View Full Version : Lindsay in New Haven

Lindsay can get #1 back here.

Lindsay proved herself as a successful number one, plus, she's a successful businesswoman. At 29.

She beats Maria in every category.

#1 ranking. #1 WINNER. #1 body. Oh, and that little 6-0 6-0 DOMINANCE.

That's right. Lindsay is going to kick ass here.

If Maria pulls out of Toronto as well with the injury then the Number One Ranking and Seeding is ours through US Open, also with Lindsay playing a heavy Fall European Indoor season we may hang on all the way through to end of year and Maria has quite a few points defend including a final at the Tier One event in Switzerland. YAY!

No, she's not going to be the #1 seed at the US Open, even if Maria doesn't play Toronto.

I'm looking forward to Lindsay giving us an injury update. I'll be gutted if it's not good news.

As of yesterday, she was still 50/50 for New Haven, which is kind of concerning given that her first New Haven match is still ten days away.

That's not good at all. I really don't want her to skip the US Open, it's probably her favourite tournement and along with Wimbledon it's certainly the grandslam that is most suited to her game.

This doesnt sound promising-does anyone know exactley what the problem is with her back? I know its a lower back muscel strain-I never had one of this, but i thought muscel strains...could recover quite quickly as long as rest was enforced?

Its ben 6 weeks since lindsay played now....does anyone eles think this may be a little more serious than 1st anticipated?

Yes, with rest most can make a speedy recovery, but this isn't always the case.

And Lindsay just played two and a half weeks ago. I think that was the main issue. She came back too soon. Had she waited, I don't think she'd be in this kind of a situation right now. It was probably a mistake to come back so soon.

The latest update is that Lindsay has just started to hit again in the last few days, and is working daily with her physical therapist. Her chances of playing New Haven right now are 50/50. But, there are still at least 12 days until her first match, so there's still alot of time. My feeling is that if Lindsay is not comfortable with playing by the Sunday before the tournament, she'll pull out, but that's just my opinion.

I really have to question her training routines. Notice that the majority of her major injuries in recent years have come during hitting sessions - foot in New Haven 03, les at US Open 04, leg at Australian Open 05, leg at Tokyo 05, leg at Charleston 05, and back at Stanford 05. Maybe Adam/Lindsay/physio need to try to recognize an potential injury before it turns more serious.

Thats a pretty good point Andrew, and something I noticed at Wimbledon this year.

I'm Birmingham, Hype used to spend over 30 minutes warming up, and I mean, a proper warm up. She would jog slowly around the court, do all these leg routines, and have this sretchy elastic band thing, and literally worked every muscle she has, really slowly. I remember thinking that she must have been really warmed up. She did all of this before hitting a ball.

At Wimbledon, Lindsay walked onto court and just hit straight away, whilst Jill Craybas, on the court next to Lindsay, was warming up with the stretchy elastic thing.

When I saw Lindsay hitting [on TV] at Wimbledon it was very intense, she was moving constantly... it can't be good for her energy level.

I personally think that Lindsay's back injury was caused by the conditions when she played Amelie at Wimbledon and then when she had her fall and then it was majorly stressed in the final.

I hope Lindsay hasn't started hitting too soon, I'd rather she just rested a bit longer rather than risk a relapse. Lindsay hasn't missed a US Open in 13 years.

ugh thats depressing. maybe she tweaked it when she fell with that twisting motion and made it worse in the final!

i watched her warm-up for the final in B'ham too. She did do everything very steady. She even had a fun, light-hearted game of footie (Soccer to our USA friends) with her dad and 2 trainers. I think she even warmed up longer than she hit for - at first I thought that seemed a bit strange but it makes sense.

A few years ago, sort of when the Williams sisters started winning GS's (especially Wimby) there was a documentry on CH4 in the UK called, "The Williams Story" (I still have it on tape) and there are many shots of them just doing warm-up/strentching excersizes. They did hit some balls, but most of the work-outs were with medicine balls, "bungee bands" and even an excersize where they just tossed old rackets and baseball bats through the air - like in a service motion but releasing the racket/bat at the top of their service motion. A great way to warm up the arm, I thought.

So yeah, Andrew you have a valid point on the warm-up thing......however, we can't always go by what we see on court with Lindsay. We wouldn't know if mybe she's done 5/10mins gentle pace on the tredmill or bike. Maybe Lindsay is more one to warm-up indoors. However, there is certainly a problem, one way or the other in the way she prepares.

When I was at Wimby watching her practice, she had her trainer on court but she didn't appear to do anything only hold a racket and retreive some balls for Lindsay and Adam.....(mmmm, lovely Adam :hearts: ).....where was I.....oh yes, so what's the point in Lindsay's trainer being on the practice court if they're not gonna do any stretches/warm-ups - she never even seemed to be offering advice on anything. But hey, what do I know?! ;)

No its not. Maria will take over the number 1 ranking week after next regardless of what Lindsay does. She dosen't even have to play this week to get it. So Lindsay will be the number 2 seed for the US open. But look it this way she was the no 2 seed when she won two of three slams. It might be an omen. But Lindsay will get it back after the US open with all the tournments she playing she only defending champ in one and didn't play much tduring that time last year.

Lindsay had this same injury in 2000 and it took 6 to 8 weeks to recover from if its the same injury. Lindsay going into the US open 6 weeks rested may not be altogether bad thing if she given a soft draw for the first 4 rounds so can play herself into form. Let just hope its not a career ending injury though, I want her to go out on her own terms not to an injury.

These are all valid points! I cant understand why Lindsay doesnt warm up that much - well to our knowledge she doesnt seem to do much! I mean stretching/light jogging/sprints are all massively important before a game of any nature in sport....your body is much more prone to muscel strains and tears especially if you dont warm up properly 1st!

I mean Kim is the most flexible of all the tennis athletes in my opinion (spits etc), and so i can understand why she may not need to warm up as much.....but Lindsay hasn't exactley got the most flexible of body's....so I cant undestand this at all!

Lets make Andrew her new coach/trainer....im sure we'd have a couple of GS's in the bag then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andrew her leg is an on going thing. She plays with it wraped alot of the time to support a weak hip if you haven't noticed it always on the same leg. As for the back injury its just unforate timing. Lindsay doesn't get injured that much anymore but she does a good job of it when she does.

I've noticed all of the above. The leg is an ongoing thing. There should be ways to recognize and deal with it before it's a full blown issue that makes her retire from matches. That's what a trainer is for, and it's not happening.

If the back injury is same as in 2000 it is a muscle spasm which took her quite a time to get back, but she did and fitter if anything. Do hope she is fit enough to play New Haven but I don't want her to miss the US Open if at all possible. Hoepfully get the No 1 slot back which Maria will get next week.

Good Luck Lindsay, we are with you all the way :worship:

I think Lindsay's draw is fine and dandy as long as she's fine and dandy. Golovin is slumping and lost to Dulko in Toronto, Schnyder is tough but Lindsay can steam roller her. There's no doubt that Lindsay will have to be healthy to then beat Kuznetsova/Myskina and then Mauresmo/Dementieva but it's very doable. Myskina's playing well at the moment so I'd expect her in the semis which is good so Lindsay can get back to beating her.

!<blocparty>!
Aug 20th, 2005, 12:44 PM
Myskina is not playing well, and has an ankle injury. That match against Asagoe was just UGLY.

Demented is, well, Demented. Kuzzy is slumping and injured too, Momo is the biggest threat, but Linds owns her :)

Lindsay's first match I'd assume would be Tuesday, the tournement finishes on Saturday rather than Sunday for obviously reasons.

Kim, Lindsay, Maria and Amelie are all in the top 4 and can't draw each other before the semis and Lindsay and Maria won't draw each other til the final.

Maria is really only no 1 by default (lindsay's injuries and lack of tournament play) but unfortunately that is how it goes sometimes but I do hope Linds gets the No 1 back straight away as I feel she deserves too. Well, I read that Monica Seles is mentoring two players and she hasn't officially retired....one is Jelena Jankovic and the other has not been named by Monica herself, yet speculation has been bounced about the GM forum. So, it is possible that players can perhaps begin mentoring before they retire.....I don't know. It would be pretty cool if Lindsay is mentoring Angela :D

What Has She Done To Her Hair!!!

I think it is the same style from Wimby.....just a bit wet - as always! ;) The last time we saw pictures (from Stanford) Lindsay had long hair so I think maybe she's had a bit of a trim since then :D

Anyway, Davenport/Peschke is the night match tonight - which is annoying as I wanted to livescore it - and I'll give a big sigh of relief if she gets through.

There's livescoring at New Haven. http://pilotpentennis.ids-sports.com/scores/

I don't imagine it'd even be as early as midnight for UKers. Blake's match is before Lindsay's and starts at 7 [12 UK I think] so it'd be like 2AM.

2.Women's Singles: 2nd Round Lindsay Davenport (USA) [1] def. Kveta Peschke (CZE) Q6-4, 5-1 (http://pilotpentennis.ids-sports.com/stats/WS201.html)

does say defeated....and apparently on livescore.com it says 6/4 5/1 ret....lol, Peschke could have at least let Lindsay get 4 more points to complete the scoreline ;) j/k

:yeah: WELL DONE LINDSAY! :bounce:

Serve % didn't start high at around 55% but it did improve to 61% overall! I expected this, shows some rusty edges which can be ironed out.

5 ACES :yeah:

but

6 Double Faults  which immediately 'cancels' out those shinning Aces!

No net approaches either  she's been doing so well in the net too.....oh well :D

Some great % won on 1st serves. When she got in the first serve in the first set, she won 88% of the points, then in the second set that rose to 90%!!!!!

Just a couple of rusty patches, but overall it seems like a fairly solid performance for her first real match back. Hopefully she can push this momentum through.

Go Lindsay!

Davenport marks return with win

Latest results
Lindsay Davenport marked her return to action with a routine 6-4 6-1 victory over Kveta Peschke at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven.
She had not completed a match since Wimbledon because of a back injury, but made short work of her Czech opponent.

Davenport said: "I was actually scared of going out. The last time I did, I stayed a few minutes on court and went home - but my back felt fine.

"I didn't play my best, but I wasn't expecting to."

She added: "It was close to seven or eight weeks since I hadn't played a tournament. I knew I was going to be rusty.

"I was just a little unsure of my footwork but nothing physically was holding me back.

"I was a little bit nervous. I was anxious to get the match over with. I wasn't too happy when the match was scheduled at night."

Davenport is joined in the quarter-finals by Elena Dementieva who cruised to victory over fellow Russian Vera Douchevina.

Douchevina rallied in the second set but still went down 6-2 6-4.

Russian fifth seed Nadia Petrova has pulled out of the tournament with a strained pectoral muscle and will be replaced by lucky-loser Jie Zheng, who will face Jamea Jackson.

Petrova's injury is the same one that prompted her to retire while trailing France's Amelie Mauresmo in the third set of a quarter-final match in Toronto last week.

I think her back may still be hamperign her, as shses seemed to play with caution today...didnt look like she was moving free and easy....I hope everything is ok with it.

Lindsay Davenport is one win away from regaining the world number one ranking after beating Daniela Hantuchova at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven.

The American, who lost top spot to Maria Sharapova on Monday after two months out with a back injury, came through 6-2 7-6 (7-5).

France's second seed Amelie Mauresmo eased past Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3 6-2 of Germany.

But fourth seed Elena Dementieva fell to Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-3.

Davenport will next play Russian Anna Chakvetadze, who beat Zheng Jie of China 6-4 6-4.

The American trailed Hantuchova 3-0 in the second set before winning five straight games, then lost her serve, but saved a break point at 6-5 to force a tie-break.

"(My serve) is one of my biggest weapons," she said. "I'm not scared that it's gone away.

"It would be wrong of me to expect I can come back after seven or eight weeks and be perfect."

I was at the match, and it's clear that Lindsay is still rusty. But, I'm very glad that she came back from 5-6 15-40 to win the second set. Good stuff there, two unreturnables.

Anna Tchakvetadze can be a difficult player to beat, but if Lindsay plays even like she did today, it should be winnable... Let's not forget, Dani is probably playing her best tennis since 2003.

Agreed about the Dani's tennis. Yes Lindsay is still rusty but I think her chances of getting into the final pretty good. Just hope the back isn't bothering her. You never can tell with this type of injury;)

Elldee

Apparently Chakvetadze double faulted a lot [about the same as Lindsay ;)] and her serve was broken a lot in a topsy turvy match so hopefully we'll be okay. Chakvetadze has been really close to upsetting a [slumping] Kuznetsova and a [injured] Sharapova so it is a realistic threat.

Er, so, she is no bitch because she keeps her focus? :retard: I'm a total bitch, and am focused all the time. And anyway, Dani is a total bitch, if you have been to ANY tournaments with her in (which, I doubt very much) you will know that she ignnores ALL her fans who want autographs. And no, it she wasn't having a bad day, she was in Eastbourne for 2 days, I saw her at Wimbledon and my friends who go the the Sydney international every year have said she always ignores everyone, too. :)

Oh yeah, the only way she is going to turn heads tonight if Lindsay is playing like Serena, or if she walks onto court naked, or whatever.

Amelie's been taken to three sets but is up 5-2 in the third. I'm pretty happy that she won't play Medina Garrigues because they'll play next week and I don't want them to play twice. Momo is cool. She's a great person, and when she's aggressive, her game can be great to watch. But 70% of the time, she goes into this passive, defensive crap, and it's horrible to watch.

noooo i didnt mean us!!! i meant Lindsay thrashing her! Amelie seems like a nice girl, not really a fan, but shes better than a lot of the top 10!

yeah, I heard someone shout that and my first thought was that it was Andrew ;)

Will listen to that audio later :D

Well done Lindsay! I rushed to finish work an hour early today so I could see the match - I wasn't meant to have been in anyway but I had to cover for 4 people because the supervisor gave them all the day off.....so I ran a whole department mysel - so I'm tired....but very happy because I got home in time for Lindsay thrashing Momo...

....though the match was somewhat ugly at times ;)

Yay.

Loving her last two serice games, especially the penultimate one....4 winners. Crunching FH, amazing lunge volleying, fabulous running pass and, oh, another winner :) (BH DTL) Then, serving for the match is was like, two winners, DF, couple of forced errors and, title :)

HEHE - yep Lindsay played great in those last couple of service games....that's the Lindsay we're used to :D

yeah, her last service games was great :bounce: but in first set she was only 50% of 1st service

Andrew..

No, I was not the said shouter. One, I am not rude or classless. Two, my seats were better than his.

Lindsay Davenport. New Haven CHAMPION. It has quite a ring to it. Graf, Williams, Capriati, Bovina, DAVENPORT.

Yeah, Lindsay totally sensed Amelie was beginning to play better and the tide could turn. I loved the fact that Lindsay was working the rallies and winning the points behind her second serve. If she plays like she didn't in her last two service games at the open she can do very well... her return game needs to improve though.

ETA: The audio page I posted up there has a post-final interview too.

awesome match, apart from when she went to sleep. Nice clean shots and she seems confident in herself again. Roll on USO..thing is Lindsays still going to improve upon yesterday.

I dont get Amelie though. Shes such a great player, but just has the perfect game for Lindsay. Maybe if she had a new coach they could work with the cack that she feeds back to Lindsay on her first serve. It sets Lindsay up for the volley SO well every time.

But yay title 48!!!

Its great Lindsay won and all but she still thinks she play better. She's just waxed the world number 3 6-4 6-4 and if she plays better than that its scary for anyone who has to play her. Look out US open. back to where she belongs too.
world number 1 too.

Just aswell she held on to the trophy though. For those of you who don't know what on earth I'm talking about. Lindsay won the pre french open tournment in Stasboug in 1995 and dropped the winner tropy and it shattered as it was crystal. It was along time coming so Lindsay really wanted that trophy.

I had a nice spin on this match if Lindsay had lost... Lindsay lost the Sydney final to Amelie in 2000 and went on to win the Australian Open so hopefully the same would have happened with New Haven/US Open. Oh well, I'm very glad she won... we needed a new title!
