Apr 17th, 2002, 12:06 AM
Warm Salutations Selestials!

Edit: Okay! The messages are all printed (except a for a couple *ahem* non-Selestial ones) and in a manilla envelope in my bag. Thanks for writing such great letters, I'll be proud to be delivering them for you! :)

Btw, I'll be e-mailing updates to "Seles" (signal permitting) from Charlotte...so hopefully you'll be kept up-to-date. Pray for sunshine...the forecast is not the greatest.

I'll try to get some good pics, --I'm gonna get some help posting them for you. :)

Talk to you when I return!

Monica you are my idol. I am only 13 but I think you are the greatest athlete because not only are you the best, but unlike the Williams or Kournikova, you are very nice to other players and your fans. I love your grunt (never ever change it please). I hope you can play in Germany some day as I am sure they would love to see you again. I remember thinking that I would never go back to Florida again after something really bad and disgraceful happened to me there, but I now go there regularly. It is great to not have all that fear anymore. But obviously I understand why you don't go back, and I think whatever you decide to do is the best decision.

(In the name of the father and of the daughter and of the holy groundstrokes. Ah- Yee!):) :wavey:

Hi earthcrystal, you're so kind. Thank you very much for giving us a chance to contact Monica. It seems you and Monica are friends, aren't you? :)

My message for Monica: (I wrote it in my native language, I guess Monica still speaks yugoslavian/serbian/croatian :))

Najdraza Monica,

Jednu sancu sam propustio i puno zazalio. A to kad si igrala exibicuju u Brnu protiv Karine Habsudove.

Zelim ti puno srece u tenisu i privatnom zivotu, puno zdravlja, ljubavi i uspjeha.

Zlatko Teskeredzic

Monica, my dear:
Ever since I was 14, you've been my inspiration. I admired your youth and determination. We grew up together, except I only knew you on television. I dreamed of the day to see you play in person and to maybe have the chance to meet you, if only to say hello.

Well, my dream was realized in Chicago, Feb 1993. At the Virginia Slims of Chicago. You played a very tough 3 setter against Magdalena Grzybowska. I admired your resolve in coming back from being a break down when the crowd wasn't really cheering you on (silly crowd anyway!). I ran to courtside just behind the retaining wall after your match and asked you for your autograph. You said that you'd sign after your doubles match, which was up next. You were playing with Lindsay Davenport. It was snowing out, and I had a 2 hour drive ahead of me. You graciously came right over and signed my book. I was so speachless that you would be so considerate. I wept with joy everytime I looked at that program. It was my first time ever seeing a WTA event. You won the title, beating Martina Navratilova 4.6 6.3 6.2

In 96 I had the chance to see you again in Chicago. This time at the Ameritech Cup. I showed you my tatoo and my license plate from my car (Seles4). We chatted one on one there at courtside for about 5 minutes or so. You took the time to speak to me. You posed with me for a picture. I will always cherish that photo.

Then, for my birthday this year I booked a trip to London & Paris. I booked it in Nov 2001 for Feb 2002. I didn't even think of the Open Gaz de France at that time, but when I saw your name on the entry list, I was the happiest I'd been in years. I was going to see you again! For the 3rd time. I was able to watch 3 of your matches and had really great seats. Seeing you play with such vigor and energy really made that part of trip the highlight.

So, I guess, I just wanted to say thank you for being you. Thank you for being so kind, so human, and so approachable. You shine like a light beaconing upon us all. Thank you for your humanity. Thank you for your spirit. Thank you for being you.

earthcrystal, you are one class act!:) Here's wishing you success in meeting Seles again...

Can't think of anything to add to the lovely thoughts already expressed...!

Selestials are the best (as is Monica!)!

Apr 20th, 2002, 08:25 AM
Thanks for all the kind words, friends. But really, it's my pleasure to do this because I know that so many of you really wish you could tell her how she's touched your lives, inspired you, etc...and either have never met her, or became tongue-tied, or didn't have time to say everything you'd like to.

I'm really, really fortunate. I gave her a card expressing my admiration for her courage, telling her what an inspiration she is, (etc) the first time I went to see her in L.A. in '97. She thanked me for the card again, when she saw me courtside at the next match. Since that time, she's always greeted me like a friend and taken time to talk to me at some length, whenever I've seen her in again (in L.A., Kansas, Oklahoma, NY...) over the past 5 years. Which brings me to my other reason for doing this.

Monica appreciates her fans and, I believe, is truly touched by their support and caring for her. And in the spirit of "giving back to her" I'm more than happy to hand-deliver these messages. I love the image of her sitting down (in her hotel room or on a plane) and reading these sentiments (and feeling the love) from all over the world.

Sorry for being so long-winded. :o But I just wanted to clarify that while this is my gift to you, it is also your gift to her...and in a sense, my gift to her too.

Which makes me happy all the way around.

My dearest Monica,

I'm a 16 year old boy from the Netherlands and you biggest fan! I love your game, your grunts, your groundstrokes, your simpathy, your smile, your outfits...and I could go on and on and on! But basically I'm just saying that I love you and that you're one of the greatest persons on this world, and I really mean that.

I became a fan of you when I was like 12 years old. I can remember that my mom was watching tennis on TV and said to me that I should take a look ''at that grunting girl" and I did. And boy, I was so impressed! I loved you, your game and smile emmediately! You could say it was love a first sight! For my birthday I got your book "From Fear To Victory" (the Dutch translation) and a couple of years later (in 1999), I got a ticket to Wimbledon, to see you. We had a ticket for the grave yard court, and you had to play Weingartner on...court number 1! So I had a big problem...At the time you had to play your match, I went to court number 1 and ask the guard if I could you take one little look. He said yes. And then I walked up the stairs and saw you warming up against Weingartner. I will never forget that moment ever! It's so strange to see your idol for the first time in real life! My mom asked the guard if I could see your match "because my son is her biggest fan ever!" And then he said to magical words: ''Well, ok then. He can sit here and watch the first set. Then he'll have to leave." I was so glad! So I sat down and watched the first set, which was only 13 minutes long because you won it 6-0. And then I had to leave...I waited outside the court for you, but you left the stadium somewhere else. The whole day I tried to find you, but sadly you were gone. I waited at the players lounge for you to show up, but you didn't. I planned to give my letter for you to Mary Joe Fernandez, but just when she was planning to go outside, she walked inside again because she forget something. Strangely, she never came back! So at the end of the day I gave my letter to a female, black guard at the entrace to the players lounge. She said that she would give it to you. So, I really hope that you got my letter back then. If not: Ask for it at Wimbledon this year :)!

Monica, I wish you all the best for the year 2002 (and after that of course) and I hope you'll live a happy, injury-free-life forever. Say hello to your Mom, Zoltan, Ariel, and Mike Sell for me, ok?

I love you Monica!

Good luck to you Monica at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open. I'm very happy to see the tour Championships moved to Los Angeles, they righted a wrong. Keep working hard and bringing home those trophies, but if your foot becomes a problem, don't try and tough it out. Missing 1 or 2 tournaments is a lot better than missing months.

Apr 20th, 2002, 03:47 PM
Can't believe I almost missed this ... ...

Dear Monica,

I have been a fan of yours for several years now in London, England (Wimbledon in fact !).

Although I've read your book, I still can't even begin to imagine what strength and courage it took for you to return to tennis in 1995 but as one of your fans I can only say that I have the highest respect for you and I am thrilled that I still have the opportunity to see you play.

I wish you the best of luck with all the matches you play and I know that if you continue to play the game with the determination and graciousness that have made you such a great champion that you will reap great rewards for as long as you choose to play the game. When you decide to retire, please know that all your fans support you and will always be happy if you are happy.

Best wishes to you in the future, on whatever paths you choose
to follow,

Thanks earthcrystal :hearts: - you are an  .

Dear Monica,
I have been a fan of yours since the time I started playing tennis around three years ago. It was the 1998 French Open Final when I first watched tennis. Seeing you play was the begining of my love for the game. You are the reason I even started playing. After the match was over I went outside to play tennis and from that point on I found my sport. For eight years I had played baseball but I never really enjoyed it. Once I picked up that racquet I was a different person and I never put it down. I have been working hard ever since and now I am one of the better players in Michigan. I owe it all to you. Watching you throughout the years has taught me to believe in myself and the intensity in your eyes remains in my heart everytime I walk onto the court. Thanks for everything!! Good Luck and continue to believe in yourself like you have taught me because you are the best in the world!!!!!

Love Chris

I have been a fan of yours for a very long time and I plan to attend the Rogers AT&T cup in Montreal. I hope to see you there.
I also have to say that I started to play tennis because of you and I wanted to thank you for that. You helped me find a sport that I enjoy.

Hello Monica

My name is Grant and im 23 years old and live in Cape Town, South Africa.

I have been a very big fan of yours for a long time now and Im so grateful and privileged to be able to write this to you and for you to read it.

The first time I really started to take notice of you was when you won your first French Open final against Steffi Graf. I was in total awe of your game and your intensity and I have loved you ever since.

your book...."from fear to victory" - i have read it so many times and it really inspires me about the true meaning of courage and dtermination and the power of the human spirit - and i thank you for that.

i practise and play with one of the top junior girls in south africa who is 15 now. i gave her your book to read and she is completely in amazement of you and wants to be exactly like you (although she has a 1 handed forehand!!! lol ) - your book has inspired her so much more to achieve all her goals for her own tennis career now :-)

good luck for the rest of your career monica - one that is so brilliant and incredible. however, for me, just seeing you stepping out on court makes me feel so happy.

if i could criticize you on one thing monica - it would be this......could you please try and stop making me soooooo nervous everytime you play!!! lol even if you are winning 6-0, 5-0, 40-0....i still feel as though im going to fall on the floor and faint from nerves!!!!!!

all the best monica - stay exactly as you are.

take care
Grant McKinney

Thank you so much, ec. :)

Dear Monica:

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I want to let you know the impact that you have on me. I have been watching you since the Virginia Slims of Houston in 1988- as a 14 year old and there has never been another tennis player whose career I follow so closely. There is just no other player who is such a warrior and has such a never-say-die attitude. But it is really your disposition that I have come to love. You are such a positive role model and carry yourself with the utmost class, pride, and competitveness. Your heart of a lion on the court turns into the heart of a child as soon as the match is over. Your interviews are nothing short of a delight. I met you each of the past two years at WTT in the Hamptons, NY and you were nice enough to take a picture with me on each occasion. I will treasure the years left that you have on tour and I hope that you do, too. It has been a privilege that you have let us into your life, at least partly, for the past 15 years.

God Bless You!

Justin B.

Dear Monica,

like most of the writers of these messages I'm a big fan of you since years (in fact more than 13 years now). Being from Germany I am ashamed of what happened to you in my country and very sorry that you won't play here again. But it is your decision and I think I can understand it (as much as this is possible for someone who's knowledge on you is based on media releases...) Those year of WTA-tennis without you were in a way lost years, I missed to see (and hear) you on TV.
When you started on the tour I liked your fighting spirit and your style of game. Nowadays I like it best when you smile after winning a match/tournament because this shows that you are happy with your life and your profession again.
I wish you all the best in life and in tennis. Please go on playing as long as you feel good while doing it. We deeply enjoy to watch you.

wave alias Heike from Stuttgart.

Well i just forgot to let u know that you are my idol!!!!......i play tennis too, and you are the reason why i began to play tennis!!!
Im from Berlin-Germany, and as i first watched you on TV, i drove my parents nuts, cuz i also wanted to play tennis. But im still learning from your game and it is sooooo much joy for me to watch you!!!.....You are an inspiration for me, and when i watch your matches on TV, i can still see the fire in your eyes, and i learn sooooo much from you!!! Thank you soooooo much for beeing yourself Monica!!! You are a role model for everyone, and u gave the people the best moments in tennis!!!.....without you tennis wouldnt be the same!!!
Also thanks a lot for sharing your feelings in your book with the whole world, you are such a strong person, and i admire your courage!!!
