This year's Qualies for the JPMorgan Event were held at the
Seal Beach Tennis Club, which is about a 10 minute drive south
of Carson where the Home Depot Center (HDC) is located. The
main draw matches will be held at HDC beginning Monday night.
Wonder why they didn't start Monday morning? For the past two
years the Qualies for JPM were held at HDC, which is a facility
built for training and hosting professional tournaments. I went
down both years and photographed the Qualies. Apparently the
Qualies were not held at HDC because the X-Games were going on.
I did not take pictures today.

I attended today's (Sunday) matches only of the Qualies. The
Seal Beach Tennis center is a suitable site to hold the Qualies.
They used 2 courts on either side of the club house, which is
raised quite a bit above court level. There was a lot of shade
provided by an overhanging roof and by trees. I never had to
sit in the sun, which I most definitely would have had to do
at HDC where there is NO shade. It was nice having that club
house right there with the snackbar nearby. HDC doesn't have
snackbar nearby for the qualies. Also, the prices were very
reasonable. A Coke cost $1, whereas at the Acura Qualies a
week ago, we were charged $4.75 for Coke.

The one big problem with the Seal Beach site is that it is
right next to a major freeway. The traffic noise was very
loud and annoying on the 2 courts on the west side of the
clubhouse. It was a little bit better on the other side. We
could never hear the umpire introduce the players or say the
score. They were not using mics or electronic scoreboards.

The atmosphere was quite informal. There was no security and
players seemed quite comfortable mixing with the crowd. Saw
Bondarenko and Rodionova leaving for the evening with ice
packs taped to their legs. They both looked like they needed
about a week off, but I don't think that's going to happen.
Kat. had ice on both shins and was walking slowly. Anast.
had her bad knee iced and could barely walk at all. In fact
she was limping noticeably BEFORE her singles match today.

Arriving about an hour after the matches started I found a
seat in the shade facing the West courts. It looked like an
Asian invasion, with Tiantian Sun playing Seiko Okamoto on
the near court, and Janet Lee playing Aiko Nakamura on the
far court. Lee substituted for Jennifer Hopkins who never
showed.

Aiko kinda got a raw deal today. This match was supposed to
be played last yesterday. I believe they were hoping Hopkins
would show up (from where?). But she didn't, so they resche-
duled it for today. Hopkins was still on the schedule this
morning, but she never showed. So Lee stepped in. But this
forced Aiko to play both of her qualifying matches today,
which no one else had to do. Congrats to Aiko for winning
both of those matches. They should not make her play again
until Tuesday or Wednesday.

This was the first time I've seen Tiantian Sun. She's a
big, strong, girl compared to the other Asians. She has
powerful looking legs in particular. She was definitely
more powerful than Seiko, who seemed to be concentrating
on hitting to Tiantian's forehand. Seiko had more patience
than Tiantian. She would win the longer rallies. On clay
I'd pick Seiko to win, but not on hardcourts or grass.
Tiantian won fairly easily.

Next up on that court was Saori Obata (163) versus Kateryna
Bonderenko (195). There's not alot separating these girls
except that Kateryna has a pretty good first serve. Also
Kat. is a bit more aggresive with her groundstrokes. Despite
what the rankings say, Kat looked like the better player and
won fairly handily. Saori had no weapons which really put
Kat. on the defensive. Once in a while Saori would try to
hit a groundstroke extra hard which often resulted in an
error.

The last match I watched on this court was Yuliana Fedak
(105) versus Silvija Talaja (158). As they warmed up I said
to the fellow next to me that I thought Fedak would win.
Silvija promptly went out to a 4-0 lead, making me look like
a fool. BUT - Yuliana came back to win the set 6-4. I can't
say what happened to cause that kind of turnaround. Yul's
ground strokes always looked more forcing, but she just
wasn't winning the points in the beginning. Pretty much the
same thing happened in the second set! Silvija went out to
a 3-0 lead and ended up losing the set. Perhaps Silvija
tightened up towards the end of the sets, but if so, it was
a subtle thing. I couldn't see it happening. Yuliana used
a shot several times in this match that I haven't seen
before. Sil. would put up a lob or moonball, which Yul.
handled with a swinging half-volley from about 3 feet
inside the baseline. She's pretty confident with that shot
and always ended up hitting an aggressive stroke with it.

Only saw the beginning of Angela Haynes versus Maria
Fernanda Alves from Brazil. They are both lefties with
two-handed backhands. Maria has a slighter build. Angela
could overpower her at times. But Angela also hits some
very loose shots once in a while. Had no idea who would
win when I left, but Angela ended up winning easily. Good
luck to her in the main draw.

They played two doubles matches this afternoon, one of
which I watched - Matevzic/Talaja def. McShea/Spears.
Talaja is the only of these girls I had seen play before.
It was a close match that could have gone either way. If I
could choose one of those ladies to be my doubles partner,
it would be Lisa McShea. I think she had the best feel
for doubles. She was always quite anxious to come to net
and knew how to create opportunities to get there. Maja
Matevzic, who looks like she's 17, seemed a little awk-
ward out there, but ended up making alot of heads up
plays.

Over ....

What was Maja's injury? She looked pretty fresh out there to me, i.e. I didn't see any sign of an injury.

I'm not sure what injury it was, actually I can't remember :o but she was out a long time and I think there were doubts if she could return to professional tennis.

Or I could totally be wrong :tape:, my memory isn't good but she did have an injury for sure.
