Hingis has the same amount of hard-court Slams as Serena, more than Venus and Lindsay, and a winning record against Venus on hard-courts... not sure about Lindsay, but 4 slams to 2? A lot of people forget, hard courts were where Hingis thrived...

On clay Mouremo has to be a part of the top 10. Remember the many strong perfomances at Rome and Berlin and also in the us

I'm not so sure...Remember, she hasn't had a great result at the French Open, nevermind a title there. Since Mauresmo's first peak year (2001), she has compiled a 75-16 record on Claycourts- 11 of those wins came at the Fed Cup, ten of them against unworthy opponents. She has defeated a great number of players in those five years including, Venus, Serena, Dokic, Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters, Coetzer, Hingis, Capriati, Zvonareva, and Myskina, but she has only collected six total titles, two of which were given to her by walkovers or retirements from Venus Williams.

On claycourts, I would have Graf, Seles, Sanchez-Vicario (for their multiple titles at the French Open + many, many others), Martinez, Sabatini (constant great play on the surface), Venus (lots of titles + FO F), Serena (couple of titles, dominant in 2002 + FO W), Henin-Hardenne, Hingis and Clijsters (for similar reasons as posted prior). That means:

01. Steffi Graf
02. Monica Seles
03. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
04. Justine Henin-Hardenne
05. Conchita Martinez
06. Martina Hingis
07. Serena Williams
08. Kim Clijsters
09. Gabriela Sabatini
10. Venus Williams

I agree with a lot of your list, but one person that I would put in the top ten for grass for the past fifteen years is your namesake Sharapova.... She's a Wimbledon semifinalist and Champion, plus she won Birmingham twice and a finalist in '03. I know that Tauziat was a terror to play on grass, but I think Maria's accomplishments trumps Natalies...

over the last 15 years the players who won the most big titles on a surface (if that means she is the best, is always subjective anyway)

hardcourt * including rebound ace
1 Monica 6 slams
2 Steffi 5 slams
3 Martina the second, Serena 4 slams

clay
1 Steffi 4 slams
2 Monica 3 slams
2 Justine, ASV 2 slams

grass
1 Steffi 5 slams
2 Venus 3 slams
3 Serena 2 slams

indoor
1 Monica, Steffi three masters titles
2 Martina the second, Kim two masters titles

Outside on grass, because all three didn't play much outside wimbledon everybody won many titles on the surface outside the big tournament too!

Mauresmo shlould be in that list of great clay court players

I would put Mauresmo ahead of Pierce for that matter even if I like Mary but she just can't top Mauresmo

Steffi won 363 hardcourt matches in twice the time Lindsay won 396.

Obviously ASV is a better clay-court player than Graf. Because she won more matches on that surface in a shorter time-frame.

Steffi had all-time greats Navratilova and Evert as competition. In a time when Evert played her "best tennis" (1985/86) Graf beat her for the first time (April 1986) and never lost again. In a time when Navratilova had won 6 consecutive Wimbledons and would go on to reach a slam final 7 even years later. Same Navratilova who was able to beat Seles 5 times in the 90ies.

Davenport would have stood no chance whatsoever against Navratilova on hard-courts in the late 80ies. The time of this slow-moving tennis elephant (remember her at Wimbledon this year? ) came only when there were no tier-1 greats any more in the game and the tier-2 greats (Hingis, Willies, Belgians) were injured.

Seles never "kicked (Steffi's) ass".
Actually Steffi was 3-2 H2H in the time when Seles was #1 pre-stabbing.
Monica never beat Steffi on fast U.S.-style hardcourts (only on slow high-bounce Australian ReboundAce).

Especially as a Davenport fan I would be very careful. To compare her with Steffi Graf is ridiculous. And Davenport's competition in her hard-court wins .... :tape: :tape:

it's called bias! maybe seles should be on that list. but too many players are so good on hardcourts. heck, even dementieva had great hardcourt results. but seeing that venus and kim has had dominant hardcourt wins leading to their slam wins, i had to put them in front considering the competition then and now. and as for venus below kim, i really think that kim's a better hardcourt player.

Hey you QueenLindsay, you may like a player the best, as I or many do, but you can't change facts or history to make them fit your opinions! How can you dare to say Graf had no competition before Seles showed up! So, she had to beat great players like Navratilova or Sabatini the previous years to win G Slams and be the Nš1 player, and they are just no competition for you? Give me a break! I like and respect Lindsay, both for her personality and her talent (her strokes are just great technique and hers is my favorite serve among the women's tour), but you better ask her about the player that, as you unpolitely say, kicked her ass in Championships '94 final and she'll tell you what kind of competition there was those days!

I hate to say it (he just recently bad repped me), but he's right. Seles winning three in a row was a feat definitely worthy of praise, but Graf had more success on this surface than Monica has by far. We all jump on Sharapova for not being able to slide and praise Justine for being such a great slider. These things were never said of Monica, luckily. Although it's very well known that she wasn't a natural mover on the surface. Seles is actually living proof that you don't have to be able to slide on the surface to be succesful on the surface. Even with that said, Steffi's game was much more suited to the surface. Her slices stayed low, her speed kept her in points, her footwork made her strong defensively, her forehand was almost as deadly as normal and made her strong offensively, and her natural ability to slide made her perfect for the clay. Monica's power game was so much further ahead of the rest of the fields that it covered up her weaker movement, in addition to that, the aggressive serve & volleyers were more hurt more by the surface, than Seles was helped by it- another factor for her success. Don't get me wrong, Seles was wonderful on the dirt. The way she would open the court, the power combined with her use of angles, and the way she would attack her opponents clay-weakened serves for winners were really amazing. I think she's one of the greatest, but I still give Steffi the edge over her.

cliijsters has a few good wins this season...and all of a sudden she's a better hardcourter than venus? dream on.

if u look at their all time hard court winning percentage, venus is 233-48, 0.829. kim is 197-42, 0.824. so there's only 0.005 separating them. so it's not so much of a difference. so what if i have differing views from u. everybody is entitled to their own opinions.
