So what do you think was the best Grand Slam match of 2005? Because there are only 10 options avaialbe on the poll, obviously some matches, like Henin def. Sharapova FO, Venus def Pierce Wimby, Davenport def Kusnetsova wimby, Davenport def. Clisters Wimby, Venus def. Serena USO, Molik def. Venus AO, are not there.

(1) L.Davenport USA def. (10) A.Molik AUS 6-4 4-6 9-7 Australian Open, Semi-Final.
Infront of her home country, Alicia Molik just come off a big win against 8th seeded Venus Williams. She pushed world number 1 all the way before Davenport finally gets a break at 7-7 to serve out the match. After 2 and a half hours, Davenport moves into the semi-finals.

(7) S.Williams USA def. (4) M.Sharapova RUS 2-6 7-5 8-6 Australian Open, Semi-Final.
Coming back from 3-5 in both sets was a feat itself, however saving three match points whilst doing it is impressive. After a poor start Williams picks up her game and manages to outpower the Russain in the closing seconds of the match. Once again, Williams came back from Match points down in the Australian Open to move into the final.

(1) L.Davenport USA def. (14) K.Clijsters BEL 1-6 7-5 6-3 French Open, 4th Round.
Despite the lower seeding, Clijsters went into the match as the favourite, but even with a 6-1 3-1 lead Davenport was the world number 1, and suprises many coming back to win the second set. Going up a crucial break in the final set cemented her good run on the clay courts of Paris. Something you dont see from Lindsay that often.

(10) J.Henin-Hardenne BEL def. (6) S.Kusnetsova RUS 7-6 4-6 7-5 French Open, 4th Round.
The match lasted over three hours, and once again Kusnetsova was up match point on the eventual winner and couldnt finish it. All credit to Justine, who played amazing to come back and win, and still hasnt lost a match on clay this year. Impressive.

(14) V.Williams USA def. (2) M.Sharapova RUS 7-6(2) 6-1 Wimbledon, Semi-Final.
In ths straight sets victory, the quilty was at a very high level. Both were hitting the ball harder and harder, and trying to overpower on another, however it was Venus who overpowerd the defending champion. At 5-3, Venus had set points in the first set, only for Maria to raise her game and force the tiebreak, however from this point on , Venus was able to make that one extra shot and moved into the final. Was this the match that brought Venus back into the winners circle?

(1) L.Davenport USA def. (3) A.Mauresmo FRA 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-4 Wimbledon, Semi-Final.
The Frenchwoman really turns up the heat when she takes the first set against the world number 1. She break again in the second and looks set to move into the final, but her big match nerves surface and Davenport grabs the second set with some great shots. Davenport takes advantage of the early break, however at 5-3 up the rain comes. The American wins the match to take her through to the final the next day.

(14) V.Williams USA def. (1) L.Davenport USA 4-6 7-6(4) 9-7 Wimbledon, Final.
The 14th seeded Williams found herself down a set and a break at 4-6 5-6. It looked to be over as Lindsay served for the match, but Williams showed her fighting qualities to break and win the tiebreak with some amazing winners. Again in the third set, down 2-4 40-15, she fought back to level it. However, Davenport somehow managed to get a match points, only for Venus to save it with yet another winner. Davenport was so close to victory so many times in the longest Womens final, however Venus was able to pull off the ultimate comeback and win in 2hours and 45 minutes.

(4) K.Clijsters BEL def. (10) V.Williams USA 4-6 7-5 6-1 US Open, Quater-final.
In a very topsy turvy match, the Belgain was able to use her winning ways on the hardcourt to outlast the Wimbledon winner. Clijsters hit only a handful of winners, but won most of her points by drawing the error from Williams. Impressive comeback from 4-6 2-4 down puts the match on this list. Did this match give Clijsters the much needed confidence to go all the way?

(6) E.Dementieva RUS def. (1) L.Davenport USA 6-1 3-6 7-6(6) US Open, Quater-final.
Once again in the final set tiebreak Dementieva come through. Despite coming back from 2-5 in the tiebreak to earn herself a match point, there was nothing that Davenport could do, as Dementieva hit a winner, then dropshot, then winnner to seal the match. Great fighting spirit from Elena.

(4) K.Clijsters BEL def. (1) M.Sharapova RUS 6-2 6-7(2) 6-3 US Open, Semi-final.
Having 6 match points in the second set must have nerved Clijsters a little bit, and then to go on and see Maria save all 6 with blistering winners might have pushed her over the edge. However, credit to Clijsters who hung in there in the final set to move into the final of the US Open, which she would win.

That was some exciting match and a big turning point for Venus in her career, while she demonstrated her impressive comeback in that match! :worship:

Wimbledon final, by some distance. The other matches were good, but the quality, drama and occasion combined was nothing compared to this one.

(1) L.Davenport def. (10) A.Molik 6-4 4-6 9-7 - Australia
I remember watching this match during Exam week :tape:. I thought it was really intense, but it was a big serving battle and it got a little boring to watch.

(7) S.Williams def. (4) M.Sharapova 2-6 7-5 8-6 - Australia
Such a dramatic match, but it definitely wasn't High Quality, except for a few games in the end of the last two sets. What was riveting about this match was that Serena never, ever played very good, yet she was always in it- and the matchpoints she saved her incredible (forehand return winner, forehand winner crosscourt)

(1) L.Davenport def. (15) K.Clijsters 1-6 7-5 6-3 - Paris
I thought this one was a snoozer. Choke-job by Kimmie...

(10) J.Henin-Hardenne def. (6) S.Kusnetsova 7-6 4-6 7-5 - Paris
Didn't see it.

(14) V.Williams def. (2) M.Sharapova 7-6 6-1 - Wimbledon
Probably the Highest-Quality match of the year, IMO. Both players were hitting the ball so, so hard in both the sets and Venus was just running everything down...Really, really dramatic, too.

(1) L.Davenport def. (3) A.Mauresmo 6-7 7-6 6-4 - Wimbledon[B]
Didn't see it.

[b](14) V.Williams def. (1) L.Davenport 4-6 7-6 9-7 - Wimbldon
Wow! What a fight from Venus, coming from behind, saving matchpoints. I think this was the highest-quality match between two top players, this year. At one point, Venus ripped three consecutive winners at 4-6, 5-6 down and I think she had won seven straight points- five of them were winners...

(4) K.Clijsters def. (10) V.Williams 4-6 7-5 6-1 - New York
No way. I'm bitter when it comes to this match. Venus let it go because Kim pushed- like shit coming out of your ass.

(6) E.Dementieva def. (1) L.Davenport 6-1 3-6 7-6 - New York
Highly dramatic. Elena saved that matchpoint with that fierce forehand winner, but Lindsay looked wild...Not the best quality for about the first two and a half sets.

(4) K.Clijsters def. (1) M.Sharapova 6-2 6-7 6-3 - New York
Some great points! Good match, except for the fact that Maria was always trailing and it never seemed like a match until the end of the second set.

IN ORDER:

1. Venus def. Maria @ Wimbledon
2. Venus def. Lindsay @ Wimbledon
3. Kim def. Maria @ US Open
4. Serena def. Maria @ Australian Open
5. Elena def. Lindsay @ US Open
6. Lindsay def. Alicia @ Australian Open
7. Kim def. Venus @ US Open

Didn't see the others.

Venus vs. Lindsay, although the late night/ early morning drama of Serena & Sharapova was pretty good! I dunno why, but it feels more exciting when matches are shown live at 3am

ANA IVANOVIC def AMELIE MAURESMO 64 36 64

this was the best match at a grand slam, it was in the evening in front of the loud french crowd, the match had evrything so many great shorts from both players especially from ANA, it had so much drama and intensity with Anci beating the World Number 3, home girl, and a tournament favourite.
The best tennis match do far for me.

Why is Dementieva/Davenport on there? It's among the most poorly played matches of the year that featured a top player (Venus in her match against Sesil is up there). Drama only gets you so far.

1. Venus/Davenport - Wimbledon - a classic match in every way despite the anticlimactic ending
2. Serena/Sharapova - AO - classic scoreline
3. Davenport/Molik - AO - thrilling, with great, excited play
4. Clijsters/Venus - US Open - tons of drama and good play by both at different times; a breakthrough for Kim
5. Venus/Sharapova - Wimbledon - best performance by a player this year, BUT lacked some drama
