andrew_uk Establishes New Method of Transport for PAW Players

Reuters: Los Angeles

World Number 1 andrew_uk revealed a suprise in his press conference after Saturday's Semi-Finals that he would no longer be travelling by aeroplane to tournaments. The London based player announced that after the final in Los Angeles, he would be travelling to Toronto in an Air Balloon, and that he intended on using the same method of transport from now on
"I was thinking..... Why should I keep travelling by aeroplane, I'd much rather try something else much different and a little bit unconventional" :p :p The 22 year-old has also welcomed other players to join him in his Air Balloon when travelling, and promoted the use of this transport as opposed to aeroplanes. "I hope more and more players start using them. We saw the terrible chaos at Heathrow Airport this week due to the problems with British Airways. PAW players cannot afford to be delayed, we have tournaments to get to, as well as other public appearances and conferences. I have always had a special liking for Air Balloons from a very young age, especially when I first heard the song, "Up, Up and Away!"" The Air Balloon will be taking off from Los Angeles on Sunday evening, and the Brit is due to arrive in Toronto on Monday Morning.

Would you like to fly in my beautipaw balloon? :p
Would you like to glide in my beautipaw balloon?
We could PAW among the stars together, you and I.

For we can PAW
We can PAW!
Up, up and away, in my beautipaw, my beautipaw balloon!

The world's a nicer place in my beautipaw balloon.
The picks are more concise in my beautipaw balloon.
We can make our paws and sail along the silver sky,

For we can PAW
We can PAW!
Up, up and away, in my beautipaw, my beautipaw balloon!

Suspended under a twilight canopaw
We'll search the draws for a pick to help us.
If by some chance you find yourself losing paws,
We'll find a pick to help us, keep the win before us.

PAW is waiting there in my beautipaw ballon.
Way up in the air in my beautipaw balloon.
If you'll hold my hand, we'll chase our paws across the sky,

For we can PAW
We can PAW!
Up, up and away, in my beautipaw, my beautipaw balloon!

:o :o :haha: :p :p  :wavey:

SpikeyAidanm Sails to Toronto...

Former Wimbledon finalist SpikeyAidanm is taking a yacht to Toronto, all the way from Stockholm. Inspired by Seth Cohen's sailing aspirations to Tahiti, the 18 year old Aussie took a yacht with BennyBoy. The two of them did not get sick during their 2 day voyage.

Since he is only ranked 84 and the Dutch Federation does not have enough budget James had to make do with this transport mode to get to Toronto:

We know them as the senior managers of PAW, but what do Spikey Aidanm and sandg actually do behind the scenes? silverwhite finds out more about their involvement in the game.

SpikeyAidanm

1. How did you get involved in the running of PAW?

Well quite coincidentally actually, thanks to WTAWorld going down and then re-opening and former manager Simon deciding to step down, someone had to take overÖ And as one of the more passionate players on my debut season, I joined forces with marcobarella and I managed the scoring points for that Wimbledon. As time wore on, some older players will be familiar as to what I like to call the ďMarco FiascosĒ that were common, players urged me to become the full-time manager. Iím not usually the type of guy who likes to manage or be a leader as such, usually I like following guidance from others, so thatís why it was a good opportunity to obtain some leadership skills, even if it was online. And a lot has changed in one year.

2. How do you manage to update the league tables so efficiently and consistently? Do you use a particular software or method to help you with the calculations?

Thank you for the compliment! Efficient managing comes through practice and effective use of software Ė (Excel). It took quite a while to set up the spreadsheet but I continued to manipulate it until all was needed was the input (ie each playersí picks) and the output (the table) would automatically be calculated. This year, I made it even quicker for myself by formatting the ďdotsĒ so that a certain number would appear after a certain number of digits, so the final product would appear more professional.

3. What were some of the highest points in your career as PAW Senior Manager? Any particular tournaments that you enjoyed managing the most?

Interesting question. I canít exactly say I enjoy running some more tournaments than others, but I guess the ones where there are fewer players and there is a smaller time lapse from the end of that dayís play and my availability to come online and post the updated standings, are more enjoyable. I guess Iíve always enjoyed running the LA Year End Champs since when the last ball is struck for their nightís play, occurs at the same time as my evening. So itís perfect timing. I obviously enjoy running tournaments in Australia as well.

4. How did you try to maintain your passion in the game when it started to wane?

Well I always try and ensure I spend a minimal amount of time possible doing the ďboringĒ stuff that is with the league table. Ever since I took over, Iíve attempted to make the game more interesting for players and to engage them into realizing PAW is more than just a weekly dose of picks. I introduced topics in the PAW forum (it was literally empty when Simon was running it), as well as PAW Fed Cup, did a comprehensive review last year with awards and so on.

It becomes hardest to maintain your passion when there are some whiners who have absolutely no respect for the PAW staff, I wonít mention any names but some expect us to be there for them 24/7, and unfortunately itís not that easy.

But overall, I find most PAW players to be very appreciative and thankful which is comforting.

5. Is a return to consistent management of the game probable?

Tough question. Iíll probably say no, unfortunately and itís not because I donít want to but itís because it is an unfeasible choice for me. Consistent management means having to spend a few uninterrupted hours a day at the computer, add on the time differences and my first year of Uni schedule and it all becomes quite hard to manage.

That being said, there is a strong chance I will run some tournaments here and there such as during the Australian summer and most US tournaments. I wouldnít rule off Wimbledon either since I probably will have a break then.

6. Tell us more about your vision for the game. Any new ideas coming up?

There are two main ones. Iíd like to find a reliable interviewer who can interview all PAW tournament winners each week and compile those quotes. I used to do it but got busy (again). In general, more passionate staff would be a huge benefit. And Iíd like the PAW Hopman Cup to take place, I planned it last year but we only had 2 commitments! Everyone was so eager to play in the Gold Coast or Auckland where there was ranking points up for grabs. I hope somehow more people will commit this year.

1. How did you get involved in the running of PAW?

First time, I joined the game as usual player in US Open 2002. As inexperienced players I played just got the number of win picks not the points, but in next tournament I can understand the strategy of game.
Since Simon retired from running the Game, I feel lose a big things in tennis board. Simon started & run the game very well, so sadly if the game has stopped. Spikey (Aidan) and Marcobarella tried to call back PAW players to play again and they run again and helped by others.
Actually, I want stand as the game keeper. First I took PAW Ranking but then I take more and more since many organizer had problems in their others activity.

2. How do you manage to update the league tables so efficiently and consistently? Do you use a particular software or method to help you with the calculations?

With the recent number of players, I thaught it isn't possible run PAW manually. I thaught all organizers used software to run the game, at least excell or another spreadsheet. Maybe I used the tools more than others.

3. Do you sometimes feel tired of the work? How do you overcome this?

Yes, I sleep then weak up if enough. But I can't do it for tournament in US time, its work time in here. I have to to finished it after work hour before sleep.

4. What's the best and worst thing about being in charge of the game?

The best thing if in a week just 1 tournament with small draw (32 draw), not much data to be processed.
The worst thing when I have to eliminate the points from a player (danielrosario) after he played in a week seriously.

5. What visions do you have for the game?

I have visions the game can run in ATP as well as in WTA also in others sport such as Badminton.
In this time I can do it just in PAW WTA, I have to divide my times with others while running PAW Game need much times.

6. Any memorable tournaments that stand out in your mind with regards to managing them?

US Open 2003, I have done Re-Calculation PAW Ranking after I saw the Ranking was counted wrongly since Simon left.
Linz 2003, first time I run the Game since no organizer who run it until day-2.

A very very old article from silverwhite that never got published in the non-existant PAW magazine ;)
