View Full Version : Does Venus and Serena really want it????

Oct 18th, 2001, 10:16 PM
Let me start by saying that I love Venus and Serena. But it has become apparent in the past year that perhaps V & S's ultimate goal is not to become number 1 & 2 in the world, but just to play a few tourneys, post some good results (o.k. great) and continue to play part time. The fact is they make more money each year from product endorsements than through prize money. But of course the two go hand and hand, i.e. you don't get endorsements by being ranked #75 in the world, but by being at or near the top. What has got me wondering is why in the past year has Venus not just gone for it and gotten to #1. Before the French Open, I think she was within 700 points of Hingis and the number #1 and just let the opportunity roll right by her. Now, this fall the same thing, she had a great summer defending 4 of her 5 titles from last year and is still ranked #4 in the world.

Is it me or does anyone else out there believe that being number 1 & 2 in the world mean very little to V & S. I think Venus knows that if she gets to #1 then the pressure is on to stay #1, which means playing in more that 13 or 14 tourneys in a year, but perhaps playing tennis full time, like the other players in the top ten. Look at Serena she played in 9 tourneys half as many as most players in the top 100 and is still in the top 10 and can beat anyone on tour.

Well, as far as I know last year Venus would have loved very much to become #1, and I mean, who doesnīt want to become #1? You wouldnīt? I donīt think so. If she would have wanted it so much she would have gotten it, that is true. But she wants it very much, I am sure of that.

I am sure they wonīt let this for a long time. They want it now more than anything. But Jenny baby has it, yeah!

I know they want it.. In fact it is obvious to me that they are focused more than ever.

go Serena and Venus.

I think they want it!

And I think they are the best players in WTA. Serena is a Top Ten player with just 9 tournaments and Venus just played 13 and she is the player who leads Money prizes.

I think they will get it next year, for sure.

I expect that Venus will get it within the next 8 months or so before Wimbledon.

Serena can get up there if she plays more which remains to be seen.

Regardless, i dont think we've seen the last all-Williams final at a slam, rankings be damned.

Oct 19th, 2001, 09:55 AM
Of course they don't want it, they'd have done it by now if they cared. What I don't understand is why Venus fans get so het up about the rankings. Slams are what really matters, and Venus has two of them this year. I'm sure that's how she looks at it.

If I were Venus, I wouldn't give a damn about the rankings either.

Unless someone here knows them personally I don't know that any one of us can speak with any certainty as to what they want. I have some doubts however as to whether Venus can get it. I'm not sure that her wrists and knees can hold up to having to play 17 tournies each year. She suffers a whole lot from just playing 10 tournies. Her wrists are always taped, and by the 6th tourny of the year, her knees frequently were too. Her style of tennis is extremely hard on the body and she seems to have a muscled but delicate system. I'm not sure that her body can hold up to the battering required to win 17 tournies. Venus is the perfect example of how the best player will not necessarily ever be the top-ranked.

As for Serena, I can't see her being #1 in 2002 either bec she seems to avoid traveling. And she won't be able to play 17 tournies without getting on a plane!

I am sure that Venus wants it she has said so. I completely supported Venus's decision not to come to Europe. Venus is probably better known and more recgnisable than either Capriati and Jenniffer and she seems to generate a lot of attention to herself and to the tournament whenever she plays. If I was Venus I too would have felt very vulnerable and would have chosen to sit at home and say too bad - there will be another chance.

Secondly, I think that both girls put more value to leading a balanced life than to being #1. Venus believes that she is the best player out there. Does Capriati or did Hingis(recently). She also likes to pay ample attention to her spritual and creative side of her not to mention her family. In time she will get it. She is well within striking distance.

What player on the tour doesn't want to be #1?

I've come to realize that it doesn't matter if Venus becomes #1 in the rankings or not. She will certainly be remembered in years to come because she's such a great player. She's done so much for tennis, along with her baby sis'. Years from now, when people think about tennis, they'll think about the Williams Sisters and their great contributions to the sport. If they never become #1,#2, or whatever, people will know in their hearts that they should have. Venus is clearly the best out there right now, and Serena is not too far behind.

Oct 20th, 2001, 10:59 AM
They're capable but it would such be a disappointment if they never will.

There were great players who have not reached the top ranking and Venus doesn't deserve to be in this category IMO.

Getting the top ranking is EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

I think they don't want it badly. Even I am not a fans, I am feeling a bit disappointed coz with their ability, they could do it, they really should play more. Also I am bad, I don't want Jennifer to stay on top too long .

In response to what someone wrote earlier, you don't have to know Venus and Serena personally to know that they don't care about the rankings and being Number 1 and 2. Another PERFECT example is Venus pulling out of Linz (with final points to defend). I just don't find it credible anymore any excuse that comes from V & S lips when it comes to pulling out of tournaments. And I say this being one of the biggest, if not the biggest Williams Sisters fans. It will be interesting to see what excuse both V & S will use to pull out of the year end championship. I think Venus will stick with her current "excuse" of having "irritated" her left wrist (yea, right, by giving the bird to the WTA tour) and I think Serena will have an 'injury" by this Thursday and will also pull out. I think part of the "Master Plan" is to drive up demand for the Sisters by having them play a limited-fixed schedule, in an attempt to drive up their "promotional fee" for attending events. Any thoughts?

Oct 22nd, 2001, 04:50 PM
I find it hard to believe that someone calling themselves "one of the biggest, if not the biggest fan of the Williams sisters" could proceed to call them liars, fakers, and having a "Master Plan" to promote themselves by driving up demand for their appearance. How can a Venus and Serena "fan" think these two women are that devious. Venus and Serena would do well to lose "fans" like this.

Dear Deira,

GET OVER YOURSELF. I am a fan and just because I question or criticize some of the things they do and say doesn't make me any less of a fan. While I don't consider myself a BLIND WORSHIPPER like yourself, I do love the Sisters. All I'm saying is that the way the WTA tour is set up, it forces players, including the Sisters, to sometimes be creative when they don't feel like playing in tournaments. Can you, as such a BLIND FOLLOWER of the Sisters list ALL of the tournaments that they have pulled out of this year alone? List them. I dare you. As a Venus and Serena fan, it's very disappointing and frustrating following their schedules because I get so let down when they pull out of tournaments. I LOVE watching them play. That's all I'm saying, it was you who called them liars.

No supremeross, I will not get over myself 'cause I love me some me But as to the matter at hand, you didn't question or criticize Venus and Serena for what they do. You used conjecture as to what you think they might be doing. Specifically, you implied that their injuries are nothing but lies and camouflage, and that their real plan is to manipulate the WTA tour by limiting their play in order to "drive up their promotional fee". With fans like you Venus and Serena don't need the haters

From the Liberal Use of the Word Forced Dept.:
The WTA announced over the weekend that Venus Williams was forced to withdraw from Linz because of "wrist irritation." We've said it before: If the Williams sisters want to play a reduced schedule, particularly in these dicey political times, all power to them. But this business of giving a commitment and then withdrawing on the eve of an event -- after sponsors, television rights holders and ticket buyers have ponied up serious coin -- does everyone involved a disservice. ...

Yes, Deira- Please get over yourself! Because I sure have. The whole point of this site and particular this thread is to share thoughts and opinions, nothing that you or I say is law, just OPINIONS. If you don't care for mine, whatever, move on. But I AM the BIGGEST VENUS and SERENA FAN and if I want to speculate and guess and sometimes criticize the SISTERS, it makes me no less a fan.

Oct 23rd, 2001, 03:20 PM
Supremeross, maybe you should do yourself and V & S a huge favor and dismiss yourself as "THE BIGGEST VENUS AND SERENA FAN". They really don't need you discrediting them with your speculations everytime they pull out. I am also a big fan of the sisters, and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it seems to bother you, when they pull out of tourneys. I realize that they are injury prone, and not playing in some tourneys that they committed to comes with the territory. I don't get angry or depressed and come up with silly ideas as to the so called REAL REASON they're not playing. As a fan, if they say "family matters", "wrist irritation", "knee tendonitis", or whatever else, I take it at face value. I don't feel that they have a reason to lie. It's their careers. There's no since in speculating or getting upset. As a fan, there's nothing that you can do about it, except wait until the next time they play and cheer them on. It is uneccesary to accuse them of deception and manipulation because they pull out of tourneys.

Well all Hail to Hail-Venus. Thanks for your two cents, I'll be sure to pass it along to the first homeless man I see, but I'm sure he'll have just as much use for it as I do.

Oct 23rd, 2001, 08:01 PM
If Venus pulls out but Serena plays-it won't look so bad. But if BOTH bag Munich, then it looks really premeditated. That would be 3 years in a row that Serena skipped the year end championships. For the sake of Munich and the sisters, lets hope at least one(or both ) shows up.

Oct 24th, 2001, 01:52 AM
How so, Rollo? Most of the time people complain that Venus and Serena don't play in the same tourneys because they don't want to face each other ... which is true and they have been honest enough to admit it. You're saying if one plays and not the other then it's okay or else they'll look bad! Where is the premeditation ... just because they're sisters? How is it going to look "bad" if they don't play? People find conspiracy theories in almost everything the Williams sisters do, whether they play or not. All types of evil allegations (personal and otherwise) are leveled at them, even by some so-called fans like sumpremeross. If one, the other, or both decide not playing is in their best interst, health-wise or whatever, it's their decision to make. Sure tennis fans want them to play, but it's up to them and they don't deserve to be second-guessed everytime they cite an injury or decide they won't play ... why, because very few other players are subjected to the same type of criticism.

Hey Rollo!!!

Oct 24th, 2001, 01:19 PM
Venus and Serena get a grief because they're siblings on the tour. People are always judging one by the other. If they pull out, they pull out. If it's ok with WTA, then why isn't it ok for you? They work for WTA, not you. They don't have to answer to you when they pull out of tournaments, yet you always expect some sort of explaination other than what they've given to the tour directors. Well, keep waiting, because you're never going to get one.

I think Serena wants the number one and wants to keep it forever.

I think venus wants the grandslams title more than number one.

Serena has been demonstrating she wants it, and both know if you win (Tier 1 & 2's) the ranking will take care of it'self. I think Venus has needed a little more push, a way to challenge and make it interesting for herself. And at this point beating lil sis is that drive. No longer just being number 2 is just the wake up call she needed. Serena has been the teacher the last year. Watch for the Return of the Jedi. LOL

This thread is hilarious ! I was reading it and I was like " what the heck is going on here??" and then I realized that it was started in 10/01!!

So funny the person who said that Serena didn't want to be #1 because she only wanted to play about 13 tournies per year and didn't want to travel!! :-) so here she is, traveling all over the place, and firmly #1 with only about 13 tournies under her belt.

But, interesting that some of the Venus "predictions" were more on target..

anywya, clearly Serena loves being #1 and will stay there for a while. as for Venus, she wants those slams, baby!

Jan 29th, 2003, 04:55 PM
Most amusing to me is the fact that the Williams' have changed the whole concept of being number 1 & 2...

You DON'T have to play 17+ tournaments a year. You don't have to play more than 14!!!

All you have to do is win. Win the tourneys you enter and rack up the points.

It's going to be a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time before anybody catches up to either Serena or Venus - there's, what 2,000 - 3,000 points between them and Kim?

what i said at that point in time was relevant at that point in time. that was in 2001. a LOT have changed and happened since. you can't take people's words out of one context and interpret them in another.

for instance that Sisters have since hired a trainer. they didn't have one back then and Venus' injuries were therefore more common. she still wears the protective knee wrap but not bec she injured but to prevent same. and Serena now travels the globe. she didn't then. for example, back then she did not go back to France to defend her Open de Gaz title. now she would. so things have changed. grow up people.

OK that's it. i'm off this board until RG. :wavey: :wavey: do please stop calling my name so i have no reason to come back (except occasionally for the Windies thread in Non-Tennis of course)...:p
