one more might be the maximum.

Russia have to be invited. They have the greatest depth in women's tennis, and providing Safin is fit or Davydenko is willing, they are certainties. I also feel USA are.

Matthias - I agree. Anna-Lena must be invited, and her and Tommy will give that a real shake. It's hard to see Anna-Lena getting beaten in doubles, then only her OR Tommy needs to win the singles.

Senorita - welcome fellow West Australian... and also, Nadal would be awesome, possibly with Medina Garrigues?

It would be great to see Nadal in Perth. The organizers started making a list of players they wanted back in June. Sharapova and Nadal were at the top of the list. Obviously, the Sharapova idea was dropped when she committed to Gold Coast. Sharapova was being enlisted to play this year but Myskina, as the top Russian woman at the time, thwarted that plan when she accepted her first priority invitation.

It would be interesting to watch Nadal play mixed doubles. If they can get Medina Garrigues to partner him, it should be exciting. She's improved a lot as a doubles player and he has given doubles a good crack, having played with Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez, most notably, in Davis Cup. I would expect them to be seeded second behind a Russian team.

Due to them pursuing Sharapova, the quest was also on to secure the services of Safin. He was approached first, apparently, from what I read in the paper. He has loved playing in Perth the last couple of years and he'd be a fool to change his routine after successive Australian Open final appearances. Since Sharapova declined the invitation, I'd expect the organizers to ask Myskina again. Although she and Safin haven't teamed well together in mixed doubles, she's the only one I can picture saying yes to an invitation. She's a bigger star than Dementieva and Petrova in Russia, and especially in Perth. She also loves playing for Russia.

Slovaks, Aussies, Russians, Germans, Spaniards, Serbians and maybe Argentines. If any of those speculations come true, then it's shaping up to be a good Hopman Cup. :)

To sadly confirm what Danker said:
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will play at the season-opening 400,000-dollar ATP Chennai Open in January, organizers said on Friday.

The teenage sensation confirmed his participation this week in the 11th edition of India's only ATP event to be held on the Nungambakkam stadium hard courts in the southern city of Chennai from January 2-8.

So now that he is out of Hopman... we need to consider other teams.

Regarding the Russian female player, an alternative to Myskina in my opinion is Svetlana Kuznetsova. She is great friends with Alicia Molik, and assuming Alicia plays, that MAY be a drawcard for her... but I agree, it will probably be Myskina.

Please, please invite Germany - I would :hearts: to see Anna-Lena again, along with Misa Krajicek.

Ivanovic - great try with the email, but by the sounds of it, it will be revealed on the 11th, but not on the website until the 12th. But from memory, they said that last year and it came on the website early.

I just emailed a travel agent involved with the Cup to see if they know any players playing, doubt it, but it's worth a try.

I think the organizers are more likely to go with Venus, given Serena's poor form this year. Or they might feel sorry for Serena and ask her back to make up for her 2004 no-show. :p

Nah, come on, it's Venus' turn anyway. She's ranked higher than Serena. :)

First of all I'd kill myself if Ana Ivanovic didn't show up :p

then if they invite the following players I also may consider suicide
Maouresmo - France , Justine - Belgium, Conchita Martinez- Spain, Patty Schnyder- Switzerland :( :p

Not surprising since Chennai clashes with HC anyway...

FROM FOXSPORTS.COM.AU

Serena Williams, plagued by injury for much of the year, has withdrawn from her remaining two 2005 WTA Tour events to focus on getting healthy for 2006, the WTA Tour announced overnight.

"My doctors and trainers have advised me that my leg needs to fully recover order for me to play at the level I'm accustomed to playing," Williams said in a statement. "This has been such a disappointing year for me because I'm such a competitive person and I like to win for myself and my fans."

She had been scheduled to finish her year competing in tournaments in Zurich and Philadelphia.

Don't hold out for such a brilliant line-up this year, guys. Usually, a few big names are mentioned before the draw is even done. Call it intuition and not wanting to be too disappointed if I'm correct. This year, only the defending champions have been officially announced.

But I don't think it could be any weaker on the big names than last year though, that was pretty weak. They called it the battle of the dome or something or other and all:o I think it'll be stronger than last year just because I expect the US to be stronger:p

2) HOPEFULLY NOT: I am reading too much into this, and we will have to wait until Wednesday.

Does anyone else think it is wierd that they are announcing it today but aren't going to put it on their site till tomorrow, you'd think they'd want the field known asap. Also wouldn't you think if they were having some kind of announcement the media would get hold of the field and the players and so it would be available in the media before it is on the tournament site? Also if they are having an announcement/launch of some sort you'd think it'd make the news, Sydney did the other day.

Marat and Kuznetsova, no Anastasia:sad: I guess she hasn't done well in the past and wouldn't have been number 1 in Russia at the time they picked the teams. Also she said last year she doubted she'd spend a month in Australia again.

Just cause there are one or two good teams, doesn't mean it is a great line up. Overall it is weak in comparison to what they have previously attracted. There is nothing wrong with repetition.
There are no top 10 women's players.
There is 1 top 10 male player (Gaudio is 11 so he may be top 10 by the time of the event)
There is one good thing about it though, apart from Russia the field is evenly matched and should be competitive from that aspect to see who makes the final, but then you would make that argument if they were all ranked between 80 and 90 it'd be competitive between them. I'm sure McNamee would have wanted a few 'big names' hence why he went after Serena.

Kuznetsova, Molik, Dulko, Groenefeld, Ivanovic are all in Top 30... add to that Misa, one of the world's best upcoming players... and that's 6 out of 9 top notch... apologies to the other 3, although I am sure they all all good to watch as well.

I will admit the men's side is a bit light on... but no absolute plonker of a player (don't know who China will get though)... so even though there is no superstar.

Don't be too quick to judge Peng Sun. When the HC first started, Paul McNamee chose a little-known Japanese boy named Yasufumi Yamamoto to play for Japan. Everyone thought he was going to be a shit player but turned out to be a really fantastic player. He lacked experience on the ATP Tour but took Top 10 player, Karel Novacek, to the brink of defeat, holding two match points. It was later revealed that the Japanese men tend not to travel too far out of Japan to play because the Japanese men have their very own lucrative domestic tennis circuit.

Paul McNamee doesn't just choose any old nobody for the sake of it. The players he chooses usually have the talent to be in the competition, otherwise they wouldn't be invited to play in the first place.

That said, I like a lot of players this year! Marat Safin, Nicolas Kiefer, Gaston Gaudio, Max Mirnyi - I think I'm going to die and go to heaven! I have been waiting YEARS for Nico to play! Finally! I am so going this year. :)

Out of the women, I'm looking forward to seeing Ana Ivanovic, Shuai Peng and Victoria Azarenka. I can't believe they asked Vika to play! And she doesn't need to qualify either! How sucky for the Dutch having to play qualifying AGAIN.
I can't believe they scored Taylor Dent! He has a shitload of Adelaide points to defend. I wonder why the Slovaks pulled out? Hrbaty even talked about wearing his peek-a-boo shirt in Perth. What a kidder. Oh, word is that Serena Williams was down to play but pulled out last week, leaving the spot open for Lisa Raymond. The USA were going to be seeded 2 until Serena's withdrawal.

Wouldn't be awful if they seeded Russia to meet Australia in the same group? Alicia vs Sveta! Hard to believe it now but Sveta was the No. 2 Russian at the US Open behind Maria Sharapova.

I'm kind of perplexed as to why Belarus escaped playing qualifying. Max's ranking isn't so high that it would lift Vika's ranking into the main draw. The Dutch, I thought, having already played and qualified last year, deserve a direct spot in the main draw.

I guess they view Belarus this year as being like Czech Republic two years ago when Jiri Novak played with Barbora Strycova. The similarities between the teams are striking. Strycova and Azarenka were/are the No. 1 junior girls, and Mirnyi and Novak are good singles players who happen to also be top doubles players. Novak was something of a doubles specialist until he decided to focus full-time on his singles. Same with Mirnyi, except that Max is still king of the mountain in doubles as well as maintaining a decent singles ranking.

But I still don't agree with the Dutch having to play qualifying again. They've never made a team that's qualified the year before, play the qualifying tie again. If I were the Dutch, I'd be a tiny bit bitter about that decision. I could understand it if the team were made up of two new Dutch players, but they're not. It just feels wrong.

Usually they add the rankings together and see which teams have the higher ranking. DUring the AO there is no way in hell Belarus would have had the higher ranking. I think Vika was ranked like in the 300s then, so
