grueling-Physically or mentally demanding to the point of exhaustion

Through out the history of tennis there has been many great matches but few would be called "grueling." I have many that I believe that were "grueling" but I'd rather hear from you...

What has been the most grueling matches you have ever witnessed, watched, etc...

USO SF Justine vs. Jennifer was pretty tough or they made it look like it was...

Justine was cramping & struggling & Jennifer couldn't put her away. But I'm sure the French Open has had some, none come to mind @ the moment though.

Wow. It is so interesting to me that, other than Gunther and his lady:rolleyes: , everyone's list of matches dates no earlier than 2001.

Hingis vs Capriati Aus Open 02. Pretty much down to the heat, both players having to be extensively iced down after the 2nd set. Stories of Hingis' body covered in goose bumps, crying on Capriati's shoulder cos she couldn't carry on. I'm surprised this match wasn't mentioned before actually.
We can all verify how heat can make us feel lethargic imagine playing the rallies these two were playing, definitley has mental affects aswell.

RG final '96. I kept thinking Arantxa was going to colapse at some point. The effort she put there was amazing. Just makes the eventual outcome even more sad. :(

US Open 1999 SF M Hingis(1) - V Williams(3) 6-1 4-6 6-3

Venus was utterly exhausted at the end of this match.

Hingis went on to lose to a fresh Serena in the Final.

Saw on TV: Sabatini vs. Seles-a five setter for the WTA championships in 1990. It was fairly close up to the end and was well over 3 hours. The New York crowd almost willed Gaby through but Monica was tough as nails and pulled it out.

The MOST grueling match in women's tennis history would have to be the 6 hour 31 minutes (and only two sets!) match between Hepner and Nelson-Dunbar at Richmond in 1984. One POINT took 29 minutes!

It was moonball city baby.

Nelson-Dunbar d. Hepner 6-4 7-6 (11-9)

It's the second longest match by time in tennis history-the Clement/Santoro match at the 2004 French went 6 hours 33 minutes.

The funny thing is Nelson-Dunbar survived two set points in the tiebreak. Imagine how long a 3 setter might have been......

well, i really hated the semifinal match between ana and justine this year(in warsaw it was i think). They both just couldn't get a ball in, they were missing all easy shots. it was damn silly

Also in 2004 Capriati vs Dementieva, the two had many resistances to win a set, that one advantaged a point, had 40-40 more ten times, in the end could gain Dementieva, but the two were tired.
And other very long match of Guillermo Coria this year in AO also was grueling.

1999 US Open Semis- Hingis vs. V.Williams, this win just took so much out of Hingis that was flat in the finals.

2000 Chase Championships Finals- Hingis vs. Seles, a classic match for the final match in MSG and both players were just huffing and puffing near the end of that 3rd set!

2001 Australian Open Quarters- Hingis vs. S.Williams, this is possibly the match that Hingis hit the hardest EVER in her career and boy oh boy did it get to her two matches later.

2001 Miami Finals- Capriati vs. V.Williams- 9 match points saved by Venus and the 3rd set was very entertaining.

ANY OF THE CAPRIATI vs. S.WILLIAMS ENCOUNTERS IN 2001 were VERY grueling, almost like a boxing match!

**********but the one that tops them all************

2003 US Open Semis- J.Henin-Hardenne vs. J.Capriati. Classic 3-set GRUELING match and both ladies were showing some great shot making under pressure in this match. Once there is cramping you know you got a grueling match going on.

Serena had just a tough as a match as Hingis did that went to 6-4 in the 3rd against Davenport...Don't use the excuse that hingis ONLY lost because she was still exhausted from her previous match as it can be applied to both of them as Serena had a long, tough match as well...:wavey:

well in that Davenport Serena Semis, the rallies were shorter and they hit more winners....in the Hingis Venus match, these ladies didn't want to hold serve and won their points through sheer rallying and desire to win every point!

yes, serena overcame a hugely difficult draw, and still is her most impressive slam, imo.

yes, her match with Clijsters went to 7-5 in the 3rd...She also had a tough 3 setter against Conchita Martinez as well...

At USOPEN 1999 SERENA had 4 consecutive 3 setters against Kim Clijsters, Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles, Lindsay before she made it to the finals. I think hingis only lost 1 set to Venus in the semi.

The 1997 RG semifinal between Hingis and Seles. I think the score was 6-7 7-5 6-4 for Hingis, such a demanding match.

That one two!! Both were mentally and physical exhausted!!

Honestly, I was rather impressed w/ how Maria stuck around in this match...I thought that she would eventually wilt away in this match because I think Serena is a little more used to the conditions...But both were DRAINED towards the end of this match...The grunting stopped...
