1986 US Open
In the year of the all-Czech singles finals, Ivan Lendl defeats Miloslav Mecir for the men's crown and Martina Navratilova defeats Helena Sukova for the women's title. All four players in the singles finals where born in Czechoslovakia. Navratilova, however, is an American citizen and Lendl is a resident of Greenwich, Conn.

It was Ginny Wade. She was the very first Slam winner I can remember I’ll tell you why, because there’s a fascinating story as to why I can remember Ginny winning the Wimbledon title.
I was quite young at the time, and I hadn’t been very well, so my mother Ethel phoned for the doctor. When the doctor arrived the final had just begun. The doctor came in and asked “Is he breast fed or bottle fed?” “Breast fed” was the reply.
Okay then "Strip down to your waist," the doctor ordered.

As the doctor examined her breasts. He squeezed and pulled each one for a while and then he sucked hard on each nipple. Finally he remarked, "No wonder this child is suffering from malnutrition. You don't have any milk!"
"That's right," said the woman. "This is my sister's child. I’m his aunty Ida"

That’s how I remember it so well, because shortly after social services arrived and I was taken into welfare for a short period. I think it was due to the fact that my aunty Ida was a transsexual.

Thanks for the link, Drimal. :)

Some people will need to remember that the Australian Open was played twice in 1977 (Jan. and Dec.), and from 1978-1985 it was played in Dec. It was not played at all in 1986, and moved back to Jan. in 1987. :)

Little Justin was born in summer of 1986.
When Graf destroyed Navratilova twice in Wimbledon, won the Golden Grand Slam her was 2 years old. When Graf won FO/Wim/USO in 2 consecutive years (1995/96) he was 9 & 10 years old.
So he definitely is the person to judge Graf's play ......

BTW, when Graf was over-the-hill 1999 after her severe reconstructive knee surgery she nevertheless overtook both Serena and Venus in the WTA rankings, beat a 19-year-old Venus in Wimbledon (in that year Venus won 6 WTA titles).

I was almost 12, yeah. I'm 18 now, and I didn't being following tennis until 4 years ago. I never have said that the Willies ever invented tennis. I am very aware of tennis history. I know that Steffi Graf was great for her era, but I have only seen her play matches the are put on monicaselessite.com and other places. I just don't believe that Steffi ever played the sisters at their best. They hadn't even won majors yet when Steffi played them. They are much more mature and just plain old better now (well Serena could get in better shape). If Steffi were to play the sisters at their best, Steffi would lose. Her game didn't intimidate them, where as Steffi was intimidated by their serves and power (she has said this before regarding Venus' serve).

Billie Jean King won the US OPEN singles title. King's semifinal opponent is 16-year-old Chris Evert, who makes her U.S Open debut. Evert will go on to win the U.S. Open six times and make the semifinals each of the next 15 years.

I posted that Angela Mortimer was the 1st GS winner in my lifetime and, unlike other people's responses, nobody jumped on board and said, "me too!!".

What's up with that?

Hey Hellen Lawson, I noticed you got the cold shoulder too. WTF?

I knew very little about Angela Mortimer, so I just looked her up. She won 3 majors: RG1955, AO1958, and Wimbledon 1961. In that Wimby final there were 2 British women (Mortimer vs. Christine Truman) --- imagine that! ;)
