Sharapova Withdraws from Rogers Cup

TORONTO, Canada - Maria Sharapova will spend her last week as the world No.2 on the sidelines following her withdrawal from this week's Tier I event, the $1.3 million Rogers Cup presented by American Express.
Sharapova, who will become the 15th No.1 in computer rankings history on August 22, has been advised not to play in Toronto to allow a right pectoral muscle strain to heal. The same injury forced her withdrawal from the quarterfinals of last week's JPMorgan Chase Open presented by Herbalife in Los Angeles.

Had Sharapova beaten Daniela Hantuchova in that quarterfinal she would have risen to No.1 on Monday, August 15. Instead, she will become the fifth-youngest No.1 the following week, when Lindsay Davenport will fall below Sharapova due to undefended points she earned in winning the Cincinnati title 52 weeks ago.

"I'm very disappointed to have to withdraw from one of the Tour's premiere events in the Rogers Cup," said Sharapova. "I was hoping to be able to recover in time but based on my doctor's report today it's now clear I'd be unable to compete at anywhere near 100 percent this week and would risk further injury.

"The Rogers Cup is a fantastic event with some of the best fans in the world. I was very much looking forward to playing in the new facility and I look forward to the opportunity to play the event next year."

Sharapova's next scheduled event is the US Open, where she is expected to be seeded No.1 at a Grand Slam for the first time.

I'm glad to hear that she takes my reports seriously! ;)

Hope Maria will be 110% when she plays at the USO. I heard that pectoral/chest muscle injuries can be really bad.

Well, Maria pulled out before her Philadelphia 2004 semi-final with this same injury. Five days later, she played her first match at the season-ending WTA Tour Championships, and five days after that, she was crowned champion after beating Serena Williams in the final! :D

yeah it can be really bad, but if Maria takes enough rest she should have no troubles recovering before the US open
