Looks like Claudine's terrible year is continuing. Defeated by Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in Vittel, France.

kanepi is a very talented player, has struggled with injuries over the last few years, could certainly be a top 50 player if she was to consistently play well and fulfill her potential. a bad loss for schaul but not the end of her career.

Kaia won a $75,000 challenger in Fano ten days ago, so she's obviously in form.

She should retire or take time off. She's the prime example of a player who acheived a level of success that was probably out of her league. She just isn't a good enough player and when she won that tournament, the expectations on her were enormous. Now, for her to go back to the challenger level is demoralizing. I don't know anything about her mental and emotional state specifically, but she's just not going to feel good about playing at a level that doesn't fit with the level she was at previously.

She just needs to take a break, train, practice, and regroup. It's not going to do any good for her to lose miserably to players at a level that she doesn't think she belongs in.

ETA: Losing to Kanepi is not a horrible thing. But winning only one game shows how little fight she has in her.
