The Fortis Championships of Luxembourg is the largest of the events. Last year Silvia Farina Elia took the title by beating Shinobu Asagoe in the final. Who will win this year?

Playing your perhaps last tournament surely does something with the general vote. Magdalena Maleeva announced at the US Open that she was going to play three indoor tournaments before she retired and the public sure heard it. The Bulgarian verteran, who won Zurich last year, defeated Daniela Hantuchova in an epic battle in the previous round. She now plays Nathalie Dechy, an ex top ten player.

Another soon to be retired player is title defender Silvia Farina Elia. The Italian won the title here last year over Australian Open winner Shinobu Asagoe and accomplished another great victory in the second round, where she denied Anna-Lena Grönefeld access to her third quarterfinal in as many weeks. The 8th seed now comes across Nadia Petrova, who has yet to win a title in PYW.

Also still among us is PYW #1 Kim Clijsters. The first seed dismissed Klara Koukalova quite easily (has it been any different lately?) and has to take on compatriot Kirsten Flipkens. The Belgian is the only qualifier left after the losses of Gajdosova, Pastikova and Krajicek.

Patty Schnyder was the one responsible for Krajicek's loss. The Swiss ousted the Dutchwoman in a third set tiebreak, much to dismay of some hardcore PYW fans. But as we all know, Patty isn't one to care. The third seed takes on Dinara Safina in the quarters.
