Maria Sharapova will be 15th world's #1 in tennis history (WTA ranking system already exist 30 years). Only Austin, Graf, Seles and Hingis award #1 status before '18 (younger than MaSha).

Before Maria Sharapova (August 15, 2005) we have only 14 tennis "queens" so far:
1. Chris Evert (November 3, 1975 ), 2. Martina Navratilova (July 10, 1978 ), 3. Tracy Austin (April 7, 1980 ), 4. Steffi Graf (August 17, 1987 ), 5. Monica Seles (March 11, 1991 ), 6. Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (February 6, 1995 ), 7. Martina Hingis (March 31, 1997 ), 8. Lindsay Davenport (October 12, 1998 ), 9. Jennifer Capriati (October 15, 2001 ), 10. Venus Williams (February 25, 2002 ), 11. Serena Williams (July 8, 2002 ), 12. Kim Clijsters (August 11, 2003 ), 13. Justin Henin-Hardenne (October 20, 2003) and 14. Amelie Mauresmo (September 13, 2004).

But all this queens dont have equal control #1 status in her career:

WEEKS AT #1:

377 Steffi Graf
331 Martina Navratilova
262 Chris Evert
209 Martina Hingis
178 Monica Seles
82 Lindsay Davenport*
57 Serena Williams*
45 Justine Henin-Hardenne*
22 Tracy Austin
17 Jennifer Capriati*
12 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
12 Kim Clijsters*
11 Venus Williams*
5 Amelie Mauresmo*

*-still active players

So, what do you think, is she deserve #1 or not and how long MaSha keep #1 status this year, and how many weeks at #1 you expect of she in her career.
And what will be her most dangerous problem to keep (or back, in future) this #1 status - Henin, Davenport, Clijsters, Serena, Venus, Mauresmo, some new, or maybe injury problems or her "celebrity" status?

Please do not jinx Maria by counting her chickens before they hatch. She needs at least a semi-final - and possibly a final - at Los Angeles to be #1 on 15th August.

More precisely, she needs to gain more than 115 ranking-points this week to displace her 17th-best result (US Open 2004: 92 points) and close the 23-point gap between herself and Lindsay Davenport. Whether she needs to reach the final, or just the semi-finals, depends on the rankings of the opponents she beats.

Best-case scenario (highest-ranked and nicest opponents!):
2r: Maria Kirilenko (#52): +8, total 25+8 = 33
3r: Anna Chakvetadze (#31): +15, total 49+8+15 = 72
qf: Daniela Hantuchová (#22): +23, total 88+8+15+23 = 134
sf: Maria becomes #1 no matter what happens

Worst-case scenario:
2r: Maria Kirilenko (#52): +8, total 25+8 = 33
3r: Iveta Benešová (#51): +8, total 49+8+8 = 65
qf: Kataryna Bondarenko (#186): +2, total 88+8+8+2 = 106
sf: Sun,Tian Tian (#202): +2, total 137+8+8+2+2 = 157
f: Maria becomes #1 no matter what happens

If she fails to secure the #1 ranking this week, she could get it on 22nd August when Davenport's 175 points for winning Cincinnati 2004 come off. However, it's also possible that Davenport could make a late entry into Toronto, and keep Maria off the #1 spot indefinitely.

Maria is a true phenom. To keep winning the way she does, at every tournament, at her age, is spectacular.
There aren't enough compliments to give her.

This is so hard to do, to reach #1 at 18 & 3 months. And Maria has so many other opportunities.
Movies, tv, all kinds of stuff. But she keeps winning matches, no matter what the distractions.

I know that, but chances for 15.august against 22.august (new WTA#1 historical date) is about 80:20, so i already open this thread, because i be sure that all this fact (who be #1 in wta history, when and how long) is very interesting RIGHT NOW. In worse case (if MaSha dont get 115pts in LA), i will edit 22. august instead 15. august...

I know this isn't about Maria but I have to mention this, sorry guys.

I never realised just how amazing Martina Hingis really was (is I guess). I mean she is the reason I started watching (& loving) tennis in the 1st place and I love her to bits but I was young (still am I suppose) and didn't follow tennis as much as I do now so I never really realised just how much she did acheive in the 5-6 years she was playing on the tour for. If only injury didn't plague her and she still had passion to play, looking at those stats, she could've bi-passed any other player in history. Now I'm just sadder that she doesn't play anymore (except for the WTT):sad::sad:!!!

I hope that MaSha is not damned for #1 like Anna K. for her first tournament wins.

So... i unfortunately must change date (last time, i hope).

Agree with you about most everything about Martina Hingis, but other than injuries, she was simply too small for her time. She was arguably more talented than the players who began to beat her after that amazing 1997 season, but once the more powerful players began balancing their errors-to-winners ratios, it was pretty much over. Hingis did not have any single weapon, and had to rely on her feet and guile to win matches. Justine Henin-Hardenne is pretty much the same player, but Justine at least has a powerful serve (for her size) and an amazing backhand. And just plain tougher physically.

I too, miss Hingis. She was born in the wrong era, she really should have battled the 70's and early 80's greats with a wooden racket. She was a wizard.

Her greatest flaw as a person, her inability to make tactful answers during interviews, and her constant needling and jabbing at the pretenders to her throne (at the time), was also her greatest virtue. She was blunt, which was both good and bad. If you were a Venus Williams fan in 1997-99, you hated Hingis for that bluntness. but if you favor straightforward talk over the fakery that goes around tennis interviews, you'd love Hingis.

and I actually think she's prettier than most people think. of course, when you play doubles with Miss Kournikova, you'd look like chopped liver.

What really pisses me off is that news organizations, whether mainstream (e.g. CNN) or sports, still refer to her as a "starlet". You'd think people in that business would have better word selection skills.

She's not a starlet. She's a star. Big difference.

I don't mind it when people refer to her as a starlet; she's still incredibly young, nearly a child. I just think, if this is what she achieves as a starlet, what's she gonna be like as a star!
