I have waited for this match for ages. Her draw looks pretty compfortable untill the semi finals then you would perhaps expect her to play Mary Pierce or Elena D and Kim looks to be lurking in the final or Sveta. It is definatly a winnable tournament but there will be big hurdles to overcome. Good luck Masha its great to hae you back.

we can expect some nice matches in this tournament, Maria vs Maria, Sania Mirza, Anna, maybe a cool match up vs Zvonareva lol

Go Maria !!

2nd round: Kirilenko
3rd round: Chakvetadze
QF: Asagoe, or maybe Hantuchova if Zvonareva withdraws

Maria needs to meet those players if she wants to be number one before the SF

===================
JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN (Los Angeles, California, hard, WTA Tier II)
===================

(1r) MARIA SHARAPOVA [1] bye
(2r) MARIA SHARAPOVA [1] v ((1r) Maria Kirilenko v Marissa Irvin [WC])

The Super Maria Sisters have never met professionally in singles, but they did play each other in the semi-finals of Wimbledon 2002 Girls' Singles: Big Maria beat Little Maria 6-0 3-6 6-3. Big Maria went on to lose the final to Vera Douchevina, while Little Maria won the US Open 2002. How times change...

The third round also promises a mouthwatering match: ANNA CHAKVETADZE [16] (who has to get past Li,Na in the first round) or the winner of (1r) Sania Mirza v Iveta Benešová.

Then, I hope, a mouthwatering quarter-final with DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [9] (who was moved when VERA ZVONARËVA [7] withdrew with the left-ankle sprain she suffered at San Diego - a real blow to her, to the tournament, and to my fanship-interest in the tournament).

-----------------------
Maria's chance to be #1
-----------------------

The time for Maria to become world number one is at hand. As of 8th August, Lindsay Davenport has 4475 ranking-points while Maria has 4452.

Davenport is missing this tournament with a lower-back injury (Maria missed San Diego with a similar but less serious complaint), and if Davenport doesn't play next week either, Maria will overtake her on 22nd August when Davenport's 175 points for winning Cincinnati 2004 come off.

If Maria goes ahead and plays this tournament, she could well become number one on 15th August. Because the rankings only count a player's best 17 results, Maria needs a result worth more than 92 ranking-points to displace the US Open 2004, and hence needs a result worth more than 115 ranking-points to close the 23-point gap between herself and Davenport.

The full status of this tournament is Tier II (64) $585,000, so Maria gets the following ranking-points for losing in the following rounds:
* 2r (after a bye): 1 point
* 3r: 25 points
* qf: 49 points
* sf: 88 points
* f: 137 points
* champion: 195 points

And quality-points are available for beating players of the following rankings outside of the Grand Slams:
#1: +100 points
#2: +75 points
#3: +66 points
#4: +55 points
#5: +50 points
#6-10: +43 points
#11-16: +35 points
#17-25: +23 points
#26-35: +15 points
#36-50: +10 points
#51-75: +8 points
#76-120: +4 points
#121-250: +2 points
#251-500: +1 points

Best-case scenario (highest-ranked and nicest opponents!):
2r: Maria Kirilenko (#52): +8, total 25+8 = 33
3r: Anna Chakvetadze (#31): +15, total 49+8+15 = 72
qf: Daniela Hantuchová (#22): +23, total 88+8+15+23 = 134
sf: Maria becomes #1 no matter what happens

Worst-case scenario:
2r: Marissa Irvin (#96): +4, total 25+4 = 29
3r: Iveta Benešová (#51): +8, total 49+4+8 = 61
qf: Kataryna Bondarenko (#186): +2, total 88+4+8+2 = 102
sf: Sun,Tian Tian (#202): +2, total 137+4+8+2+2 = 153
f: Maria becomes #1 no matter what happens

Masha VS. Makiri

I think Maria, I mean Masha, will win. I heard of Makiri before, but haven't seen her play. Looks like I still won't be able to see her play. :(

Masha VS. Makiri

I think Maria, I mean Masha, will win. I heard of Makiri before, but haven't seen her play. Looks like I still won't be able to see her play. :(

They're both "Masha", which is a common diminutive of Maria in Russian. Some people think Masha is short for Maria Sharapova, but the word they're looking for is Mashara (two syllables for the surname, as in Makiri).

I saw Little Maria play in person at Birmingham 2004. For three games I was captivated by her all-court talent as she surged to a 3-0 lead against Roberta Vinci... but sadly she went off the boil and lost 6-4 6-3. I also watched her win the doubles-title with Big Maria. Little Maria has good volleys and great returns of serve.

I saw Little Maria play again at Birmingham 2005. She encountered little resistance in the first round against Yuliana Fedak (a match full of beauty), winning 6-3 6-2, but looked weak in losing 6-2 6-3 to the athletic and powerful Jamea Jackson. Sadly, the Super Maria Sisters surrendered their doubles-title in the first round.

Maria won in a very tight battle 4/6 6/4 7/5 and i think she has a pectoral strain or injury. Lets hope she can get the rust off for her next match and the injury is not too serious.

Aug 12th, 2005, 12:46 AM
I'm not happy right now, why was this match so difficult ?? was it because Maria is injured ?? was it because she is nervous ?? ( I doubt that ) or was Anna just so good ?? I can't wait to read the interview.....

As a Hantuchova fan, you would expect me to be happy with her getting a walkthough. But no.

I was really looking forward to seeing Dani play Maria - I like both players. I really do hope Maria gets well soon!

I think she really can win the US Open
