Which players do you think would lose on purpose if someone payed them? I think Capriati would. I think Myskina would to.

Most of the girls playing 10k's would lose for that kind of money.
I don't think Jennifer or Anastasia would risk their reputation for that kind of money.
They're millionaires.

How much money has Myskina made this year from tournaments? $395,164. She would make more money from a loss than all her tournaments combined this year.

Myskina makes much more than just her prizemoney (which was $2 million last year).
She gets paid by Nike and Head, plus other endorsements http://ads.tennisuniverse.com/wtaworld/customavatars/avatar27959_58.gif (http://wtaworld.com/member.php?u=27959) :drink:
She gets paid for Fed Cup, Hopman Cup.
For playing Dubai, Doha, Stockholm.
Anastasia has money.

I don't care what you say, half a million is a lot of money just to lose.

goldenlox
Jul 13th, 2005, 05:39 PM
But who's going to pay her? How does she know it won't become a public scandal?
She doesn't need the money. She's going to earn millions more as a tennis player.

Why would Myskina and Capriati be top suspects? Any particular reason?

Are you high????? Neither Jen nor Nastya would take $ to throw a match! Jen, in particular, has too much pride and too strong of a competitive drive to win......

she has too much pride even though she stole from stores and did drugs.

Well Marta Marrero or Weingartner could lose 0-6, 0-6 and you still wouldn't know if they tanked the match or not

However, while you're trashing people's reputations and saying you believe they're criminals, would you mind telling us WHY those two. Myskina, right now, is the most revered Russian women in the history of the sport in her home country. NOt only being their first GS winner ever, but bringing home the Federation Cup too. She's one of the last players who'd take a bribe to tank a match. The position she's currently in can't be bought.

The onlyplayer I think would truly lose a match to make money is Kournikova, because that's just about what she did a couple times in 2002 and 2003. Showed up, took the check and tanked.

Indian Wells, Miami and Amelia Island in '02. Three straight first round, straight set losses to players outside the top fifty. If she was injured, why was she playing, except to take the appearance fees.

Anna wasn't paid to lose.
Besides Lindsay, everyone who took a big appearance fee in Dubai lost early.
But they weren't paid to lose.

There was, however, accusations towards some ATP players (notably, Kafelnikov) that they had tanked matches to make $$$ on betting...

But they weren't paid to lose. The question wasn't asking for an example. It was asking who we think would do it.

Taking a bribe to lose is a) illegal, in most places. b) Contrary to just about everything honorable in sport. So it's a pretty major insult to name anybody.

But showing up and tanking is 'Contrary to just about everything honorable in sport', as well. Someone who'll tank is taking money and not bothering to try to win. It's a pretty short step to taking money and making sure you lose.

Myskina's words and actions strongly suggest that money isn't that important to her. She makes scheduling and other career choices that make it obvious that competing and representing her country are more important than rankings and prize money. Myskina seems like one of the last people who would throw a match for money. She has more money than she needs already. She seems to place a premium on things like honor, pride, family and country.

At this point in Captiati's career, it's insane to think she'd throw a match for money. Think of what she would lose personally: self-respect, eligibility to compete, standing with other players, respect of fans. For what? More money, a commodity she already has in ample supply?

I'll tell you what player would throw a match for money: a really stupid one without any foresight, morals or respect for the game. I don't think there are many like that. I hope not.

AMEN!! Any player would have to be a total fool to put easy money ahead of earning millions in the future. Besides, you would have to already be a pretty good player who is winning matches for anyone to even bother coming to you to have you tank a match for money. So, no well known player would even be in the mix.

at wimbledon myskina was asked to say somthing about the fact, that men's price money is higher than women's.
she answered that this was not interesting and that she doesn't care because if she would be working for mcdonalds she would have much less money.
I think she is very bodenständig=native=racy of the soil ??
what's the right word?

No, this does happen. It's the only way to explain the current plight of British tennis. Those girls are multi-millionaires!

Down to earth;)

Well...if it´s a Tier IV, I would definetly play like crap, sack in the appearance fee, smile a few times saying how much I love this tourney and leave the country

I can definitely imagine the situation, that is, the player's interview after the "loss": "I had never been to _________ (some random country) before, so I really loved being here, it's such a great experience, the people are so nice, the city is so beautiful (even though I haven't really seen any of it as I came here two hours before the start of the match and I'm leaving in 30 minutes), the tournament is so well organized, it's just fantastic. Unfortunately I wasn't on top of my game today and ___________ (random player ranked outside of top 100) played a great match, she was really good and deserved to win. But in general, it was great - I earned... pardon, I learned many new things, and I'm looking forward to coming back next year *cough*"

OK, so WTA players may not take cash to lose a match, but in Dubai there are other ways for pretty athletic tennis girls to make money than simply winning matches.

And I can certainly think of a few players who would do that. :hehehe:

Only Lindsay is as consistent. That's why they're ranked 1 & 2.
