She deserves a thread here. I saw her play yesterday in the US Open qualies and she is very good! She has such smooth groundies and a great all around game. I think she has a great future and someone the US should be paying more attention to.
GO VANIA! :bounce:

Vania is doing really well recently. She is in the qualies of the Australian Open and currently around 203 WTA. It's a pity that not that many people are paying too much attention to her. But perhaps that is good because she doesn't need the media spotlight watching her every move.

Wow hopefully Vania can break through in the Tucson tournament and win it! She's proved that she can at least be in the top 40 from her wins in the US Open and challengers. She just needs to do well in the Australian and then her name will soon become a household tennis name. :)

Smart player, good hands at the net. (generally) knows when to play defensive shots and powerful shots. Can win defensively but plays better agressively (ex. Camille Pin). Strong serve good volleys. Good strategic thinker. Strong forehand.

Please, Please, Please do well against Germany so that it will shut the mouths of those who think that the US will lose badly. :crosses fingers: I've heard a variety of comments from "I've never heard of some of these players besides Craybas [read the newspapers idiots!] to some of the girls are good but won't do well on clay [reeally? hmmm...yet two of the players on team Germany aren't in the top 100 . . . surely you can't mean that they will beat any player on Team US ...aren't our players in the top 100?]. This is the chance to really raise the game level. Underdog overall, most likely considering they have Anna. But individually? With the exception of Anna, I don't believe, at least in Vania's case, she should be worried about a fast loss against the other German players. . . she's proven that she can beat top 50 players.

According to the latest ranking, Vania is 5th highest ranking US woman player.

25 DAVENPORT, LINDSAY 745 11
37 SHAUGHNESSY, MEGHANN 531 24
43 PERRY, SHENAY 461 20
45 JACKSON, JAMEA 455 21
48 WILLIAMS, VENUS 447 8
50 KING, VANIA 436 21

Davenport must be very close to retirement. Venus williams only played 8 tournaments in 2006; she too must be thinking seriously about retirement.

After the 2007 Australian Open, with luck, we might see Vania King in the top 40 and become the second-ranked US player.
I would go as far as predicting that, if all goes smoothly, Vania can, and will, beat anyone below the top 30 right now.

King doesn't want to be a one-year wonder
The 19-year-old from Long Beach wins her opener at Indian Wells, a good first step in her effort to avoid sophomore jinx in her second year as a tennis pro.
By Lisa Dillman, Times Staff Writer
March 9, 2007

Vania King was aware of the potential potholes in getting through the second year on the women's tennis tour.

Knowing this is one thing. Artfully dodging them is quite another.

Which is why there was a sense of relief for King in getting through a difficult first round at the Pacific Life Open on Thursday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The 19-year-old from Long Beach beat qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, taking the final three games.

This doubled her main-draw win total on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 2007. King has lost in the first round three times this year and did not make it out of qualifying in Sydney or Tokyo. Her ranking, which had been 50 at the end of the year, dropped to 78 this week.

King spoke candidly about the inherent nature of sophomore struggles on the tour.

"You look at all the girls that come up on tour and the first year — I went through the same thing — no one knows you," said King, who won a singles title at Bangkok in 2006. "You have no expectations for yourself. You can basically only go up.

"You play people and they haven't heard of you. They think they should beat you, so they're nervous and you play freely. The second year is almost always tougher. The ones that can keep their nerve and stay mentally strong do the best, and that's what I'm trying to do."

That, and her own aspirations, have made 2007 all the more challenging. She reached the third round at this event in 2006.

"It's a new year. A lot more people are looking at me than last year," King said. "I have higher expectations of myself. I consider myself a perfectionist."

To that end, she has been training of late with a mentor from her past, the venerable Robert Lansdorp, the former coach of No. 1 Maria Sharapova.

Pete Sampras once joked that Lansdorp made his sister, Stella Sampras, cry during lessons when they were children. His toughness, apparently, has been tempered but not his ability to fill his players with confidence.

"I've known Robert since I was 9, so I've gone to see him off and on for almost 10 years," King said. "He used to intimidate me. Now I think I understand him better."

The immediate task for King is a second-round match here against Ana Ivanovic. Ivanovic defeated King, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round of the Australian Open.

"First I'm going to try get a couple more games," King said, smiling.
