Martina And McEnroe May Mix It Up In Mamaroneck
Martina Hingis By Tennis Week

Art lovers will never see Picasso and Dali collaborate on a comic book, but tennis fans can watch two of tennis' most creative artists paint shared strokes through their own blue period tomorrow night.

In a dream doubles pairing of former top-ranked Grand Slam champions, John McEnroe is expected to play mixed doubles with Martina Hingis when the undefeated New York Sportimes host Mark Philippoussis and the Hartford FoxForce at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday on the blue court of Mamaroneck's Harbor Island Park. For ticket information, please visit the Sportimes (http://www.wtt.com/team_page.asp?team_id=8&season=2005) web site.

In an intriguing partnership featuring two of tennis' top touch artists, McEnroe and Hingis, a woman whose court sense, flair for finesse and creative use of angles has evoked comparisons to McEnroe, may well share the court as the Sportimes mixed doubles team.

"I like John McEnroe, I think he is a great commentator. He speaks his mind and he says what he believes is right," Hingis told Tennis Week in a past Tennis Week Interview (http://www.sportsmediainc.com/tennisweek/index.cfm?func=showarticle&newsid=10094). "Even after his playing career is over he has contributed so much to tennis as a commentator and a champion who gets people interested in tennis. So I would love to be able to do that too."

Hingis has retained her passion for the game in her impressive WTT debut. Hingis tops the league player standings in doubles with teammates Jenny Hopkins (.781 win percentage) and also in mixed doubles with Mark Merklein (.658 winning percentage). Hingis is near the top in women’s singles with a 23-7 game record and a .767 win percentage.

"My goal was to play more and this was a great opportunity to play some more matches and to play for a great team in New York," Hingis said.

Hingis’ final match of the season will be at the Westside Tennis Club in Houston on Saturday, July 16th as she leads her undefeated New York Sportimes against the 0-6 Wranglers.

Sportimes owner Claude Okin is thrilled to have Hingis for an additional match.

"She is a real team player and is a big part of our success in the record standings," Okin said. "She loves the team and wants to compete for New York and all the Sportimes fans. We are thrilled to have Martina and we are excited to put her out in front of the great fans in New York one more time."

Damn... there'll be some artistry in that team. I pity the pair that has to face them. McEnroe, I reckon, still volleys as well as anyone playing the game today. And Martina... well she isn't half bad either ;)

I wish I could watch WTT
