View Full Version : Why are we fans??

Hi everyone
I think this is the first time I actually post in here..

I know a lot of people who say: I'm her number one fan and stuff like that. Of course everybody has his/her reasons to be a fan, so what are yours??

Are it her looks.. her game or something else?

Good question Almie, and make sure you post more in here too!! :)

Well there are a number of reasons why I support Anna. It all started for me with the way she battled through Wimbledon in 97, it was fantastic to see someone going through the tournament, beating some very good players along the way, and I remember watching some of her matches on the tv, I loved the fighting spirit she showed. I'll admit her looks helped at that time, I mean I was only 13 then, and looks can definitely influence you at that age ;), but even now although I still think she's great looking, that has nothing to do with it, I mean Anna could play with a paper bag over her head, and I'd still support her (yeah I know playing with a paper bag over your head isn't the ideal thing when you play tennis, but you know what I mean!). She has been giving such a tough time from the press, and from so many people, but she is able to cope with that, and I really really admire her for that, because not many people could cope as well as she's done.
Her game is why I support her most of all, she has the sort of game, that sometimes you feel like shouting what the hell are doing, some of her shot selection, some of the matches she loses. But she's the sort of player that always has you on the edge of your seat, because you never know how she's going to play, she can be unpredictable, which is good in a way, but also can be very frustrating!!. There are just so many things to like about Anna and in the last week I'm more hopeful about Anna's game than I've been for a good long while, with getting Harold in as coach, planning to play smaller tournaments, these are good decisions, and hopefully we'll see Anna getting the rewards she deserves. :)
Also I guess I could probably say that supporting Anna is a part of my life, the same like when I'm supporting my football team Hearts, but with Anna, if possible, I try and be on the internet when she's playing a match, because I always have to know how she's doing in a match. I could really go on for hours, why I support Anna, but all of the above things definitely!

Well said martin, I agree with everything you have just said though i must admit I saw her just prior to wimbledon aand it was her looks which initially attracted me but then wimbledon was a big eye opener and she earned my respect!

Do you think celtic and rangers are likely to leave? I think that would be a very bad thing for scottish soccer.

Where do we start, Almie? Looks have something to do with it, I admit, though not in the creepy way that we've experienced with certain posters over on kournikova.com. Her beauty when she's on the court is like that of some magnificent creature, like... I dunno... a cheetah or something.

I find her personality engaging, even that touch of arrogance she has; her exciting, aggressive style of play; her fighting spirit... Yet, she can be very articulate and modest. On and on... She's just magnificent. :bounce:

Martin, the same thing happened to me, it all started during Wimby 97, specially after she defeated Huber, i was overwhelmed by that fighting spirit and the variety in her game at the time, and she was only 17, i remember thinking wow, this girl is up to great success in the future. Then i sort of lost track of her for a year or so until that unforgetable match against Steffi (my fav) at Eastbourne 98, she came back so strong after losing the first set, i was completely impressed and have been following her ever since. I never thought of her looks as the primary reason to become her fan, yes she's beautiful but i like her personality better, the way she handles the press, that agressive style of play like joui said and how she seems to be so down to earth, though she sometimes showed a little arrogance.

The recent decisions she's made are truly encouraging, hopefully better times will come from now on.

I'm a fan *because* Anna is *immensely* talented. She has *so* many shots in repertoire. There *aren't* many players that can say that. I know it's *difficult* with Anna's ups and downs but I *have* faith in Anna! :)

How can you not like her. She's very talented, she has a beautiful smile. It's always nice watching her play. There are people who don't like her but she is very popular. Tournament directors are very happy when she competes in their tournament. They always give her a wild card when she needs one because she attracts the public.

I don't remember the first time I saw her play  but I was a fan immediatly. I think she was only 14 years old when I saw her on tv for the first time. She stunned me by her tennis, I love that kind of tennis, and of course I love her looks too.

I didn't know you were a Anna fan, Almie :D
