View Full Version : Give Serena Williams a break!!!

Give her a damn break, I never liked the girl, always prefered her sister like 10 times, but I am starting to like her and I really feel for her.
People expect too much out of her, and when she losses everyone starts jumping at her, insulting her. Who cares what she said in her interview, she lost, what did u people expect her to say, I am so proud of my loss, Tian Tian is just too good of a player for me to beat, get real, tian tian will probably lose next round, not that I dont think she can be a good player, but today nearly everyone in the top 250 is dangerous.
Serena Williams is a great player, a great champ, often times I have been resented cause she has beaten the hell out of my players, but you have to respect her, she is a great champ. Everyone goes trough their slumps, some more than others, but look at Steffi, look at Martina Hingis. However I dont understand why people on this board can hate her so much, and jump on the I hate Serena bandwagon. Look at what she has accomplished, 7 grandslams, yet she doesnt even have 25 years. She is a african-american girl from a poor neighberhood, in her naighberhood people where getting shot while she was practising on the court with her father,(dont like Richard Williams, gives me a bad vibe, but at the same time kudos to him for getting his daughters at the top of the game) . I think its an amazing story and she has done so much for african-americans in the sport, and for tennis in general. She introduced a new sort of athletisism to the game, and raised the bar.
She might be in a slump, but she has time to comeback, and even if Serena never came back as before, never reaches the top spot or even wins another grandslam, she is still a champ, she has accomplished amazing feats which I hope only someday my faves can even get close to accomplishing.
Kudos To Serena I respect her and her game and wish her the best, I hope she only comes back stronger from this loss.

and a good job by Tian Tian, its not everyday a player beats someone like Serena with her accomplishments, and doesnt matter how she played.
Tian Tian sould feel good, good luck to her.;)

She's a great champion,no doubt about that. But I think most of the cynicism of some has to do with things like the "raising the bar" thread or fans calling her the best player in history. I don't believe in kicking someone when they are down, but statements like that from fans invite negativity from non-fans when things go wrong. :smoke:

Well, Serena needs to calm and decide what to do. She is very young and has an extraordinary career, but she need to get fit to be competitive. One of the things that make Serena almost unbeatable in 2002-03 was that she was very intimidating, if she loses with non top 100 players the rest would think that they have and oportunitie against Serena and causes her trouble. If she recovers totally and lose some pounds she will be a threaten again

people expect a lot for lots of reasons, including serena's self-proclaimed sernea slam. how many other players do you know who have had it there right in their hands and then let it go. monica seles was prevented from the most glorious career of all. martina hingis needed surgery, steffi graf was out when she went out through injury.

i can't think of anyone who has squandered so much in tennis. and i'm not a serena hater. just a serena disappointer. i don't have serena's talent, but such a talent has to be respected, nurtured, and cherished by the player. all the legends of the game did that. serena hasn't. i don't think she will ever win a grand salm again - now hate me. and before you criticise my lack of upper and lower cases etc., my computer has gone awry. just like serena. whereas i can get another one, serena can't get these years back.

personally, i think it's very sad, that someone was given the talent to be the greatest of all, and absolutely threw it away.

You kind sentiments are much appreciated! It's easy to kick someone when they're down and in Serena's case, not only is it easy, it's fun for most people (or so it seems).

This fan hasn't lost hope. Serena fans will eventually have the last word. Haters enjoy this moment in time...

The knocking of Serena has been very mild so far compared to what Maria gets from the haters on this board when she loses a match

probably because Sharapova is brought into everything, like there could be a thread about Serena, or whoever and Maria has to be brought into it when she has nothing to do with the topic.
Everyone has to talk about her 24/7, I think in Maria´s case she is a great player, and is a very talented kid, but her fans make it hard to like her sometimes. For once leave Maria out of a thread, nothing against her or you, but I was talking about Serena, post on a different thread if you dont like it.
And the people who are still picking on Serena kicking her when she is down, they are just imature, so no hard feelings. Most people are immature and cant grasp certain ideas or point of views. Than again everyone has their own opinions. I just hope people will think about how much they have accomplished in comparison to Serena, what have u people done in tennis, than again I dont think Serena would spend all her time on a web board judging people she didnt know.
Anyway keep ur head up Serena, for each bad loss you have 5 great wins to boast off.;)

Damned Eurosport isn't showing any matches until Friday.
BEIJING, China (Ticker) - Tiantian Sun played on China's Olympic gold medal-winning doubles team at the 2004 Olympics. Now she will be known for stunning Serena Williams in the China Open.

Ranked No. 127 in the world, Sun delighted the home crowd with a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory over the fourth-seeded Williams in a second-round match at the Beijing Tennis Center on Wednesday.

"I never expected to win," Sun said. "I wouldn't say it's a miracle, but it's a breakthrough. Beating such a high-ranked player will give me more confidence in forthcoming matches."

It was the 23-year-old Sun's biggest match since losing to then-No. 1 Lindsay Davenport in the second round of Amelia Island in April 2004.

"It's a fantastic victory, not only for Sun but for Chinese tennis in general," tournament director Ekkehard Rathberger said. "We have said all along that the China Open will help the development of tennis in the country and Sun's win will help accelerate that."

While it was a historic win for Sun, the loss ranks as perhaps the worst of Williams' career. The defending champion has been hampered by knee and ankle injuries and committed 22 unforced errors.

"I played terrible," Williams said. "I never expected a tough match like this. I was struggling with my left knee. I'm disappointed I couldn't perform better."

A seven-time Grand Slam winner, Williams saved four match points before Sun converted her fifth chance with a forehand pass to win the tiebreaker.

don't know the source it was copied from the serena thread

She has allways been insulting to her oppenents in both defeat and victory never giving them any credit.
Whenever she looses, its allways because she has an injury never because of her opponents abilities or her own inabilities.
She deserves every bit of criticism she gets.
She is fat and out of shape not injured.
She needs to do what her sister did this year.
Being a little more respectful would go a long way to earn more supporters worldwide.
Right now lots of people like me are just happy that she is loosing.
Perhaps she will not be able to make back up to the top.
She could eventually become one of the top players again but it will take a bit of training.

I mean this in the nicest way possible but you need a serious reality check. How in the world is someone who is living their life the way they want to "disappointing' as you put it? To me you are no better than the commentators who only care about tennis. The second you and the numerous other people who knock both sisters for their "outside" interests or whatever it is you choose to knock them about today realize that tennis is not and will not ever be the only thing in their life, the sooner you will get over this train of thinking. Serena is living the life SHE wants to live, I don't find that to be disappointing at all. It takes a serious lack of perspective to be truly disappointed in someone who "isn't living up to their full abilities" in what amounts to be a small portion of their life, when there are numerous other more important things in the world.

Maria, Serena, Venus,....they are all Wimbledon Champions, all players who have been #1 (or currently are) and are the three highest paid female athletes in the world. It is very hard to expect perfection from them all of the time. However, I remeber something my mom told me when we were watching Pete lose his match to Federer at Wimbledon. The way the commentators seem to turn on a player when they're going through a slump is just terrible. Pete had already won 13 slams by then...the most for any man, and Mary Carillo was saying that he has no dedication to the sport. He had accomplished more than anyone in that announcer booth! The same goes for Serena, Venus, and Maria. It's like once you reach #1 or win a slam, and be damned if you do both, you're expected to be perfect all of the time....it doesn't happen! Although they are athletes, they are still HUMANS first, and the beauty of humanity is our blatant imperfections. Whatever Serena is going through, you have to believe that she wants to get back to the top, or else she wouldn't be playing...she could retire TODAY, and STILL be the best player of the DECADE...to this point. Whatever she's going through, whether injury related or mental, it's something that she has to work through. Besides, all of you non-Serena fans should be thanking GOD, because when she gets herself together....your fave won't win ANY matches against her! Great thread BTW

I remember this stuff. I thought it was horrible the way people seemed to turn on him, saying he should retire and just put everyone out of their misery. I was never much of a Pete fan, but it was overboard. I was really cheering for him to win the US Open just because of that. Every top player really goes thru this, if Maria doesn't produce next year, it will really be her turn.

I agree and I think everything a player says in post match interviews gets over-analysed here but Serena is someone whose comment get extra-analysed, even by journalists. Serena was not at her best the other day against Sun, so she was just being honest. I wouldn't expect her to come in and lie and say "I was great today but Sun was better than me at my best". She probably was 50% of her level (even though she did not say that). But if Serena doesn't gush over the player who beat her she's a sore loser, moreso than almost any other player on the tour.
