PYW News

The database files are all Excel files. They will self evidently only be visible to you if you have Excel installed on your computer.

What PYW is:

First of all, a note on what Pick-Your-Winner [PYW] is. This is the largest popularity contest held on WTAworld. Every week, we hold the same events as the WTA Tour (and, as of two weeks ago, also every ITF event higher than $50K). We use the original tournament draws and people can then vote for who they want to win the matches. The first player to win two sets in a match wins the match, with the tennis scoring system also pertaining to PYW. Every vote counts as one game, so the first person to cast a vote, determines the first game.

The winners of the matches move on to the next round, where people can vote once more. In the end, there will be one player standing, winning the tournament.

Every WTAworld member can vote in PYW. You don't have to commit, you don't need a minimum number of posts or whatever - just vote! PYW Threads can be found in the tournament forums.

After a lot of hard work and dedication, the PYW database has finally been completed. The database provides you with interesting statistics, great overviews and more. The database consists of three Excel files. I will explain in short what the files contain:

This file obviously contains head-to-heads. The large group of players is split into several groups, based on their surname (AB, CD, EF, GH, IJK, LM, NO, PQR, S, TU, VW and XYZ). Every group contains a table, with the names of the players on the top columns and the opponents in the left column. Head-to-heads in red mean a positive score for the player v. the opponent; h2hs in red stand for a negative score. If a score is in black, it means there is a tie (e.g. 1-1). If a cell is blank, there were no previous encounters between the two players.

Rankings & Overview of Results Per Player:

By far the largest and most important file, for it contains detailed rankings. You can see the amount of points a player scored every week. You can also see who won tournaments that week, because the points have a yellow background (WTA level tournament victories) or orange background (ITF tournament victories). You can also see the progress of a player, because a formula is installed to calculate how many spots a player's ranking dropped or increased compared to the previous week.

The large group of over 350 different players has been split again for the overview of results per player. The same groups as in the head-to-heads (AB, CD and so on) all have a tag of their own. The results of the players are there, with the players ordered alphabetically. Not only can you see the results, you can also see if a player was seeded, got a wild card, qualified or was a lucky loser; you can read how many points she scored that week and you can check the win/loss record.

Tournament History:

The tournament history includes the draws of every tournament played in the history of PYW. It also includes information on the ranking points to be earned in that event. Furthermore, there is a tag with a Hall of Fame, giving you an overview of all the tournament champions, runners-up and the final score.

Just have a look at the database and discover many interesting facts, keep track of your favourite players' results and see the database continuously being edited.

Also, if you have any questions, just ask me or Geoffry.

And I would like to hear from you if you have any suggestions on how to improve the database.

Actually, I didn't really use the mathematical advantages Excel offers here. Only for the rankings, where I use the Sum formula, so that's all very basic and anyone could do that (and I use the sort option). I do know a bit more about Excel, because I took a course in it (but I forgot most of it I bet, though it's easy to revive my memory with some exercises). It's pretty easy!
