For CROATIA will play:
Apr 16th, 2002, 01:09 PM
I read an article about that today in the newspapers. Our captain Goran Prpic (for those who don't know him, he won Hopman Cup with Monica) did not want to call Iva because she refused to play for our team two times last year (against Italy and against Argentina). This time tables have turned. Iva wants to play and our captain doesn't want her. I agree with hime but I'm afraide that Croatia will lose this one with or without Iva.

Good Luck to croatia:D

I just read it. According to the croatian paper Prpic talked about this with president of Croatian Tennis Association - Slaven Letica. But Letica doesn't want to involve in this. He said Prpic didn' get respond from Iva. But Iva told him she was trying to get in touch with Prpic, but she was unsuccesful. So probably "the communication problem".
Well Prpic was working with Iva when she won RG in 1997, but then their relationship hasn't been very good.
I don't understand, he knows they would have a bigger chance to beat Czechs with Iva. And she will be probably in Bol, because she's commited to play tournament here week after the FED cup.

I just read an article about Croatian Fed Cup team and Iva Majoli. I will give it here in Croatian and if you want I can translate it to English.
Umjesto tog sastava, u skladu s mojom odlukom, glavna tajnica Suzana Knežević ITF-u je prijavila sastav: Iva Majoli, Silvija Talaja, Jelena Kostanić i Karolina Šprem.

it would be great if you could translate the article Johny. Go Croatia!! Congrats to Iva, would love to see her defeat Jen in final!
Apr 20th, 2002, 06:33 PM
I will translate just most importanat parts and I'm in the hurry so excuse my mistakes.
President of Croatian tennis federation Slaven Letica included Iva Majoli in the fed cup team without the knowledge of team captain Goran Prpic. ... On Thursday Letica made an explanation: "On Wednesday, 17th of April 2002. at 16 hrs just before deadline I decided not to send (changed) team which was presented by the captain Goran Prpic: Silvija Talaja, Jelena Kostanic, Karolina Sprem and Ana Vrljic (who was called at the last moment due to Mateja Mezak's injury). Instead of that I sent following team: Iva Majoli, Silvija Talaja, Jelena Kostanic and Karolina Sprem.
It is all about thet decision of Goran Prpic not to include our top ranked player Iva Majoli and not only for this match but for ever. I think that it is not captain's decision but some kind of disciplinarry decision and he has no authority to make that kind of decision.
That is it! I think you got the picture. Captain said that he will not accept Iva in the team. So we will see what happens.
Apr 21st, 2002, 04:34 AM
Thanks for the translation, Johny. I sure hope Iva gets to play! I wonder how long Mezak has been injured because she has not played a tournament in a long while. Do you know what her injury is?

I like Kostanic alot. I'll have to cheer for Croatia too.
A couple of years ago they sent another youngster
to FED CUP in their match against ITALY and I can't
remember her name. That kid could play..what was
Apr 22nd, 2002, 12:45 AM
I have to say, I'm behind Iva 100%. Tennis is primarily a individual sport. If she decided playing for Croatian team did not fit into her schedual, and/or could lessen her chances in the tour, it was her decision, and it wasn't personal. Prpic obviously took it personal. He shouldn't have.
But anyway, she's playing, so good luck us!! :bounce:
Apr 22nd, 2002, 05:41 AM
Greenout, I think you are probably referring to Matea Mezak who played against Casoni in singles and with Karolina Sprem in doubles. I have never seen her play but she has had some great results in ITF singles and doubles jr. events.
Apr 22nd, 2002, 08:41 AM
Matea in that tie against Italy. It was indoor and
the quality was pretty high considering that everyone
except Kostanic were kind of greenhorns to Fed Cup.
That's the first time I seen Serra Zanetti play and she
was on fire too.
Back to Matea. I bet it was her, she was about 17 years
old and they kept her bench on the first day's rounds.
What surprised me was that most people assume that
these newbies can't play because they're still stuck in
TIER IV's or not ranked high enough to be in a slam;but
that's not true.
I enjoyed Croatia vs Italy and Germany vs Argentina
a whole lot.

It looks like Iva is playing after all :) You all may be aware of this, but I thought I'd post it just in case.
From her Charleston final interview...
"Q. You've had an up and down comeback since the shoulder surgery. Does this kind of give you some kind of feeling like it was all worth it?
IVA MAJOLI: Yeah. I mean, of course, it's all worth it, and like I said yesterday, it's only been like one or two months that I really were able to work hard after all these injuries, so I guess it's really paying off, and I'm going to continue. It's a tough schedule. I already have to be with the Fed Cup team leaving Tuesday morning and playing for Croatia against Czech in the weekend and then I'm playing Rome that next week, but most of the girls are doing that. We all have it the same at the end. So it's very tough for all of us, but I'm just going to keep working, get even in better shape. I think this week was so hot. I don't remember it being this hot here. So it made it very, very difficult."
