By 'SHINE', I mean win a Tier II or higher tournament while whompin' at least two top ten players. Here's the US summer hardcourt finalists for the past three years.
2004
Stanford....... Davenport........def. V Williams....... 7-6 5-7 7-6
Los Angeles.... Davenport........def. S Williams....... 6-1 6-3
San Diego...... Davenport........def. Myskina.......... 6-1 6-1
Montreal....... Mauresmo.........def. Likhovtseva...... 6-1 6-0
The Olympics... Henin-Hardenne...def. Mauresmo......... 6-3 6-3
New Haven...... Bovina...........def. Dechy............ 6-2 2-6 7-5
US Open........ Kuznetsova.......def. Dementieva....... 6-3 7-5

2003
Stanford....... Clijsters........def. Capriati.......... 4-6 6-4 6-2
San Diego...... Henin-Hardenne...def. Clijsters......... 3-6 6-2 6-3
Los Angeles.... Clijsters........def. Davenport......... 6-1 3-6 6-1
Toronto........ Henin-Hardenne...def. Krasnoroutskaya... 6-1 6-0
New Haven...... Capriati.........def. Davenport......... 6-2 4-0 ret
US Open........ Henin-Hardenne...def. Clijsters......... 7-5 6-1

2002
Stanford....... V Williams...... def. Clijsters......... 6-3 6-3
San Diego...... V Williams...... def. Dokic............. 6-2 6-2
Los Angeles.... Rubin........... def. Davenport......... 5-7 7-6 6-3
Montreal....... Mauresmo........ def. Capriati.......... 6-4 6-1
New Haven...... V Williams...... def. Davenport......... 7-5 6-0
US Open........ S Williams...... def. V Williams........ 6-4 6-3Basically, I removed from consideration anybody who's name shows up four or five times, or more. By definition, good results from those players this time of year in the US aren't, 'unexpected'.

But the better Russians; Alicia Molik; Mauresmo, if she chooses to play much; an unexpected return by Monica; Mary Pierce...

nobody other than the usual suspects will win the hardcourt tournaments.

Aside from these players, I would say Ana Ivanovic can do some real damage. I predict Pierce will make a good run too. Maria obviously.

Aside from these players, I would say Ana Ivanovic can do some real damage. Are you predicting she will, or just saying you won't be surprised if she does?

Are you predicting she will, or just saying you won't be surprised if she does?

I think she will. On her good day, she can beat at least half of the top ten players.

I think she will. On her good day, she can beat at least half of the top ten players.Well, she actually HAS beaten two of them, so that statement isn't completely outrageous. Besides, you stepped up and made a prediction that had some risk associated with it. That's kinda cool.

Come on Mary :rocker2: I just have this gut feeling that she will have a good showing this year. Allez, if she can control her nerves and stays healthy maybe she will win it

Theres a good chance Maria Kirilenko could do a bit of damage on her favourite surface...shes in a better position than previous years. Earlier this year she got through to the 4th Round at Indian Wells, the Quarters at Doha and the Semis at Hyderabad (albeit Tier IV) beating a couple of top 20 players..
That being said, shes not playing until San Diego..:D

well, i expect ana to deal some damage too. she beated kuznetsova and mauresmo so thats something. But i heared she plays only 1 hardcourt event before the usopen so that gives me a little doubt. But i have the feeling she's at least a top10 player in the making so we'll see if its gonna happen this year or later :)

Sharapova. She isn't defending many points, and I expect her to rebound very well after her loss to Venus. Depending on what she plays, I think she will pick up a title in LA or Toronto.

Kim will shine on hardcourts once again. Wouldn't be surrised if she won the US Open.

I'll take Na Li if she plays but I think Venus, Lindsay, and Kim will clean house.

Beating 2 Top Ten players...? I'd like fancy the chances of Kirilenko or Linetskaya (but her serve is problem).

Realistically though, I'd have to concur with Ivanovic. When it's on, you just have to say "too good". If I had to stake money, she's really the only one outside the normal radar I'd be willing to place it on.

Sania...she'll be inconsistent most of the way through...but she'll have one tournament where she just can't miss...

of course the top top ladies and mary pierce will shine and may win titles.

i see ivanovic making several big runs, she may not win anything, but she will make a few tournaments interesting.

same for amy frazier :worship: she will be a big surprise when she starts winning matches.

Clijsters will probably do very well throughout the hard court season but choke in the second week of the US open. I don't really expect many big surprises.

Serena.

Maria, Lindsay, Venus, Clijsters and Pierce, they are the ones at the moment for me, but that could all change after two weeks

Sania...she'll be inconsistent most of the way through...but she'll have one tournament where she just can't miss...

I agree. She's maddeningly inconsistent at the moment(She plays like a top ten player one day and crap the next :( ),but when she's finding the court she's devastating with those 100MPH groundies of hers.I think she's still a year or two away from being a consistent threat. She needs to sort out that gimme second serve.
I also think that Ivanovic, and pierce will create some major problems.I expect Jelena Jankovic to turn a few heads too.But otherwise its the usual suspects of Kim,Justine,Lindsay,Venus and co whipping everyone.

vaidisova, of course :)
she'll beat at least one top10er in these tournies, but i suspect it will be more about beating top20ers and getting in the top20 herself.
I see petrova winning one as well, because it really is her time.

Oh.I forgot about Nicole! She'll definitely cause some problems!Well, she did once beat a top ten player, so I suppose it's possible. I haven't seen her display much on American-style hardcourts though.

I think Pierce will reach some finals, maybe win a tournament. Kuznetsova will shine too.

I think Sveta will play really well this summer. She's not comfortable on grass.
This is her surface.
Also Nadia, who made the FO semis and Wimby quarters, is going to play really well.

I see Davenport in the finals against either Williams Sister (if they are in the same half) Either Belgium, Sharapova and maybe Mauresmo or Demintieva.

I don't think Ana or Nicole are playing that much, but they will hopefully do really well in the tournaments that they entered. Sesil is in San Diego and it will be very interesting to see if she has anything to back up her FO QF finish. I hope she can do well also.
Like someone else said, Nadia is really overdue to finally win a tournament and I think that she will finally put it all together in one of these tournis.
Lindsay should do well and I expect to see Kim in the latter stages as well. Justine I am not sure about, but she will have at least one good run.
I think Mary will keep improving and do well. I'm hopeful that Patty can also pull off some strong hard court form.
Lastly, Maria should win at least one of these tournaments too.

Patty Schynder will find her hardcourt form! ;)

Methinks you maybe correct - I would think Patty might spring a surprise or two and get noticed.
Ivanovic might be another - Sugiyama too. Hantuchova is another one - if she can recapture the form that got her into the top 5 not long ago then I'm sure she'll stand an extremely good chance. These tournaments are EVER so difficult to predict - you can never tell!

I have a feeling Mary Pierce will make the Finals of Toronto. Hopefully all the Canadian girls can raise their rankings.

Jul 14th, 2005, 01:58 AM
I think Ivanovic might.

Nobody has mentioned Nadia Petrova. I think she can if she learned anything from her first set with Sharpova at Wimbledon, to be able to take her game a step further.

edit: I see xcrtbckhnd has mentioned Nadia (I should've read the second page before posting)

And Myskina's gonna kick ass at the Rogers Cup.

Both Ivanovic, Vaidisova, and Dementieva will make good runs....What exactly do you mean by a 'good run'? I mean, it can't be something 25 other players do.

hmmmm.... I'll say, as a surprise winner, I'll pick Ivanovic as the strongest candidate so far.

Angela Haynes.

Clijsters,Henin and Venus and Serena.

Lindsay if she is healthy.

People who I think are gonna lose a little early are: Maria,Pierce and Elena D. Espeically Elena D for some reason.

Daniela could shine. Oh I think Sveta could possibly win two tourneys and defend her Title. That girl has game.

There is no one more dangerorus than serena when she feels her back is against the wall.
Myskina is slowly finding form and will be looking to salvage her year.
I feel Kim will really pick up in the indoor season a from she will carry right into the YEC.

NO UNEXPECTED WINS EXPECTED.
That said, I hope Jelena Jankovic finally has a big win under her belt. Or Shinobu who seems to always get to the 4th round of a slam then fizzle out.

But my predictions are probably Venus, if not Venus, then serena, if not serena then Lindsay Davenport.

UNEXPECTED EARLY boots?
That's a different story, but Sharapova and JHH certainly spring quickly to mind.

How is Amy going anyway? I haven't heard much of her this year?

I'm hoping Elena and Kim might step up and steal a couple of hard court titles this summer. And I do believe they can surprise some of the more favoured players.

Also, Michaela Krajicek if she is healthy. She won the junior U.S Open last year, so she can play on the hard courts, and she has a lot of potential (and a lot of game obviously)
