Heydi is injured :( She lost 6-0 6-1 to Aleks in Victoria, Mexico this week and they withdrew from double :sad: I hope it is not too serious

Again her stupid back problem! I can understand her, I have similar problems, when it starts, it is long before it ends!

she's still really young too, I didn't realize she was still a teenager. This is good for Canada.

She was a pretty good junior player, in the top 20, 2-3 years ago! She has a very aressive game, with spin, she could be great on clay! She needs to work on confidence though!

Heidi hits it so hard. Her last season was nothing short of amazing. Now getting to the second round of qualies makes her more $$$ and points. This is a great time for womens tennis in Canada, lets hope they keep it up. I would love to see 3 or 4 top 100 by seasons end.

Lucky (perhaps) for Heidi, the #1 seed just lost 6-2 in the 3rd to Aniko Kapros #199 world...All final round qualies are tough but should give Heidi a fair shot at making her first slam. That would be fantastic for such a great young lady.

I didn't a whole lot from her but she has really done nothing all year! I thought she would have at least done well in a couple ITF's. But she has only made one Q all year..

i am happy for her because she has always been my favorite canadian woman

it sucks that she has to play dubois next but i REALLY hope she can find a way to win that

Heidi is playing Laura Robson in the first round of US Open qualifying. I'm not sure about this draw. Robson is hyped up to be a very talented player but she's very inconsistent and has lost to players much worse than Heidi this year. Hope Heidi can get through! :)

Well, she's on the entry list of Plantation 25K starting on the week of January 16, but other than that, I don't really know what her plans are after the tough year she's had in 2011.

She has played 2-25K events this year. Not sure if it was an injury or burn out, or just re thinking things. She looks pretty solid at the challenger level but really needs more heat on the serve and better court movement. I hope she gets better, great young lady

Heidi's been doing pretty well at the US 25K's this year, making QF at Rancho Sante Fe and Plantation. This week she's qualified and made it to the quarters again in Suprise (beating the sixth seed). She'll play Foretz-Gacon. She's back in the top 300; it's nice to see her doing well again. Good Luck :)

Heidi's playing an awful lot lately. Anyone know if she'll play at IHB (Indian Harbour Beach) ITF starting April 30? It's my home tournament. Missed the chance to see her play in person at Clearwater a few weeks ago and really want to see her play again this year.

She'll be back in the top 200 soon, where she belongs.

Haidi wins her second tournament in as many weeks! What a great run. Glad she's kicked off her injury problems and is back, better than ever. Some very solid wins and good come-from-behind playing. Any chance she can get an SE for Dothan? I know she was on the qualy list, but was still playing in Pelham.............

El Tabakh hangs around, wins Pelham Racquet Club $25,000 Pro Circuit Challenger


Heidi El Tabakh just wanted to hang around a little longer.

She had just lost her serve in an 18-point game in the third set of the Pelham Racquet Club Women's $25,000 Pro Circuit Challenger.

And she wasn't yet ready to go home.

"'Don't think about the score. Just play every point and just try and hang in there,'" she said to herself. "That's what I did. I forgot about the score, that I was 4-2 down. I just tried to make the match a little longer."

El Tabakh, a 25-year-old Egyptian-born Canadian, won the final four games of the match as she came back to knock off top seed and two-time former champion Edina Gallovits-Hall of Romania 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Following the match, the victor made an immediate phone call to let her mother, Summer, in Tampa know what she had done. She made a similar call a week ago when she won the $25,000 event in Jackson, Miss.

"Except I sounded a little more tired this week," she said. "(Gallovits-Hall is) a great player, a top 100 player. I lost to her last time here. I knew I had to dig deep to beat her today. I was running out of energy towards the end but I'm glad I pulled it off."

When the match began, perhaps the toughest opponent for each player was a stiff wind out of the south.

"It's kind of difficult, especially when you're playing against a big hitter," the 27-year-old Gallovits-Hall said. "She's a big hitter. It's pretty difficult when you play against the wind; you have to put more on the ball and I didn't do that today."

The Pelham winner in 2007 and 2010 was effective with slices on her forehand and backhand wings. But, she admitted later, that was desperation.

"That was me not moving," she said.

El Tabakh said she wasn't moving well as she lost her serve twice in the first set.

"Towards the second set, I stepped it up a little bit, started moving my feet and started to play a little more aggressive," she said. "That caused her to hit a lot more shorter balls. I was able to finish off a lot more points."

Gallovits-Hall broke El Tabakh once in the second set but lost her serve three times. The eventual winner fought off four break points in the fourth game of the middle set.

Each player lost her serve to open the third. El Tabakh led 40-love in the sixth game before losing seven game points and yielding on her second break point of that game.

The Canadian responded by breaking Gallovits-Hall in the seventh game and again in the ninth. She fought off two break points in the 10th game of the set before winning on her second match point.

"We've played a few times before and I knew I had to be a little more aggressive," Gallovits-Hall said. "(Sunday), I was just always on the defense. I didn't really hit the ball. I was the one always running around. It's kind of hard to win when you're always on the defense."

El Tabakh, ranked 249, earned $2,940. The 27-year-old and 96th-ranked Gallovits-Hall received $1,666.

Saw all three of Heidi's matches at IHB this week. Went to the qf yesterday and Heidi played well in stretches, but just couldn't quite keep enough momentum going when she had it. Really thought after she had won the second set and started out strong in set three was going to pull out one of her patented three set comebacks but it wasn't meant to be yesterday.

I sat courtside and was pretty nervous, like always when a favorite is playing. I could see Heidi's Mom at one end of the court and I thought I may have spotted her Dad there too at one point, but I'm not sure. To keep myself busy in between points I charted the match point by point in my notebook, and there had to be at least a couple dozen people who either sat down next to me during the match or reached over and tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I was Heidi's coach or was "with Heidi" or her camp. One of the officiating crew even asked me if they were going to let me watch the films with her after the match, lol. Just goes to show you can B.S. your way through pretty much anything, lol...

Heidi didn't serve quite as well today, but I guess if you watched the stream you could see that. She fought well--especially in those long games in the second set where she really could have folded up. One had 6 deuces, another had 4, and she wound up winning both. Really great fighting from her. After that, at 5-2, Sanchez got frustrated and smashed her racquet and got a racquet abuse warning and then took a bathroom break, I guess to compose herself.

Heidi hit some amazing (and clutch) winners under pressure in key moments when she needed them--a lot of them when facing break points or in those tought deuce games. So in that regard, she can be pretty happy with the way she played. It wasn't a bad performance, and Sanchez was tough--she was playing for the wildcard and had motivation, so it wasn't going to be easy for Heidi. Wish she would have won, but she gave a really good accounting of herself this week, and but for a point or two here or there, she really could have won this event. She played as well as anyone, I think.

I noticed she has withdrawn from several ITF tournaments.
She had been getting good results and with a new career high I was looking forward to watching her move up the rankings even more.

Heidi's on the entry list for the January 7 25K ITF in Innisbrook, FL: http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/tournaments/women's-tournament/info.aspx?tournamentid=1100028284, which just came out yesterday (Dec. 13). That's the same week as qualifying for the Australian Open, right? Her ranking of 158 should be good enough to put her in the qualifying tournament there, shouldn't it? The reason I ask is that I would really like to see her play at Port St. Lucie the week of Jan. 14, which it looks like maybe she will enter (entry list for that one is due out Dec. 20), but obviously it would be great for her if she had a chance to be in the MD of the Australian Open.

Is anyone connected enough with her to know if she is playing in Australia or is instead playing the FL challengers?

Heidi is definitely playing the Australian tournaments. Her first one is qualies in Brisbane. It's strange as Heidi always signs up for Itf even when she doesn't plan on playing them. It's almost like she had an automatic sign up setting. I remember one week she was signed up for 8 itf tournaments in one week and ended up not playing any.

Thanks. She did withdraw from the Innisbrook ITF a day or two after I posted the above, as I figured, but then on December 20, the Port St. Lucie acceptance list showed her as the fourth highest ranked entrant. That tournament is the week of the Australian Open, so perhaps it is a contingency plan in the event she doesn't qualify. Or maybe, as you say, she just automatically signed up and will withdraw at the last minute.

I just saw the AO entry thread--looks like Heidi withdrew from quallies there. :sad: I hope she isn't badly injured. Get well soon!

Not a very good start to the year but she is playing in Doha next MD. Plays against Timea Babos who's also had a bad start. Hopefully she can get a win and get some nice points! :)

Too bad she lost, however....

She's only played two matches this year. Heidi's got the kind of game that by necessity makes her a "rhythm" player. Big serve, big groundstrokes. If either, or both are off, she's going to have a short day--on the losing end. She needs matches at this point, win or lose. Time on the court hitting the ball, finding her range, against players of her own ranking. With that will come confidence again. I saw her in Port St. Lucie in her first match of the year, and she lost the first 5 games of the match--i.e., of her year, against Jan Abaza, who, to be honest, is a decent but unspectacular kind of player. Heidi just made a lot of unforced errors from being rusty, but she was coming off of an injury and wasn't match fit, clearly. It was the first match she had played in months.

On the other hand, after getting down a break in the second set, she played Abaza virtually even from then on, breaking her a few times and fighting her way back into the match repeatedly as she did time and again last year when she was playing at her best and winning all of those matches during her win streak. So the fight is there, if not quite the execution at this stage, but I think she will improve if she keeps working hard and just plays as much as she can. I know the challengers can be rough, but I think she needs as much tennis at this point as she can get.

I think maybe she pulled out of that. I looked on the WTA site and couldn't find a result for it, but maybe they don't publish qualifying results. I thought she entered but withdrew, but I could be wrong.

Edit: I just checked the entry lists for Innisbrook and Osprey, and Heidi withdrew as of March 10. :sad: I am pretty sure that she lives/trains on the west coast of Florida near Tampa/Bradenton somewhere, so since those are so close to where she lives, I would think if she would play anywhere, and was able to at the moment, if would be there.

I wish Heidi was on some form of social media so she could confirm updates on her career.
