View Full Version : Hingis defeats Dominikovic 5-1

Hingis has won yet another top 100 player! She beat Evie Dominikovic 5-1 in singles and partnered Hopkins to beat Dominikovic and Janet Lee 5-2 in the doubles. Martina didn't play mixed doubles in this tie though.

Another solid win for Martina. I think against most players ranked below the top 20 she can beat them if they play first to 5 games. But in a best of 3 sets match, she cannot yet maintain her fitness (as proven against Marlene).

Good Luck Martina for the rest of the WTT season :bounce:

It's only a matter of time before Volcana says that Hingis is playing the best tennis of her career. :rolls:

If only every official match was played first to 5 games....then martina could come back ;) lol

and Martina/Jennifer are undefeated in doubles!......VERY impressive considering Jennifer is not really that great a doubles player

I kind of disagree about how Marti couldn't play a three set match now. In February, that might have been the case. But she has compiled a great record in WTT, playing in some cases three matches in one night. And she still looks fresh and able. Plus, it looks like her ankles are holding up very well.

I really think that if she put alot of effort into a comeback, she'd be at least in the top 20. The question is if that is good enough for her, and I really don't think it is. Now doubles is another story. After watching some of her matches in WTT, it is clear that in doubles she could easily be contending for slams again. I hope she considers a return to the tour at least in doubles. Because right now it is just a load of talent going to waste.

another decent win for martina, as for the fitness/best of 3, that match against weingartner was awhile ago and martina could have gotten herself into much better shape since then, but we wont know unless she plays a best of 3 match. as for a comeback to the tour, im confused about martina's true situation, i heard that the previous injuries will cause her major problems playing at that high level and day in and day out but also remember back when she first retired she was saying she didnt want to comeback unless she could win the big events and i thought that was one of the main reasons why she didnt make a comeback then. it would be great to see her out there playing again on the tour.

When Martina first left the tour, she said it was because of her feet and that it would take a "medical miracle" for her to come back to tour. After losing to Weingartner in Pattaya, she said "To come back would be too much work and I'm enjoying my life now." Didn't mention the ankles ONCE.

She's a stubborn champion. She'll only come back if she's at the level she used to be at.

people read too much into that weingartner match in assessing her fitness IMO. i doubt she lost match because she was so physically exhausted from winning a set 6-1 and it also should be remember that in the rare moments when weingartner plays well she is actually capable of beating, and has beaten, very good players like capriati at the aus open and petrova and RG in the years after the had big results that those slams.

 Martina continues to amaze.

Who's to say she can't play a 3-setter now? That 3-setter against Marlene was back in February. Half the year's gone by, and who knows what she's been doing to get herself into better shape!

No one in their rigth mind ever doubted that Hingis even with her low confidence and inability to win the majors in the last part of her career wouldn't still be ranked among the best in the world. Her beating top 100 players isn't all that impressive because Hingis was and obviously still is a great player. The whole issue was could she compete with the TOP players, that's why she won't comeback, because she's not ok with being just a member of the top 10 or 20.

1. I could probably beat Evie

2. Evie has a weak mental game. Hearing them announce Hingis as her opponent was enought o beat Evie.

3. The match lasted about 2 mins. If it was a full 3 setter Martina MAY have gotten tired, provided Evie won some games.

Damn... Evie's in the top 100... she's improved a lot :p

But still, impressive stuff from Martina. I'd love for her to come back and do well. Her game was so much fun to watch, heck I could watch her practice. For her to never play on tour again would be a real shame, considering that she's still, the most naturally gifted player I personally have ever seen.

I bet you twenty pence that Navratilova has already been on the phone to Hingis asking just that.

Martina is playing very well. Her and Hopkins have been automatic so far.

For anyone who didn't get to see the Hingis vs. Martina N. match ESPN 2 is replaying that whole Sportimes vs. Lobsters WTT match on Thursday at 12 noon on the Eastern Coast.

thats if she wants to lose in the first round. Martina H. and Anna have a good chance advancing in doubles.

Martina needs a player with some power, Anna and Nav probably wouldn't be the best option RIGHT NOW, since Hingis is weaker physically according to all reports. I think Svetlana would be an awesome choice, good dubs player with enough power to balance out Hingis' doubles genius. Then again, with doubles these days....maybe Anna would be enough.
