Back pain

Hi everyone

I played a tennis match today (the best one of my life) it was a very tough match and I lost it 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 10-12 I was down the entire third set and had to serve to stay in the match a lot of times, only one break point for me in the opening game that I missed, it was my only one in the third set, lost on his second match point (I was so disappointed) but anyway, I used Mariaís serve motion to play, and it worked really well, I was only broken 3 times (once in the first, once in the second when I was up 3-0, and at 10-11 in the final set) but at the beginning of the third set my lower back began to hurt just like Maria has often said, now I was wondering, does that happen to all the tennis players when they play a long match or is it because of her serve motion ?? and should she change it so her back wonít hurt anymore, that would suck because I love her serve motion, and itís really good, it even did wonders for me lol

What do you think ??

Hi Summon ;)
Nice effort in your match
Hmm I hadnt really thought about it before but I wouldnt have thought Maria's serve action would cause much trouble for her back. She stays quite straight during the motion and only bends in the follow through. I think her lower back trouble would come more from bending down to low balls and stretching on wide balls but of course if you have a sore back any serve action will make you feel it :)

John McEnroe said he likes Maria's service motion. Maybe you should do some stretching before you start.

BTW I also find Maria's action good to duplicate ;)
Nice n simple and you can get up high which makes it easier

But it's just that Maria also said that her back hurts there after a while, so that's why I noticed it, I love her serve motion and it's very powerful, but I'm worried that it might cause injuries in the future

Lindsay's back hurts now also. These are world class athletes, near the top of their sport.
They push themselves hard.
Maria won't change her motion unless she has to. Her serve is a weapon.

I think it comes from match play. I think that all servers experience back pains just from serving too much. You probably had to serve an awful lot and I do think that Maria's motion does cause some back pain because of the way the back bends when tossing the ball up and bending the knee. Just be sure to do adequate stretching before the match and even during the match.

yeah I do, I think your right, it was a very long match, and it was all about holding serve, but in the end I was just to tired to hold again, I wasted 0-30 2 times in that final set, so it's not like I didn't have changes, and I never did try that Maria serve motion in a real match before, but it was just a bit weird that I got some pain in the same spot that Maria mentioned a couple of times

It's always great to have a match like this where you play so much above your normal level. :) well done :D

As for the service motion, as you know, it's very personal to a player, and it's obviously been perfected throughout Maria's training as a player. I would think it is very unlikely this has been overlooked as a cause of the back strain, and would suspect the reason for your back strain was partly due to the very long match, but using a service motion you are not used to can also not help. It could just be possible Maria's service motion is not suitable for you. As I heard someone wisely say, tennis is not a science, it is an art. Everyone must develop and perfect their own style in order to maximise their performance.

thank you :D

I guess you could be right, her serve motion took years of training to get to were it is now, I can't expect to do the same in one match :D but it worked and I'm happy about that, now if only I would have won that match :p
