Great job Maria, what a great first title! Maria's closest match was against Jamea Jackson in round 1 (7-5, 7-5) very telling about Jamea's potential! ALG, your first title will definitely come soon!

I just don't know what to say. Really... this completely caught me by surprise.. it's been rough times for me but it's paid back completely. I'm so happy I don't even know how to show it.

Finally she didn't choke big time under press pressure.
Finally she kept confident a whole week.
Finally she got a title. :D And a big one.

I'm really pleased for her, but lets not get too carried away. Sharapova was injured, Davenport withdrew as did Venus. Serena is way out of shape.

A good week definitely but would like to see her beating Top 10 players - or even getting close - before thinking she had really broken through. Her game seems way too one dimensional and lightweight to me - basing this on her defeat at the US Open recently.

Her game seems way too one dimensional and lightweight to me.

Leightweight yes probably, but not one dimensional. Even Eurosport commentators said today that she has every shot from the book. ALG was th one who looked one dimensional today with her bang-bang strategy.

Good win for Kirilenko.
Btw who said that Adidas outfits can't look good :;):

One dimensional?!?!?!

She is one of the few girls without a one dimensional game. She's got an all court game and moves to the net effortlessly and naturally. It's so much fun to watch.

The problem is that her game is too "lightweight" as you put it. She tends to get blown away by the big hitters.

Maria is the third Russian teen to win a Tier II or better in 2005

http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/apphoto/BEJ11009251350.jpg

Russia's Maria Kirilenko poses with her trophy after winning over Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld during the women's singles finals of the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing, China, Sunday, Sept 25, 2005. Kirilenko won the final, 6-3, 6-4.

and to the person basing their theories of maria k. on the us open -- you're a moron, that was one of the worst matches she ever played, making errors on every first shot she hit. blame the windy conditions or stadium, but this week is more typical of how she normally plays. :bounce:

MK looked very impressive today. She went into the match with a big-Masha type scowl and was right down to business. She produces a good serve and groundstrokes for a smaller player, and hit accurate shots to the lines from everywhere on court, coming to net quite a bit, and winning most of the rallies.

She didn't celebrate much when she won though.

ALG on the other hand was disappointing. She was tentative, couldn't keep the ball in on rallies, and managed to lose her serve 4 times in a row! :o

MK certainly has a future.

Congrats to Maria Kirilenko. She has a nice all court game. I also like the fact that she takes the ball early, she kinda reminded me of Hingis today but with power and serve. I wonder though if she can keep this up. Daniela won her title at Indian Wells and has had it rough, I hope she can go another direction. Although Daniela is playing great tennis.

Maria K has a good on-court personality, she is quiet and charming.

Maria K has a good on-court personality, she is quiet and charming.

Well, her reaction after she won was quite non-charming for me. When shaking hands she didn't even look to ALG who said sth like "Good match" to her but she didn't even care. It was like Maria just lost and not that she's the winner...my first reaction was: "what a coky attitude" but maybe she was just not realizing that the won  Whatever, dunno, found that a little bit disturbing but very classy from Anna-Lena though

Figure it out for yourself idiot. If anything you should have said what is with the Maria K and Hingis comparison, but your'e not really a tennis fan just one of those people who watch to see their favorite play the game. I bet if Hingis never played tennis you would not be interested in the game now. Your'e not a true tennis fan.:) :tape:

Um I've been like, actually playing the damn sport since was before Hingis was ever on TV :wavey: But you're right, I certainly wouldn't be such a fan of women's tennis if it weren't for her :hearts:

And a Hingis/Kirilenko comparison is far more credible than a Dani/Kirilenko comparison in terms of how they play. Hingis and Maria are both swift, undersized players with a good court sense. Dani is a slow power player with nice volleys.
