And could possibly be the worst? :o

I can understand ALG be in the final but Kirilenko should never be in a final of a Tier 2. She's weaponless.

LOL...This year is all about week draws- except for the Slams...

I try to remember these days:

Wimbledon: Venus vs. Lindsay
Stanford: Venus vs. Lindsay
San Diego: Venus vs. Monica
Los Angeles: Serena vs. Lindsay
Montreal: Serena vs. Martina
New Haven: Venus vs. Monica
US Open: Venus vs. Lindsay
Zurich: Martina vs. Lindsay
Moscow: Martina vs. Anna K.
Philadelphia: Martina vs. Lindsay
YEC: Martina vs. Monica
Sydney: Martina vs. Lindsay
Australian: Martina vs. Jennifer
Tokyo: Martina vs. Lindsay
Miami: Venus vs. Jennifer

These are the finals of most of the Tier II or above tournaments from W 00 to Miami 01.

She may not have a big game but you are ignorent if you cant see that she has great talent, she is a terrific athlete has a great all court game and can serve an volley very well and has a lot of variety, its not all about power

Sorry, I have to disagree with you there.
She does have weapons. She can hit big forehands. She is a good mover too.
I'm sure she has others.

I'm sure Sharapova's 2nd serves didn't think she was so weaponless...

Just because the "regular top-players" didnīt make it to the finals, it doesnīt mean itīs weak. I think itīs a huge accomplishment by both finalists that they made it through the draw.

Years ago, people were complaining about the circumstance that itīs always the same players every Sunday and now that it is unpredictable, people complain about the weakness of the finals. The first times the current top players made it to the finals, there were also a lot of people who said those are weak players and look where they are now.

Stop whining and pay some respect for the two women! They deserve it!

Good post Spunky83, a better thread title would be "most unexpected Tier II finalists or lowest ranked"

Well said Spunky and Spikey. :) You 2 should hang out together. ;)

Well said MMF. :)

It will be interesting to see if Makiri's all court style of play to overcome Anna-Lena's major size, power and serve advantages in the Bejiing final. Kirilenko has more natural tennis talent than Groenefeld does. But in women's tennis size and power matters more than talent and Anna-Lena has the size and power to overcome Maria's talent, agility, volleying and shotmaking ability.

P.S. - It's interesting to note that the Kirilenko/Groenefeld Bejiing final was actually scheduled to be a first round match before the schedule was changed.

It might turn out to be an absolute belter of a final. A 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 would be fantastic.

who cares
this is a big chance for both players - both talented - to win the first title
may the best win
in two or more years noone will ask how they won it

I think ALG will be top 15 next year and that she'll win easily tomorrow. Playing dubs with Navratilova has helped her and what Propi said is exactly right. Everyone has to start some place.
Hopefully it's a great final. Just because they're lower ranked doesn't mean it won't be entertaining. I mean plenty of the top players have met and had boring matches ( Kimmy v Momo in Miami for example)

Devilish, you really have it out for smart tactical tennis players don't you.:p

I would guess that this is the weakest Tier 2 final in many years. Usually there is at least one top player, even if the other player is lower ranked. This final has two. Molik was essentially a top player when she won Sydney.

There isn't anything that really comes close.

And for those who say that this tournament represents a breakthrough for Kirilenko and ALG, I disagree......neither one had to defeat a truly great player to make it to the final.

Of the 3 finals this week, this might be the weakest.
But ALG and MK are having their best years, so they might keep improving.

The finalists are partly there due to a superior physical fitness.

That doesn't seem weak to me.

No. ;)

I just think with Maria that her game even though she won Beijing will not be good enough ever.

The BUMP by the way is cos for the 2nd time again this week I was bad-repped from something I posted over a month ago. Thanks AndrewBroad
