Kim had an injury, she strained her medial ligament in her knee in Berlin and retired, then because of that she got a related hip injury.

awww. I didn't read that Sharapova was injured. That makes it not quite so nice for Maria K. I'm happy that she advances, but I wish she had beaten a healthy Maria S.

I hope Sharapova finds the solution to that injury. She's carried it for quite some time now. I'm worried about her having these injuries at such a young age.

If there is a bright side, at least it gives a chance to some of 2nd tier players to break through and get some confidence.

Maybe it is a chance like this Nadia Petrova needs to win a title.
Has any of these 2 won a title yet?

I could be wrong but I don't think there has been a tournament this year where a top player did not have to withdraw before or during the tournament , or retire during a match. Reason: injury.

Great. ALG seem to be promissing player. May be Maria K. will finally join a friend Maria S. in the winner circle, although she still has a long way to go.
Then we would be able to just say Maria, we would have to say Masha and Makiri or Mari S and Maria K
Why didn't Nadia enter :haha: This was her best chance!!!!

I am wondering the same thing. she does not seem to be opportunistic by seeking tournament she has a better chance of winning, although this was far from that?

Major disapointment indeed.

China wanted to raise the profile of this tournament because their long term goal is to steadly increase the quality of rating and eventuakly reach tier I. Then Make it 2 week tournament, and finally push for a 5 th grand slam status. i have watched few interviews where chinese reporters are trying the gage the reception that idea might get in the tennis world.

My mouth dropped (metophorically speaking) when I saw this result coz I couldn't believe that in just a couple of months both my fav players have retired from at least one match. Would she of quit if she wasnt losing by one set and 2-1? I dont think so. If she was unable to play tennis, she shouldnt of played in the first place.

In my eyes she didnt "retire" she got "beaten" by a better player today. Simple as that.

"Even if I couldn't walk I'd want to finish the match," a dejected Sharapova told reporters. "It's something that I can't control. It's a very mysterious injury.

"It was getting worse and worse with every shot."

Sharapova's injury is the same right pectoral muscle strain that forced her out of last month's Los Angeles Open.

"In reality, yes it hurts and it's very painful. I had an MRI in L.A. and they said it was just a muscle problem or inflammation," said the Siberian-born teenager.

"It's kind of up and down and it comes unexpectedly. I took a week and half off to get ready for the U.S. Open and after all that it was still not better so that's a concern."

Injured Sharapova quits during Beijing semifinal
9/24/2005 11:09:00 AM

BEIJING (AP) - Maria Sharapova quit because of a chest injury while trailing in the China Open semifinals Saturday, sending Russia's Maria Kirilenko into the title match against Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Kirilenko, ranked 45th, was ahead 6-4, 2-1 and ``very surprised'' when Sharapova stopped. The decision by the top-ranked Russian prompted boos from the crowd at a tournament beset by injuries.

Sharapova said a muscle on the right side of her chest is inflamed, causing recurring pain. The problem began in Zurich, Switzerland, last October, and she said a switch to heavier balls in that tournament may have been a factor.

The pain ``comes on unexpectedly from day to day,'' she said. ``It's very mysterious.''

Sharapova said her father, also her coach, decided to end the match Saturday.

``I'm very disappointed, obviously,'' she said. ``With every shot, with every forehand and serve I hit, it got worse and worse.''

Groenefeld defeated Poland's Marta Domachowska 7-5, 6-3 in the other semifinal. The big-serving Groenefeld, ranked 30th, won the double's championship in Bali last week. Groenefeld and Kirilenko and will be going for a first WTA singles title.

Sharapova's pullout followed injuries to Serena and Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.

Davenport withdrew before the tournament because of a lower back strain. Venus Williams pulled out before her quarterfinal because of a leg injury. Defending champion Serena Williams lost in the second round to China's Sun Tiantian and attributed her poor play to an ailing leg.

What is wrong with everyone on tour these days!?? :awww: First Lindsay withdraws, then an out-of-shape Serena loses, and now Venus and Maria both pull out. This - if there wasn't one before - is a serious wakeup call for an off season in professional tennis. There are just too many injuries right now, and it's ridiculous that the tour keeps pressuring players to play. Players need time to rest and get healthy, and right now 6 weeks isn't enough.

something i would expect one with no understanding of tactical tennis to say

but anyway -- congrats makiri IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU  :worship: too bad maria with the injury and everything, but no offense i'd much rather see Kirilenko/ALG then Sharapova/ALG which would be a slaughtering. i hope makiri can whip ALGs ass tomorrow :lick:

does anyone know kirilenkos new ranking??

something i would expect a **** to say. :)
a healthy Sharapova wipes the floor with a Kirilenko 10 times out of 10. Maria S is way too good for her.

Bajan bitchslap :haha: Meanwhile, I'm indifferent as far Maria Sharapova is concerned, but even the blindman could see that she wasn't herself out there --- and the other Maria clearly took advantage of it while playing with way less errors. I have the match , I'll upload it in a bit.

P.S. Maria K attempted a drop shot earlier, I bet Miss deja would have cringed

she MUST have been injured. cuz there's no way in hell Kirilenko would take a set off of a healthy Sharapova.
get better soon Mashenka :yeah:

It's not like we need to go much back in time to prove you wrong. :p

Yes she's a great player with a future in the top 10, but she, like, uses her brain on the court and stuff instead of hitting every shot as hard as possible  so she'll never get credit... kind of backwards isn't it?

Yeah I agree. Thankfully I think most fans realise that power doesnt necessarily mean better.

all due respect to JHH (and i mean that) what matches DIDNT she lose a set on clay this year? :p

times JHH lost a set on clay in 05:

Jankovic
Peng
Davenport
Kuznetsova
Benesova
Peschke
Petrova
Martinez
Medina Garrigues
Kuznetsova

10 sets lost in 24 matches. thats how she chose to win her matches this year  the one in bolds you would maybe expect. but do you see why that stat isnt that spectacular? :)

so she has no power yet deserves credit.
oh the irony. or is it hypocrisy? ;)

it's neither ironic, alannis, nor hypocritical; she does indeed have power, but it is without question that those with powerful shots are more hyped than those with soft hands, which is too bad for maria. all one has to do is look at sania mirza; kirilenko will be 10x better than her, but you would never know it listening to the hype machines

i dont think Mirza is all that either so there :ras:
it is without question that those with blonde hair are more hyped than those without. but er. yeah. shes older than my Mashenka but she'll never be as successful. that is all

Nope, thanks to the umpire. :p Before you ask, I don't remember any physical complaint there.
