China has the money to throw together big events...but not sure if tennis is big enough there. They seem to have interest though.

Russia, Spain and Argentina have the players to warrant a grand slam....though that isn't always a valid factor.

Sep 25th, 2005, 05:59 AM
where else? RUSSIA of course :yeah: They've got the most players in the top 50, so they certainly deserve a slam up there!!! :yeah:
If Shamil can somewhat badger their government in giving more money maybe in the future, who knows? Note that the Russians will have to perform better than this year if they want Putin to funnel them some money.... and defending FedCup was a start

I am thinking here in USA.. like in Denver of Salt Lake City... during the winter... and it has to be on ice courts.

Ahem .... I honestly wouldn't want a 5th Slam. But if I had to chose, I'd go with Argentina, Brazil, Russia, China or Japan. Definitely not Africa.

china or japan

Of course it is almost impossible to fit in another GS into the existing calendar.

However, there are quite a bit of time between AO and RG. If you look at the number of Tier Is in this time, you just have to think it is possible if you 1) cancel one of the them and replace with; or 2) upgrade to, a GS.

The best one would either be Indian Wells or Miami - right between the AO and RG. I would pick the slot of Miami

Obvioulsy both are in the US, so by upgrading either one would mean two GS in the country. I don't think anyone but american would agree with the idea.

So first we have to find a city:

1) can't be in the States, Europe (two already!), Australia
2) Sunny and hot in the end of March - South hemp, between the Tropics lines, pref close to the +/- 15 degree
3) fit into the existing schedule - middle eastern countries prior to it and southern States after.
4) Economy & infastructure and the overall reputation of the city.

1) Asia, C./S. America or Africa
2) Beigjing/Shanghai would be nice but a bit too cold in March. Off the top of my head, these cities sort of fit the criteria: Rio, Hong Kong, RSA (what's the weather like in Cape Town??), Bali, somewhere in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Carribeans, India, many many countries in North Africa, Middle East and South America.

However, 3 & 4 eliminate quite a lot of countries. No offense, but would you have a GS in for example Kingston? Jamaica Open or Bombay Championship - just don't ring any bells really.

So rich, developed and true international cities. Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, somewhere in Asia really. Maybe they call it Asian Open, alternating among few countries HK, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand. Like the YEC, Rogers Cup.

Just my $0.02.

How about a slam on the moon? It would give a whole new meaning to the term "moonball"

Sep 25th, 2005, 10:22 AM
Wherever it's going to be, let it be in a different continent from the other four.

Sep 25th, 2005, 12:34 PM

South Africa is a good place :) :)
but there is no good date in year to play 5th GS...

Sep 26th, 2005, 04:21 PM
It would probably be in Japan - Tokyo.

Sep 26th, 2005, 04:25 PM
A 5th major would be great for women's tennis. Then at least 6 events will have a first prize of about $1 million.

There are only 4 slams and that's how it should stay, imo.

If I could choose, here's where I'd put the 15 biggest events on the calendar
GS: Melbourne-Paris-Wimbledon-New York

YEC: USA - probably back at Madison Square Garden. The US is the home of women's pro tennis and the season's finale should be there.

Tier I: China, Japan, South Africa, Brazil/Argentina, Moscow, Rome, Berlin, Toronto, LA, Hilton Head.

I'd have Miami, Indian Wells and Zurich as tier II's the same as Sydney, Eastbourne, Stanford and so on.

While I have nothing but respect for the history of the traditional 4 majors, I think adding a 5th major (provided it's on grass) in South Africa would be wonderful. There's a rich and storied history there, and I think it would be terrific to move forward like that, and even possibly bridge the racial boundary gap in that great country.

I'd choose one of the Asian countries. Japan and China would be the most logical because they have more players represented on the tour.

Sep 27th, 2005, 04:51 PM
I would say somewhere in Asia.

China for example :wavey:
