View Full Version : How Did Zi Yan Get Into Modena Main Draw

Jul 11th, 2005, 07:33 PM
On the drawsheet, it says last directly accepted player was Marta Marrero with rank of 110. Also there are players in qualies ranked in the 100s. Zi Yan is ranked 229 and as far as I know, this is around where she was ranked when the commitment list was made. Also I don't think she received WC.

Hm...dunno...was she injured or something?

I believe she took the Feed-Up as finalist in $50K Beijing (winner Ting Li didn't come to Modena)

I was wondering that also.

This is probably a very stupid question, but what is feed-up?

The ITF and WTA co-operate in a way. For winning certain ITF events, players are awarded a spot in a WTA tournament. This spot is called a feed-up. For instance, Aravane Rezai played 's-Hertogenbosch/Rosmalen this year, because she was the winner of Saint Gaudens. Normally she would never have been able to get in with her ranking. Also, Lucie Safarova won Prostejov and also got a feed-up in Rosmalen.

Obviously this gives these players a great chance to present themselves to the public, to get some great ranking points and for the audience it's a way to see the future stars before they make it big.

Feed-Up's are a bit like WC's (but there's no limit on how many you can get-obviously if you keep doing well in ITF's you wont need them ;) )
THE winner of a ITF 50k/75K event get feed-ups into certain WTA events (lower level)-
if the winner doesnt need the feed-up or doesnt want to take it, then that option goes to the finalist.

There are also some feed-ups for some 25k events ( but they get them for qualifying draws)
