Looks like a tough draw for Maria, likely to face Molik in the 4th round, Kuznetsova in the QF, and Clijsters in the SF.

Good luck Maria!

I think this is a great draw, a tough first round match to test her, and the rest (until the SF) should be rather easy if she is fit, go Maria !!

her first round match will be pretty tough, but after that there doesnt seem to be anyone who should give her too much trouble, Molik is out of form and Safina and Penneta dont seem to have the games to beat her. If Kuzzie is back in form and makes it to the quarter finals that could be a tough match but a semi final birth could be a definate reality but after that it will be a lot tougher with either a Williams or Clijsters likely to be waiting. But one match at a time. Good luck Masha i hope your healthy and enjoy your first slam as the number seed.

I think Maria will have a good showing here.
She should revel in her status as top seed - she will definitely have more opportunities to do so in the future.
I also hope she faces the strongest possible opponents - it will bring out the best in her and will also serve as good experience for future slams.
If she can take the title - then that would be fantastic. It would be a dream ending to a superb year for her. :)

GOOD LUCK!

I just heard this quote of Masha after her match, on the BBC website:

"It's so windy today I'm really glad I had a piece of chocolate cake last night or else I would have been blown away out there"
And Maria Sharapova has her own way of dealing with the New York weather.

Glad though to see that she was coping with ease in windy conditions though. Remember those matches where she badly underperformed earlier this year. Though both her opponants so far have strong games, I would like to think she could hold upwell against the Lindsays, Kims and Justines of the WTA.

Maria won the points that mattered, she won the deuce games :bounce: Mirza might have been a bit nervous....
Anyway, people on GM were talking about the possibilty of an upset, but it turned out to be a no-contest, kinda like Danilidou, if you ask me

Next thing they say is Petrova has a chance to upset our Maria, and Maria will win easily again

I think you're very right Morningglory, but not about Petrova. I regard her as the first real threat to Maria's hopes in this grand slam, the first 'really good player'*. She's a consistent top tenner (at least, when I last looked she was- though I might be out of date, I'll admit) and I really believe Maria has to be on top of her game and keep Petrova out of the match, if she doesn't want Petrova to make this very hard for her.

*this may sound quite harsh - that's not what I meant,. I just mean that if she'd lost in a match before this one, I would consider it a shock. A loss to Petrova would be a bad result, but not a total shocker.

Masha played quite wellto win. Well done Masha. She seemed to temper her power in some parts and then unleash in other games. She played smart controlled tennis and Mirza self destructed on some points. I have been very impressed with her US Open and now she has made the quarters of every slam. Good luck against Petrova

That was a much better performance from Maria (was worth me taking the day off work for a "sick day"!). Nadia should be a bit more of a challenge, i expect this to be simmillar to the tight encounter they had at wimbledon.
I was also very impressed with the power Mirza was getting, when she improves her serve and her fitness a bit more, she'll become a real force in the grand slams.

Good luck in the Quarters Maria - a mighty fine effort on making the QF in all the slams.

I'm very happy with this win for Maria over Sania! Sania was a dangerous opponent with nothing to lose.

After a small hiccup in the first few games, Maria played brilliantly, particularly on serve and return to crush the Mirza threat! She'd demoralized a tricky opponent by the end of the match, and was starting to add more variety to her shots.

A good win. Build on this in the rest of the tournament, Maria!

I don't think so ;)

Maria will need to be VERY off her game to suffer a crushing defeat. I can only remember 1 in the past year, and that was to Lindsay. Read whatever you think into that one, (I don't know what to read into it, so I tend to ignore it!) But Maria doesn't suffer Crushing defeats. Any kind of defeat seems to be rare for her, and when playing against someone like Nadia, I would say she would need to be off her normal standards to lose.

What I said earlier was basically that maria had better be on top of her game; Nadia's a very good player!

One clue that Maria is very tough, and will be great for many years---when the ball was thrown on the court, and she lost her temper---rightfully so---unlike so many players who let something like that cause them to to lose focus----she came right back and won the game.

It is the kind of thing that champions do.

What happened?
During a crucial point at deuce on Maria's serve in the 2nd set a ball came bouncing onto the court (from the crowd I believe) and Maria stopped playing, after a she thought it was clear that there was a stray ball, and Nadia's last shot went in. The umpire ( :retard: ) somehow didnt see the ball and gave Nadia the point which didnt please Maria too much and she went to the chair and argued for about a minute, she even asked for the referee to come out but the umpire wouldnt have it. Yuri was jumping up and down too. In the end Maria gave up on it and went back and played 3 great points in a row to save a BP and hold serve. I must admit I was also yelling at the umpire and was yelling CMON when Maria played so well after...it was a great effort to keep her head after a ridiculous bit of umpiring.

Maria is DEFINITELY the underdog in this matchup against Kim. She's never beaten her; and when she's lost, it hasn't been pretty. She'll need to bring her "A" game to the table; aggressive, fearless, punishing, and error-free. And Kim will need to be "off" her game, as well.

Good luck to Maria, in the semis! :bounce:

However, this isn't looking so good for her...

Maria has only played Kim once since 2003, when she was a far less experienced and capable player. The matchup earlier this year was a close one and it was played in conditions that troubled Maria more so than Kim...Maria had her chances...if she can take them in this SF then it could be different :)

I agree Dan. A lot of people reckon that this is going to be a very easy victory for Kim, but like the YEC victory over Myskina last year, Maria comes into this match with a point to prove, and a very good chance of winning. I expect this to be a very tough 3 set match, which could come down to whoever keeps their cool in the dying stages of the match.

Keep in mind Maria will have had 2 days to evaluate her game and get that extra much needed practice in, and will come out firing come friday..

All the best Maria, and keep the faith all!

I agree also. Maria's playing better than at the time of her defeat to Kim, so she should be able to strach Kim more.

You pointed out how those windy conditions favoured Kim's game; she hits shots with more top which naturally give you more margin for error, wheras Maria hits flat. My only worry is if, as in earlier matches, the wind blows up again, will Maria really have what it takes to win? I sure hope so!

Sep 8th, 2005, 11:06 AM
I don't, she got a break point, it's not up to you to say something about it, that's why there is an umpire, bad calls happen, it was also hard on Petrova, she could have lost all her concentration at that point, but she didn't, I can't be mad at players for not saying anything about a bad call, I know I wouldn't lol

One of the main areas where the wind affects Maria's game is her serving. Maria has a much higher ball toss than a lot of the girls so theres more chance for it to be affected...if Maria loses the potency of her serve, which is one of the best around, then it makes it harder to hold and therefore apply pressure. Maria showed in her earlier matches that she can handle the wind better nowadays but Kim is a much higher quality opponent than Maria faced in the early rounds. I hope everything goes Maria's way, she deserves a good break

Maria can win this match if conditions are reasonable and she brings something like her A game.

Kim has her speed, defensive ability and consistency BUT she also has a poor record in slams, and is the favourite with the weight of expectation. If Maria is strong, starts well, or makes a strong come-back, and doesn't go walkabout, she should be able to crack Kim's resistance.

Andy.
Sep 9th, 2005, 09:43 AM
This is question time for both Women. Kim is yet to show that she is strong ebough to win a slam. Masha must bring her A game and really make Kim doubt herself. I think Masha can do it she has to be agressive and go for the lines accepting that she will make errors but she has to make Clijsters weary and questioning herself. Good luck Masha

Hard luck Maria, you should be extremely proud of how you fighted during that second set.
Any word on what her next tourny is?

Good 2nd set comeback. Too many UEs, unfortunately.

I'm sad. It was a good USO run for Maria though. Hope Kim takes home the championship, she deserves it. :D

I'm so proud of Maria, she just fought even though it looked like she was gonna lose with big numbers, how she saved those match poins was amazing !! awesome tennis from her, those high balls and super drop shots and amazing lines, she was just so great !! too bad she wasn't playing well in that first set and that she couldn't serve anymore in the third, but she just didn't give up, such a big fighter, I love her even more after this match, she is going to win more slams in the future for sure !!

Thats right mate :yeah:
Maria was great...could tell she was having a s**t of a day, her big serve deserted her, but her fighting spirit...I knew that wasnt it at 5-6 0-40 she played her best when hanging on...

lol, I thought to myself at 0-40 at 5-6, no big deal Maria, just win the next points lol, I was going out of my mind when she actually won that game lol

when she came back to take the 2nd, I actually thought it would be like that semifinal last year against Lindsay. and serving first in the third set, I thought her chances just increased. then, she left the court to take a break. I got nervous.

I'm not a particularly superstitious man myself, but i know the tennis world is a superstitious lot. I was surprised that she took a toilet break. I felt it broke her rhythm. She had just won the second set and she's taking a break? whenever I'm winning at a card game or a video game, I try not to take a toilet break so that "luck" won't leave me, and usually it works.

It's just a silly superstition of mine, but when she lost her first two service games in the third, I knew the match was lost.

Even though she lost 6-3 in the 3rd, it was Nice to see her try a few tricks to break Kim twice, though. If only she had more of those in the first set.

Even though she lost im so proud of Masha. This is one of the best macthes i have ever seen. Masha showed no fear on those MP's she just unleashed awesome shot after awesome shot and fought with all she had. Her shot making was terrific today and had Kim on the back foot for a lot of the match. Well done on playing so well in the slams this year Masha.

She didn't lose that third set because of her toilet break, I do think it gave Kim some time to think but the reason why she lost that third set was because she just couldn't hold serve anymore, as Maria said she ran out of gas

Masha did well. I'm proud of her. :) Unlucky.

Her fitness wasn't perhaps 100% - but she put up one hell of a fight.

I agree, she obviously put every bit of remaining energy she had into that second set.

The one thing i'm going to remember from that particular match is the first match point, where Maria played that awesome drop shot :worship:
