Let's hear it!

For me, it was Eleni Daniilidou's serve at the Australian Open a few years ago. She was serving to the deuce court and the ball not only went onto the side of ad-court but it was a fault on the far side of the ad-court too!

I can't remember who her opponent was but I think she was just confused. LOL!

What about yours?

I once saw Yoon-Jeong Cho (vs. Seles) hit her serve so badly it hit the court before it hit the net. :tape: I'm not even sure how she did that/won a set.

Hingis' infamous smash against Venus certainly ranks as one of the worst smashes she ever hit, so that's definitely the worst shot I've seen at a crucial time by a top player. Some of Serena's drop shots that don't come close to reaching the net, or loop up to the back of the court, have been entertaining.

When Davenport blew that smash @ Wimbledon against Amelie & just shrieked in embarrassment I was pretty shocked...

I agree that the Hingis smash vs. Venus was the worst shot in a critical moment....

I have seen worse but I can't think of any @ the moment.

Seeing Nancy Loeffler-Caro hit a backhand against Svetlana Krivencheva in the first round of qualifying at Toronto 2 years ago. She barely hit the frame and it was the first shot I saw.

A funny side note: Play started at 11am, I arrived at 11:15, I was so worried I would miss the match. And my gut was right, Nancy was already down 6-0 1-0! :o

You know, even as I was waiting for this thread to load up, I was thinking of a Daniilidou serve-- except this one was at Wimbledon 2002 (vs. Mary Pierce), when the ball went into the stands at a 45-degree angle.

Mary Joe Fernandez had some pretty horrific mis-hits attempting smashes, too; if it was an important point, you knew she'd either punch it into the net or hit it two feet long. I saw enough of those that I couldn't choose which was the worst.

Silvia Farina's 'flying serve' in Filderstadt 2000. Her serve hit the wall above the head of the other player, never bouncing, it just flew from her racquet, across the net, to the wall on the back of the court behind the other player.

Virginie Razzano at Wimbledon 2004. She was playing Rita Grande, and they were both knackered, you could tell by the way they were moving in the 3rd set. So Virginie attacks, gets a high ball from Rita, slow-walks to the middle of the court, looks up, prepares to smash, and smashes the ball to her feet! it bounced not one foot from where she was standing.

I've seen quite a few people hit ping-pong serves, Arantxa at YEC99 for instance. They are not that unusual.

Justine against Testud at the French Open 2004 hit such a horrible serve. (but she was ill).
Her motion was so horrible, the serve was so slow, and the ball hit the net-judge's head.
I didn't know if I should laugh or cry for Justine.
After I saw that point, I knew she wouldn't go far at that FO.

Another bad shot I've witnessed occured in the semi-final match between Chanda Rubin and Jelena Dokic in the L.A Open 2002. Jelena had set up a point really well and was coming to the net to play what would be a winning drive volley but she hit the ball almost out of the stadium :o

Speaking of smashes, I was playing doubles the other night, hit this backhand down the line, came in for the easiest smash in tennis history, i completely missed it with my raquet, and the ball hit me on the head :o I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

Player wise, that Anna K homer serve sounds funny, as does the Conchi moonball in the slam. What Davenport said about her ping pong serve was good.

God, that smash was horrendous lolol

I remember some of her worst points :p

FO 99, against Monica Seles, she would made her run from side to side of the court, and then she had the full court to hit her forehand, since Seles had just stopped thinking she had already lost the point, and Conchita hit it so long and so wide (she didn't even hit the doubles court) that made the people in the stands yell a very funny "ooooooh"

Wimbledon 95, against Arantxa. Arantxa hit a lob that just passed the net and bounced in front of it, Conchita was already there, and it was just a matter of touching the ball to send it to ASV's court (ASV had already stopped), and Conchita hit it into the net :o

vento kabchi vs chanda

not sure if it was the uso or wimbledon. anyway, it was a first round match. kabchi hits a shot that hits the net but goes in, chanda hits it back, it hits the net and goes in, kabchi hits it again, it hits the net and falls on the line. chanda thinks she's won it then realizes that there's no call, she has the entire court open and hits a ghastly forehand mishit waaaay out.

it was something like that. horrendous.

I'm a big fan of Eleni's but THAT serve has to go - bless her

So this shot comes close to the worse shot in my opinion, however for the crucial factor it has to be Martina Hingis's over head shot on match point against Venus......Martina is also one of my faves but can someone please post those screen shots of that point again ;) Even I find it amusing - bless her

Also the one against Hingis, Steffi could'nt hope for an easiest smash after a long difficult point at a crucial stage of the match, and she just netted it awfully!Gabriela Sabatini mishit her serve twice during a QF match against Gigi Fernández at US Open '94, neither of them reached the net and were at around 35 mph!

I'm sure this has been debated plenty around here already... ;)

... but I don't think it was THAT bad a shot. Don't get me wrong --- she could have (and should have) done a lot more with it, but she did hit it deep, and Venus still had to hit a solid shot to get it by Martina. Venus had made a lot of unforced errors in the previous game or two, so I can see why Hingis played it too safe.

Anyway, what a classic match.

Monica Seles against Irina Spirlea in '98. It was the semis of AI or Hilton Head, one of the green clay tournaments. But Monica's drop shot attempts were ATTROCIOUS that match. They were seriously 8-10 feet high and landing right on the service line. They looked like short lobs and she did about five or six those in a row before just stopping the drop shots altogether.

Pam's second serve down match point against Huber at Wimbledon '96. It didn't even make it to her own service box lol.

That same year, british wild card Rachel Viollet played Martina Hingis. On Hingis's first match point, Rachel pushed her well out wide for a backhand and Martina falls right on her ass hitting the shot. Martina is just literally sitting on her ass on the court, racket out of her hand...and Rachel pushes a backhand from the service line right into the bottom of the net.
