Strictly speaking its the 1st tournament of the USO Hardcourt season  :D
But I dont think Maria's strength and serve would have developed much since Wimbledon but it surely has since this time last year :)

I wonder what the reason is ?? maybe Maria wanted some more rest or something ?? I hope it's not an injury or anything

Dan23
Jul 27th, 2005, 10:30 AM
Maybe it was to lighten her load before the USO....but I didnt think 2 tournaments in a row before a week off leading into Toronto was too hectic...anyhow enough speculation from me...we'll find out soon enough

Maria Croft
Jul 27th, 2005, 11:25 AM
well I think that Maria just wants some extra rest so that she can give everything she got and doesn't have to hold anything back, at least that's what I hope so, It would be terrible if she was injured, and if so she should take all the time she needs to get better

Dan23
Jul 27th, 2005, 12:01 PM
Yea I think itll be to lighten the load going into the USO....would like to know for sure though

Andy Mac

first of the season ?! I think you missed something there ;)

He basically meant the First Sony Ericsson-WTA Tournament of the US Open Series Season that she at least committed to.

Dan23
Jul 27th, 2005, 11:54 PM
Maria has cited ongoing problems with her waist (I assume lower back) as the reason....though she says shes lightening the load before the upcoming USO, Kremlin Cup and YEC :)

Andy.
Jul 28th, 2005, 07:36 AM
Well i just hope it is a precausionary thing and that she is not injured. this is a great opportunity for her in the coming months it would be horible if she ncouldnt play to her potential.

It just seems a bit odd that the official site of the Accura Classic, or other sites havent come out yet with an official statement.
Anywho, hopefully Maria gets some decent rest, and can prepare for the US Open untroubled.

Yeah the site where I get all my Maria info from hasn't been updated in days so it says nothing of this! Surely somewhere would have some kind of news on it, if it is true!

It's odd that the announcement is only on a Russian fan site.

But then they could be keeping the news quiet in America so as not to harm ticket sales.

Personally I think three tournaments in a row in the heat was always too much for Maria, so she was likely to drop one. Hopeful that's the reason if the story is true, and the reported back pain is not serious.

Russian-born tennis star Maria Sharapova will not take part in the Acura Classic championship at San Diego.

Sharapova is suffering from back pain, Russias Sport-Express newspaper wrote on Thursday. However, a medical checkup did not reveal any serious injuries.

Sharapova quoted by the paper said she is preparing for the US Open. She considers that tournament as well as the Kremlin Cup in Moscow in October and the WTA championship in Los Angeles in November crucial for her. I cannot prepare for each tournament as for the most important ones. It is important to me to perform well at the US Open and in Moscow at my first match in the motherland, she said.

Sharapovas next competitive match will be in Los Angeles on Aug. 8

She gave the scoop to the Russian Sport Express in an interview with Aleksey Tolkachev. Get well Masha!!!

Ouch, I know how painful back pain can be and i don't play tennis let alone at Masha's level. She does always "fiddle" with her lower back so i guess in the back of our minds we knew something was gonna happen with it! Don't over work or over rest ur back Masha, good luck!
